Fans of the hit show watched in surprise as The Only Way Is Essex smoothie Mark, 24, proposed to childhood sweetheart Lauren Goodger earlier this month.
Given his track record, his sudden devotion did seem rather odd.
'Mark said that they may have got engaged but there's no way he will actually walk down the aisle with her,' claims a friend.
'He's still young and isn't ready to settle down. Everything is just for the cameras.
'Their engagement gets everyone talking, raises their profile and earns them some extra cash.
'So everyone's a winner.'
But Lauren - who removed her tattoo of Mark's name just hours before his shock proposal - insists their love is genuine.
'Me n mark have 9 and half yrs history and we can't have been acting lol!'�Lauren, 24, Tweeted this morning.
'We are engaged n very happy thank u x.'
