March Madness Memories: Kenton Paulino downs West Virginia

With March upon us, we here at Outside the Boxscore have decided to look back at some of our favorite NCAA March Madness memories.

This one comes from the 2006 NCAA tournament in the sweet sixteen as Texas took on West Virginia.

West Virginia forward Kevin Pittsnogle ties the game at 71; only to have Kenton Paulino hit a shot as time expires to give Texas the victory by the score of 74-71.

Today's Moment of Zen: Karl Malone on Aliens

A long time ago back in the year of 1999 before the Millenium; the Man Show on Comedy Central was one of the few shows dedicated to men.

It starred Jimmy Kimmel (before his ABC talk show) and Adam Carolla where they joked about juggies, porn stars, dumb guys, beer, and Utah Jazz forward Karl Malone.

Here is one of my personal favorite sketches where Jimmy Kimmel plays Karl Malone and talks about Aliens.

Nashville Vs. Red Wings

2 goals 29 seconds apart makes it 2-0 5 and a half minutes into the first period. Not a good start for the Red Wings.
Now it's 3-0 not even half way through the first.
5-0 ;now it's really not a good night so far.
Pavel Datsyuk has 500 points in 506 games. Here is his opportunity to do that.
8-0 4 goals on Conklin and 4 on Osgood.

Kings Vs. Red Wings 2-1 Wings Win

Interesting game with Osgood back. Osgood held them at just one goal.

Cassel and Vrabel Traded to Chiefs for Second Rounder, Being a Patriot Apparently No Longer Cool

Yesterday the Denver Broncos signed Jabar Gaffney and Lonnie Paxton away from the Patriots among their 6 signings. Today more Patriots are expected to flee the coop, with Mike Vrabel and Karaoke Legend Matt Cassel both being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs for their 2009 second round pick.

Cassel I certainly saw getting traded, as having $25-30 million locked up in two guys, when only one of them can see the field at a time, is tricky. It still remains to be seen whether Brady will be back at full strength (or at all) but I think it's a good risk. I also think it's a good risk for new Chiefs GM former Pats Vice President of Player Personnel Scott Pioli, as Cassel showed a lot of poise last year in almost leading the Pats to the playoffs. The only real loser here is Tyler Thigpen, who was pretty great late in the year for an awful Chiefs team.

Vrabel, I didn't see coming, but I'm okay with. He's getting older and less effective, but he was still the heart and soul of the Patriots Defense many a time. He's going to bring some great veteran leadership to that Chiefs Defense and hopefully his winning mindset will create postive change for them over there.

In lesser news, the Bills signed former Bengal Ryan Fitzpatrick today. I'm actually a big fan of Fitzpatrick from his days with the Rams, and so I'm liking these signing for the Bills. The downside here is for Lee Evans, as this move essentially signals the end of J.P. Losman's time in Buffalo, which means a lot less longballs for Evans.

Finally, the NBA did something right

Usually when the NBA makes decisions, they tend to be the wrong decisions. Most teams currently need to be bail-out and the league has a growing concussion problem.

However Dwayne Wade's decorative band-aids seem to be topping the list at the moment of the most important things that the NBA has to deal with. Wade's decorative band-aids have not been nullified by the league since they are used for decorative purposes as told to Wade by NBA spokesman Tim Frank.

Actually for once I do not disagree with the NBA, they cheesy as hell. Also, could open the flood gates for other things that the players could wear to sell their own merchandise. Wade is a great player but ditch the band-aids.

President Obama did get great seats...

If I think about this for a second, I do not remember the last time that a US president attend a NBA regular season game.

However Commander-in-Chief Barack Obama attended the Wizards home game against his hometown team, the Chicago Bulls. Obama invited the Bulls to the White House earlier and it figures that D.C.'s team was a little peeved by that.

The Wiz Kids blew out the Bulls, 113-90.

Stephon Marbury first basket as a Celtic

The Stephon Marbury situation never seemed to die but that melo-drama has finally ended as Marbury took the floor as a Boston Celtic against the Indiana Pacers.

Marbury ended his night playing thirteen minutes with eight points, two assists, and one steal.

Marbury and the Celtics beat the Pacers by the score of 104-99.

Käärisleivokset, ärsyttävän opettajan toiveiden mukaan turhautuneena tehtyinä. :D

I have been reading The Invasion of Mississippi by Earl Lively, Jr., put out in 1963 by the John Birch Society. It is a one-sided account of the southern response to the integration of the University of Mississippi. The following excerpts show how the Kennedy administration was viewed by the Right in those days (perhaps similar to how they view the Obama administration today?)

If anyone is oppressed in the South today, it is the white man. His laws are violated and struck down by edicts of a judicial oligarchy, his rights are trampled, and his land is repeatedly invaded by the brute force of a tyrannical federal Administration.
If President Kennedy should assume total power in a "crisis" situation, or if the South stews in racial strife until a race war divides the nation and so weakens it that soviet power could take control, the result would be the same in either case--we would be in the hands of a naked dictatorship

Jasmine Sinclair - UK Model

I am a professional and experienced fashion and glamour model currently based in Kent, England. I started modelling when my friend decided to send some photos to the Sun Newspaper and to my surprise they called me the next day asking me to come down to London for a shoot! Of course I jumped at the chance, left my boring job and haven't looked back since.

