Long Beach City Council to vote on plastic bag ban today

LONG BEACH - The Long Beach City Council is slated to vote tonight on whether to phase out plastic bags at grocery stores, effective Aug. 1.

The council gave preliminary approval to the idea in a 6-2 vote in December and had attorneys for the city write the law.

Big chains such as Ralphs would have to start charging 10 cents per paper bag for shoppers who don't bring reusuable bags. Smaller stores would have until Jan. 15.

The trend that started in Northern California has now nearly swept the state. Last year, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors passed a similar ban that takes effect in July.
