For Barbara

This is a page from my Sea Burial diary. It is for Barbara because she is struggling with the death of her friend. I guess this won't really help but I thought I would do it anyway.

This is some of the research from my thesis:

‘….submersion under the sea in the heroic view is a “night sea journey” through a mother-monster, out of which one emerges having gained an insight, an integration, or a virtue. The immersion is to be endured for the sake of later advantage on the path of linear development……But Dionysus has a “home” in the sea. The libido descends for refuge when driven by the excessive demands of Lycurgus, the blind tyranny of the ruling will….Depression into these depths is experienced not as defeat (since Dionysus is not a hero), but as downwardness, darkening, and becoming water. …..When the ego forgets this and takes the vanishing personally, it makes depression…. To believe we make these movements, can control them or are to blame for inflation or depression is hybris’. (Hillman, Myth of Analysis, 1972: 285)