I have over 7 years experience in the industry and have been widely published in places such as The Sun, The Daily Sport, Revs Magazine, Toni and Guy magazine, Ann Summers catalogue and Loaded Magazine to name a few. I also have some television and film experience and this is an area I would love to expand on further.

My ambition is to be a successful and internationally recognized model and/or actress...I am only part way in achieving that so far! :-)

I really enjoy all aspects of modeling and am always looking for new and exciting assignments. I am happy to undertake anything from promotional assignments and fashion modeling, through to topless, page 3, tasteful nude and mild fetish. I will work with both amateur modeling photographer as well as professionals and will travel worldwide for the right assignments.

Denver Broncos apparently care about winning more than 8 games, sign 6 solid players

What do you do if you recently cut a bunch of players and freed up about $30 million in cap space? Well hopefully you spend some of it.

Well the Denver Broncos spent a lot of it on the first day of free agency, signing RBs J.J. Arrington and Correll Buckhalter, LS Lonnie Paxton, WR Jabar Gaffney and Safeties Brian Dawkins and Renaldo Hill. As a Patriots fan and a Dawkins fan, these moves make me wants to love the Broncos. But lets take a look at their actual effect, shall we?

Arrington and Buckhalter are good pieces, but interesting considering this was a team that was rumored to maybe take a run at Derrick Ward. Arrington is definitely more of a depth guy, given his great special teams play and his speedback style. Buckhalter is less understood. A lot of sites are saying that he will battle incumbents Peyton Hillis and Ryan Torain for the starting job, but what does this make of Selvin Young and Andre Hall? Give them all inconsistent carries like Shanahan did and watch them be inconsistent. Give Young or Torain or Hall the starting role and let them run with it and who knows what could happen. Considering Buckhalter is 31 and all the other guys are in their early to mid 20's, I don't see what Denver was thinking there.

Paxton seems like a great signing to me as he is one of the best at what he does, though it hurts me to see him go as a Patriots fan. Gaffney gives me similar feelings since he too is a former Patriot, but I actually think he might be the Broncos best signing as he'll form a sweeeet 3 WR set with Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal. Add in that he came at a very cheap $2.5 million a year with only $3 million guranteed, and that is a very solid low risk high reward signing.

As for the safeties, the Willenium in me loves the Dawkins signing because he is one of my favorite football players ever, but he's not quite the guy he used to be. Regardless, his leadership will be huge, and will hopefully help right the Denver defense. But Renaldo Hill? I get that Randy Moss is a beast, but it's hard to believe that a former DB coach would encourage his team to sign a guy who was lit up by his former team's WR like this. And like this. But hey, I'm not a head coach.

Today's Moment of Zen: "Play of the Decade"

Ah, 1994. The memories seem to fly back to everyone who lived in it. There was a time before Kevin Garnett that the Minnesota Timberwolves had a slam dunk champion and budding star in Isaiah "J.R." Rider.

However his most memorable play came from a regular season game against the Sacramento Kings when he took a pass that was overthrown, and threw the ball behind his head for a three point shot.

Hey look, an Olden Polynice sighting.

Kellen Winslow is a Tampa Bay Buccaneer

The Cleveland Browns traded away Pro Bowl TE Kellen Winslow today to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The picks have not yet been revealed, but it's an interesting trade given Winslow's high potential. As much as his injuries and disgruntled behavior have plagued this franchise, he was still a favorite target in the Browns passing game and now leaves Steve Heiden as the number one TE for the Browns.

In side news, Fred Taylor is officially a New England Patriot. I'm happy, though I've heard that the Patriots may consider cutting fan favorite Kevin Faulk since he's due $3.5 million in 2009. I really hope that's not the case.

In Memoriam: Johnny "Red" Kerr 1932-2009

We have some sad news to report at Outside the Boxscore, former Chicago Bulls coach and broadcaster Johnny "Red" Kerr has passed away at the age of 76 after a battle with prostate cancer.

Kerr was the Bulls head coach from 1966-1968 and then served as the color commentator for the 1975-2008. He truly was a legend among broadcasters and for those Bulls fan who grew up during the Jordan era in the '90s, he was one of the major voices of it.

Only a few weeks in the past on February 10th, 2009 was Johnny "Red" Kerr day in Chicago and the Bulls honored him by presenting a statue of him that would stand outside the stadium.

He was one of the finalist to be considered for the Basketball Hall of Fame and no doubt should be put in now after his timely demise.

The important thing about Kerr was that he kept an honest opinion and continued to cheer for the Bulls regardless of the team and it's make up. He will be missed along with Bulls legend Norm Van Lier who passed away earlier in the day.

Our condolences to his family and the Chicago Bulls organization for this loss.

Albert Haynesworth is the 100 million dollar man

Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth is now a 100 million dollar man as he has agreed to a deal with the Washington Redskins. The deal has been listed as a seven year deal worth up to 115 million dollars.

Haynesworth is one of the best defensive players in the game and helped Tennessee Titans to a AFC South division title.

This is the second big defensive free agent signing by the Redskins as they signed former Raiders defensive-back DeAngelo Hall to deal with up to 54 million dollars.

Holiday ♥

PS. Eilisistä porkkanaraejuustomuffinseista tuli aika yliherkkuja, en malta pitää näppejäni erossa niistä. 8--P

JoJo - appeared in America's Most Talented Kids; "I Believe In You and Me"

JoJo pictureJoJo's stage name comes from a childhood nickname.

At six years old, JoJo was offered a record deal, but Jojo's mother turned it down because Jojo's Mother believed she was too young for a music career.

After appearing on talk shows and the McDonald's Gospel Fest performing Whitney Houston's "I Believe In You and Me" and competing on the television show, America's Most Talented Kids, record producer Vincent Herbert contacted her and asked her to audition for Blackground Records.

Jason Terry should have bought ankle insurance

Remember that commercial for Kobe Bryant's new sneaker selling ankle insurance? (For those of you that do not, here it is.)

Well, it was clear that Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Terry did not buy them. Utah Jazz point guard Deron Williams crossed him in a game and thanks to this clever video, he broke his ankles.

Today's Moment of Zen: Gary Payton is living large....and legal

A couple of days ago, I posted Jason Kidd rapping on the infamous "B-Ball Best Kept Secrets." However, there were many others.

Gary Payton who is current working on NBA TV's "Game Night" produced a track called, "Livin Legal and Large."

Honestly, I will give "The Glove" credit for trying but I think I figured out why this CD did not sell. Also, alert NBA TV of this track and Chris Webber will have a field day with this.

Devin Hester - Amazing College Return

I was looking for this video of an amazing return by Joshua Cribbs and instead found the above video of Devin Hester from when he played at Miami. I still think the Cribbs video is more impressive because Duke sucked, but wow Hester has some talent.

Rasheed Wallace Buzzer Beater 3/26/07

I know there have been a lot of impressive buzzer beaters lately, but this shot has got to be up there with the best of them. Watch Rasheed Wallace hit from half court to send the game into OT for a Pistons win in 2007.

Duck Duck Goose?

This is one of the Greatest Touchdown Celebrations I've ever seen. The awesome begins at 33 seconds. (Ben's edit: A CFL game between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Hamilton Tiger-Cats circa 2007-2008)

Got to love the announcer. "Ooookay. Not sure about the celebration but it was a tremendous drive."

Nebraska chokes, +1 for Chappelle's Show reference

For those of you who did not get to see the Texas A&M and Nebraska game on Tuesday, he is the final six minutes where Nebraska blows a seven point lead and makes a myriad of mistakes near the end.

However, the real reason why this video is up is the comment made by color commentator Doug Gottlieb who drops the "Game Blouses" at the 8:15 mark.

Most of you probably know that it was a Chappelle's Show reference from the Charlie Murphy stories about Prince. If you did not, where the hell have you been?

Towel-Gate in Detroit--Update

The Detroit Pistons have slowly been falling off the map of the Eastern Conference playoff race and now they will be without Rasheed Wallace for their upcoming game against the Orlando Magic.

In the Pistons loss last night against the New Orleans Hornets, Wallace received a technical foul and then was ejected after he threw a towel that a ballboy gave him into the stands.

It's "Rasheed being Rasheed."

To quickly switch to the Pistons woes, they have lost eight straight and currently stand 7th in playoff seeding in the East. Could they miss the playoffs? That is entirely possible and looks like maybe Chauncey Billups was not the problem and Allen Iverson is definitely not "The Answer."

Update: Rasheed Wallace will not be suspended for the game against the Orlando Magic due the ruling that once a player has to acquire more than 15 technical fouls for the automatic one game suspension to take affect. Wallace up to this point had received 16 technical fouls but two of them were rescinded.

Wallace currently to date has 14 technical fouls.

Very recently, Hannah Storm of ESPN has suddenly received a following from the internet very similar to Erin Andrews when she first burst onto the scene.

Well one sports blogger has decided to create a collection of her recent wardrobe of her appearance of Sportscenter. Here they are: pictures of Hannah Storm

Hannah Storm has a comeback in her, doesn't she?

No, ehkä sitten joku päivä. 8))

Oi miten "kauniit" maisemat taustalla, kaupunkimme suuri Stora Enson tehdas.
Olemme todenneet Allun kanssa, ettemme osaa ottaa yhteiskuvia, koska toiselta puuttuu aina vähintään puolet päästä. :D Wou, alla olevassa kuvassa on jopa Allun molemmat silmät! Niin ja otsikseni on taas itsepäinen.
HAHA, nytpä saatte sitten nauttia hienosta taidennäytevideosti, NOT. XD Harmi vaan ettei puheesta saa melkein mitään selvää vaikka laittaisikin aika kovalle. No, liikkeeni kyllä ketovat kaiken oleellisen..

Loopupäivänä on minulla luvassa mm. porkkanamuffinsien leipomista, pakkaamista, kynsienlakkaamista ynnä muuta. Taikatalvenkin sain äsken luettua loppuun, on ne Muumit vaan söpöimpiä. ♥

PS. Otsikko on yksi Muumipeikon mietteistä Taikatalvessa.

Madison teen on new ‘Top Model’

A farmer’s daughter from Madison County makes her TV debut next week on “America’s Next Top Model,” the hit reality show with Tyra Banks a famous fashion model.

It’s the stuff that dreams are made of for Kelly “Isabella” Falk, a 2007 graduate of Madison County High School.

“It’s hard to believe that I am actually standing here,” she said on her interview video, now playing on YouTube. “I am taking it all in, one day at a time.”

Though Falk, 19, is unable to talk about her experience on “Top Model” until after the show airs, her father, Askel Falk, said Wednesday that the new season has been taped and that his daughter — a varsity volleyball star — is back home in Madison County.

“She really enjoyed it, and it opened her eyes a lot with how things really work on television,” he said.

Mr. Falk, a beef farmer in Aroda — a scenic, rural region in southern Madison — said his daughter traveled to New York and Las Vegas during her time on the show.

“Ever since she was real small, she’s been dying to get into modeling,” he said.

Mr. Falk said Kelly auditioned for the show last year in the Big Apple.

“I was really excited for her getting this opportunity,” he said. “In a small town like Madison, these things don’t usually happen.”

In her interview tape, Kelly said the creative aspect of fashion modeling attracted her, as well as being able to work with other creative professionals in the fashion field.

She hoped to be able to learn how to “strike a fierce pose” and how “to smile with my eyes.” Tall and slender, Kelly said her favorite food is fat-free cottage cheese with fresh raspberries.

“America’s Next Top Model,” entering its 12th season, follows a group of 13 young women who live together and vie for a modeling contract.

The new season of “America’s Next Top Model” kicks off March 4 at 8 p.m. on The CW Television Network.

Today's Moment of Zen: NHL's first ever kick assist...almost

Usually when I post something here dealing with the NHL, the most likely reason is that it is either a bizzare highlight or a goal by Alexander Ovechkin.

In a game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Vancouver Canucks from last Saturday, Toronto's Dominic Moore had a break-away opportunity to score. The only problem is that his stick broke from the previous play.

He decided to use some heads up thinking and use his skate to direct the puck to a team-mate. Very sadly, a save by goaltender Roberto Louongo ended the play as the Canucks ended up winning in a shoot-out 3-2.

Buccaneers Lose Minds, Cut Derrick Brooks

Today the Tampa Bay Buccaneers cut LB Derrick Brooks, RB Warrick Dunn, WRs Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard, and LB Cato June.

Galloway sure, he was injured basically all last year and did nothing. Hilliard and Dunn are nice pieces, but don't do nearly what they used to, though I'm sure Dunn will garner some interest in free agency. And June was decent for a LB, but guys like Quincy Black and Gerald Hayes might be able to replace him.

But cutting Derrick Brooks? The team claims the decision was made, as with Dunn, Hilliard, and Galloway, to get the team younger. So you want to cut a few injury plagued WRs, sure. But to cut your star 11 time Pro Bowl, 9 time All Pro, 2002 Defensive Player of the Year, 216+ consecutive starts, heart of your defense ROLB? Why in the world would you do that? Oh yeah, he's also heavily involved in community charity work and was a co winner of the 2000 Walter Payton Man of the Year award.

I understand trying to get younger. But you don't cut your leadership, and you especially don't cut your stars. And on a Buccaneers team that really doesn't have a whole lot unless Cadillac Williams gets good again, I really don't get this choice. But then again, they're the same people who franchised Antonio Bryant, so I guess I don't get anything this franchise is doing lately.

I wish Brooks the best in his next stop, and particuarly hope that it is in Cleveland, Ohio, as the Browns are LB desperate and he'd look damn pretty in orange and brown.

San Jose Vs. Detroit

1st period
Hossa with a goal through the five hole. Then Leino with a slap rebound out of the air after it flipped to him.
No goal it looked dangerous for the red wings but instead 2-0 red wings winning at the end of the first period.
(I watch it after it has recorded)

2nd period
Thorton instantly gos to the box.
Tripping no call you've got to like that.
Hossa doing his thing playing very well.

I personally thought Hudler might score this game? Everyone around me picked someone else to score.
Penaltey against us Datsyuk "Lady bing" for too long but that gave Zetterburg the chance to show his stuff by doing a spectacular spin after getting hooked badly.
Great pressure by Detroit in the second period.
Another power play!
Out of control...

499 career points this game total for Pavel Datsyuk. He just needs one more and I think he might surpass even that 500 point.

Hossa double teamed and checked horribly. Seemed kind of ruthless to me.

Rafalski rides that blue lie like a champ!
Datsyuk tries for his 500th with a good chance around 4:30 minutes. Datsyuk with a lot of hits this game and it's only the second period.

The birthday ages intrigued me a bit. All multiples of 9?

3rd period
Hossa might not come back in this game?

Did Murphy get speared? Thats what I was wondering.

Update...
(Hossa is not comming back this game hopefully next game)
Great play by Datsyuk around 8 minutes in kicking it to a teammate.

Ty Conklin looking good enough to start in the playoffs.
3-1 so far in the third. There is 6:00 minutes left.
3:36 left Boyle gets upset and retaliates against Datsyuk.
Of course Datsyuk draws the penalty.

Zetterburg sores like he likes to a lot of the time, from behind the net!
Making it 500 points with the assist from Datsyuk like I knew he would somehow.

The back pass by by Datsyuk around 1:30 minutes left was definitely worth seeing.
4-1 Red Wings win it!

Ty Conklin has a 12 game winning streak at home.

People want to know what the Kidd did....

Honestly, I was rolling on the floor laughing after I found this rap song by Jason Kidd. Yes, that Jason Kidd who currently is playing point for the Dallas Mavericks.

This is off the 1994 basketball rap CD, "B-Balls Best Kept Secrets" which featured many NBA players which included Shaquille O'Neal, Isaiah (J.R.) Rider, Dennis Scott, Brian Shaw, Cedric Ceballos, and a host of others. I will chronicle some of the other songs in "Today's Moment of Zen."

Again I feel like Carson Daly, here is Jason Kidd featuring Money B with "What the Kidd did." (Also, it ain't no party like a J Kidd party.)

Tiger's Back!

Remember when you used to watch golf, there was a time were most people did and today everything changes. The great Tiger Woods is back from injury and currently playing in the World Golf Championships against Brendan Jones.

For some reason, I feel a little bit sorry for Brendan Jones but it is nice to have Tiger back playing golf. He is one of the few recognizable faces in the golfing world and the sporting world in general.

The effort, charisma, and consistency are trademarks of Tiger and make him the elite athlete in golf. However what makes Tiger so amazing is skill and placement of small circular object where most people cannot even keep it straight.

Welcome back Tiger, we and golf missed you.

Panthers Release Goings, Hackett, Bridges

Today the Carolina Panthers released three veterans: RB Nick Goings, WR D.J. Hackett, and OL Jeremy Bridges in a cap related move.

Goings, an 8 year vet, was a special team great but otherwise hadn't done a whole lot since 2004, when he ran for 100 yards in 4 straight games after injuries to the rest of the Panthers backs. He was pretty expendable this year, however, after DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart took charge at the RB position, and will save the Panthers 820k.

Hackett was actually kind of a surprise to me. He'll save the Panthers 1.2825 million and he's always had troubles with injuries, but he's been pretty great when healthy. I understand that when you're struggling to get under the cap you have to make moves, but it's a shame they had to cut this guy, and I'm wondering if he'll receive interest from some WR starved team like the Bears or Eagles.

Bridges saved the Panthers $2.375 million, and that's a lot of money to save considering he was kind of a plug and play offensive lineman. Versitility is a plus, but sometimes it just means you're not good enough to start somewhere full time, and this is more a case of that. But he'll be back somewhere.

Also, apparently Ken Lucas may be cut or traded, saving the Panthers $2.375 million. But that's speculation more than anything.

Damon Huard, Several More Impressive Guys Cut

Yesterday, the Chiefs cut CB Patrick Surtain, LB Donnie Edwards, QB Damon Huard, and waived TE Michael Merritt. Most of these moves were expected, but they saved the team at leats about $10 million in cap room, mostly thanks to Surtain and Edwards.

Both Surtain and Edwards were stars were the team they played for prior to the Chiefs, but both of them had more recently battled injuries and age to the tune of lesser performance. They'll both certainly join another team next season, but not for anywhere near last year's price.

As far as Huard, aside from his miracle 2006 of 11 TDs and 1 INT in 8 starts, he's been sort of a career backup. And after Tyler Thigpen showed his talents last year, Huard was deemed too expensive a backup. He's had stops with several teams in the league, and so again I wouldn't be suprised to see Huard on a team this coming year.

Michael Merritt didn't do much in his one rookie season with the Chiefs, but he did sign very very late for a seventh rounder due to injury and get charged with marijuana possession. So can't say it was a total waste of a year for the rookie TE.

Deepwater Barreleye Fish Sports A Clear Canopy

The barreleye (Macropinna microstoma) has extremely light-sensitive eyes that can rotate within a transparent, fluid-filled shield on its head. In this image, although the barreleye is facing downward, its eyes are still looking straight up. This barreleye is about 6 inches (14 cm) long. The fish's tubular eyes, well inside the head, are capped by bright green lenses. The eyes point upward (as shown here) when the fish is looking for food overhead. They point forward when the fish is feeding. The two spots above the fish's mouth are not eyes: those are olfactory organs called nares, which are analogous to human nostrils. Deepwater Barreleye Fish Sports A Clear Canopy

Imagine, if you will, the ability to have a line of sight directly behind you as you walk down the street.

If a human were built like a Barreleye Fish, a strata of clear liquid and transparent skin at about ear level would replace hair, bone and flesh-tone skin and the eyes would be able to swivel 180 degrees. Bingo ... rear-view vision.

The Barreleye has a clear membrane skin cover for its forehead region and the upper front part of the fish's head is filled with a clear fluid. The eyes are set back inside and are positioned to be able to look forward, but more importantly, look up and see the light given off by deep water creatures as they ply the deep ocean trenches of our Oblate Spheroid.

Bruce Robison and Kim Reisenbichler of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute use videos from the institute's remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to study barreleyes off Central California. At depths of 2,000 to 2,600 feet (600 to 800 meters), the ROV cameras typically showed these fish hanging motionless in the water, their eyes glowing a vivid green in the ROV's bright lights. The video also revealed a previously undescribed feature of these fish — its eyes are surrounded by a transparent, fluid-filled shield that covers the top of the fish's head. Strange Fish Has See-Through Head

By LiveScience Staff - posted: 23 February 2009 03:01 pm ET

A bizarre deep-water fish called the barreleye has a transparent head and tubular eyes. Since the fish's discovery in 1939, biologists have known the eyes were very good at collecting light. But their shape seemed to leave the fish with tunnel vision.

Now scientists say the eyes rotate, allowing the barreleye to see directly forward or look upward through its transparent head.

The barreleye (Macropinna microstoma) is adapted for life in a pitch-black environment of the deep sea, where sunlight does not reach. They use their ultra-sensitive tubular eyes to search for the faint silhouettes of prey overhead.

Scientists had thought the eyes were fixed in an upward gaze, however. This would make it impossible for the fish to see what was directly in front of them, and very difficult for them to capture prey with their small, pointed mouths.
----
Most existing descriptions and illustrations of this fish do not show its fluid-filled shield, probably because this fragile structure was destroyed when the fish were brought up from the deep in nets.
----

Barreleyes, just a few inches long, are thought to eat small fishes and jellyfish. The green pigments in their eyes may filter out sunlight coming directly from the sea surface, helping the barreleye spot the bioluminescent glow of jellies or other animals directly overhead. When it spots prey (such as a drifting jelly), a barreleye rotates its eyes forward and swims upward, in feeding mode.

Another #1 falls in college basketball, there's a tournament, right?

The Providence Friars on senior night decided to put on a show for the fans as they upset the #1 ranked Pittsburgh Panthers 81-73. This is the 6th time in the past eight weeks that the number one seed was upset.

There were numerous upsets over the weekend of Texas over #2 ranked Oklahoma and Maryland over #3 ranked North Carolina. However, these upsets will probably mean little in the scheme of things because of a little thing called the NCAA tournament.

Do not get me wrong, it is possible that a team specifically Pittsburgh could be costed of a number one seed in the tournament due to one of these losses. However, I am going to assume at this point that Pittsburgh/UConn, UNC, Oklahoma, and Memphis are the leading candidates for those number one seeds.

This is not college football where the "one and done" rules begin to apply. Also, to add to the fact, getting a number one seed in the NCAA tournament does not guarantee you a championship.

However give props to Providence for their victory and March Madness can not come soon enough.

Today's Moment of Zen: Rich Eisen runs the 40-yard dash

With the combine winding down, Rich Eisen of the NFL network decided to take his customary chance to run the 40-yard dash.

Eisen eventually clocked in at a pedestrian 6.34 but that was in a suit after working for four hours. (I got to give him some credit at least.)

However the funniest part was when the NFL Network staffers super-imposed combine clips of 40-yard dash times with Rich Eisen. Is he faster than B.J Raji?

Lebron is human, proof is in the gas!

I honestly cannot believe that I did not find this clip before but I guess it is better late than never.

During the Cavaliers game against the Detroit Pistons, an ESPN camera panned towards the bench as Lebron James walked out of the locker room. Anderson Varejao was sitting right next to him, then it happened.

Varejao "acted" more than on any flop of his career. The smile from Lebron just sealed it. Honestly, I really cannot think of a way to end this piece but I guess I'll let this one go.

Happy Pisces New Moon!

Welcome to Pisces New Moon, which commences on Tuesday February 24th 5:34pm (PST). Naturally, like all my New Moon reports you can find it HERE. It is an interesting New Moon to me in that there are not a bunch of strong aspects to the Moon and the Sun. This is a bit of a relief to me since the last few lunar cycles have been launched by some king of aspect to either an outter planet or inner planet. We don't have a lot of moons where the Sun & Moon just sit there all by themselves radiating the essence of the sign without some outside influence. I think it is also extraordinary that this moon is coming before our big fat Treasure Map moon. To me, I think we can look at the next 28 days as like a big bath. We will be emotional and our feelings will be pronounced but this is a good thing. Let those feelings wash through us and out of us. After the long lunar bath we'll be ready for Aries! Here is a snippet from my article
Freedom is as Freedom does

For the last dozen or so years while
Pluto trekked through Sag it threw daggers at Pisces. If you question the
power of Pluto’s arsenal ask any Pisces how they made it through the last few
years and they’ll give you a shell shocked answer. But now Pluto is aiming
its salvos at others signs freeing Pisces from his shackles. What does
this mean for this lunar cycle? It means that we will have a bit more
freedom to access the magic, the dreaminess and the beauty of Pisces. We
had some opportunity in previous Pisces cycles but the way we got there was
always a hard path. Now we get the perks of Pisces in an effortless
way. We can bump around in the day and night maybe running into
someone or hearing about something that just ‘feels’ like it might be
important. Not in a scary, ‘uh-oh” way but in a subtle, “hmmm” way.
It has been a long time since we had this kind of Pisces energy. In
all fairness last year’s Pisces New Moon also had Pluto in Capricorn but at that
time Pluto was getting ready to go retrograde so it was not as free of an energy
as now.

I believe we are finally getting this nice liberated
Pisces cycle for a reason. We have a New Moon in Aries next month and that
will be our Treasure Map moon (for more on that go here) where we plot and plan
the things we would like to have in the next year. But before we get
to that moon we are getting this gentle, soft, emotional yes, but still a much
more liberated Piscean Moon. It is almost as if the Universe wanted us to
let down our guard and let the mystical side of ourselves run free and
unencumbered before we sit down and map out our goals next month.

I'm so sorry...

I know I have been MIA for the last week and I apologize. I am involved in not for profit work and this is the crunch time of the year for me. Not every week but the last one was a bit harder than others. I should have a bit more time now and will be able to post more.
Bear with me ---I am not abandoning you just give me a day or two.
Thanks.

Nate Robinson shakes and Will Ferrell bakes....

Nate Robinson last night dropped a 41 point performance in the Knicks victory over the Indiana Pacers. One of his biggest fans was there in movie star Will Ferrell and it looks like that Nate is returning the feelings.

It was noted in a post-game interview that Robinson gave Ferrell the "krypto-Nate" jersey from the Slam Dunk Contest.

Is this the next bro-mance? Let's wait until Nate Robinson sings, "Love Me Sexy."

Devin Harris pulls out a miracle

The game last night between the New Jersey Nets and the Philadelphia 76ers appeared to be a road win for the 76ers by the score of 96-95. They also appeared well on there way to snapping a three game losing streak. However Nets point guard Devin Harris pulled out a half-court buzzer-beater for the ages.

Harris ended the game with 39 points in the Nets 98-96 victory. The shot itself looked damn near impossible in less than two seconds but the replays all show that the ball is out of Harris's hands after the shot.

That play is almost reminisce of Milt Pilacio in 2001. Unbelievable.

Today's Moment of Zen: "Ram It"

Remember the 1980's, those were some fun times. NFL teams during that period of time decided on a corny idea to create team music videos.

Many teams had them. One of the best was the Los Angeles Rams with their trademark diddy "Ram It" as the band, "The Rammers". Maybe, they could have thought of the possible ramifications and possible double entandras in their music video.

Oh well, here it is and remember, "I like to ram it as you can see, nobody likes ramming it more than me."

Seven Days To Go

We have seven more days to go on this vacation and it seems like it is going way too fast. While we aren't pushing ourselves, just about every day has been filled with things to do. We have been eating WAY too much and indulging slightly in adult beverages--but that is what you DO on vacation! Yesterday we spent the day at the Kennedy Space Center--so unbelievably amazing! I DO have a lot of pictures that I will be posting, but they don't do justice to what we saw. Today we spent the day at Downtown Disney and had just as awesome of a day. We are going down the Atlantic coast tomorrow and will get to Epcot later in the week. Every day another 'adventure.' How cool is this? :)

Fred Taylor - Future New England Patriot?

We already covered that Fred Taylor was cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, today NFL.com reported that he is visiting the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday and the New England Patriots on Wednesday. And as a Patriots fan, I could not be more hopeful/excited.

For one, I don't think the Bills will sign Taylor. I think he'd play well for them, but Marshawn "Beast Mode" Lynch and his above Ghost Riding Skills won't be denied the ball, even if he can't stay out of legal trouble. And the Bills already have a solid backup in Fred Jackson, who does a decent Beast Mode himself.

As for the Patriots? Laurence Maroney has never proven much of anything. Sammy Morris is nice (and also has beast mode capabilities), but he's not a feature back. And Kevin Faulk is a fan favorite and one of the better third down backs ever (and a big Lil Wayne fan), but again, not a feature back.

So where does Taylor fit in? Hard to totally say, but he definitely could. Morris is more of a tough yardage back, while Faulk fills that 3rd down/pass catcher out of the backfield role. Taylor is a bit of both, and as such could handle a lot of 1st and 2nd down duties, especially if Maroney went down and was cut. Granted, cutting Maroney would seem like kind of a waste, given that he was once a first round pick. But I'm much rather the Pats have Taylor available to light it up among four RBs than a Morris/Faulk/Heath Evans three man attack when Maroney, inevitably, goes down. I'd be curious to see if Taylor or Maroney would/could play some special teams were the team to sign Taylor and keep 4 RBs, as that would make the roster spot less of a luxury.

Regardless, Patriots please sign Fred Taylor if the money is right. Defense is a far more pressing need that Offense for this team (especially at LB), but it's always nice to have a stud RB on your team, and Taylor is still more than capable of getting it done.

Rich Eisen is smarter than an NFL combiner.....

Ah, the glory of the NFL combine. The 40-times, the players who do not show up on schedule, and the late-rounders who upgrade themselves from 6th round pick to a 4th round pick.

However, Rich Eisen of the NFL Network decided to see if he was smarter than an NFL player at the combine by taking the infamous wonderlic test.

The wonderlic test is a fifty question test used to check the players intellect. Only one NFL player Harvard's own Pat McInally have scored perfectly on the test. Could Eisen be the second? Watch the video and see.

Combine Casualties

I always thought of the NFL Combine as a time of hope. All of these players come out and try to show their best, hoping to get drafted by a decent team, or even at all in the case of some players. This year, however, has been different, as all sorts of players are having issues with injuries and the like, preventing them from showing much of anything to anyone. These include:

- USC LB Rey Maualuga came up limping at the end of his 40 yard dash. He'll still likely be drafted very high anyways though, given his high level of play, extreme tenacity, and good taste in sideline reporters.

- Texas DE Brian Orakpo limped off the field as well. One of the better DE prospects in the draft, Orakpo projects as an OLB. He's also a Law Student and a Beast.

- In one of the saddest stories of the day, NU TE Brian Mandeville was told that he ought to retire due to a non life threatening issue with one of his heart valves. NU is a small school and it's pretty amazing, as a result, to be combine invited from there. So it's a shame that Mandeville had this happen, and we here at Outside the Boxscore hope everything works out for him, NFL or no NFL.

- Lastly, and non injury related, the story of the weekend seemed to be Alabama OT Andre Smith missing Saturday's combine workout. Smith claims that he accomplished just about everything he wanted by answering questions and giving his weight among other things, and that he had then left earlier than scheduled to begin working out for the March 11th Pro Day. He didn't work out for the combine because he just switched trainers and didn't feel he could impress everyone as he hoped to. Hopefully when he does work out it'll be impressive enough to win over all of those people who have been befuddled with his decisions so far.

Did Dwight Howard just do that?

Very sadly, I did not get a chance to watch the Miami Heat take on the Orlando Magic. What I did miss was Dwayne Wade dropping his career high 50 points but Dwight Howard was more magical than that.

Howard had 32 points and 17 rebounds in the Magic 122-99 victory. However during the pre-game he attempted the shot in the video above and made it.

I guess TNT made the wrong decision on who should have been in the Horse Competition.

Damn right it's better than yours

LEMPIPINNIT
-Tuo vasemmassa yläkulmassa oleva suht iso Barbie-rusetti on ihan ykkönen.
- neonpinkki satiinirusetti on sekin Helsingistä, ja ostin sen siltä samaiselta HIM:n keikkareissulta Backstreetiltä.

LEMPIKAULAKORUT

XD
- vesimelonihaman olen senkin itse tehnyt.

LEMPIKORVIKSET
- vannon korviksissa isoejen ja muovisten killuttimien nimeen, joten suurin osa korviksistani on jotain H&M:n halppiksia, kuten nämä isot pisaranmuotoiset pinkit.

Kellon merkki on muuten Leijona.
- pääkallokellokin on joululahjaksi saatu, tosin toissajouluna. Senkin merkki on Leijona.
Tuo on joku viimesyksyn löydös H&M:ltä.
- vaaleanpunaisen helmirannekorun olen taiteillut itse.

Bling Bling.
- mustavaaleanpunaiset helmet olen tehnyt itse.
- noita värikkäitä puuhelmirannekoruja on oikeasti kaksi, mutta toisesta katkesi kuminauha, kun olen nekin itse tehnyt jostain Tiimarin helmistä.
- ehkä suosikkini on tuo turkoosi isohelminen koru, jonka ostin joskus ala-asteella kirpparilta samaan aikaan kun ostin siihen sopian kaulakorun samasta pöydästä.

LEMPIAURINKOLASIT
- ylivoimaisesti parhaat ovat nuo viime kesänä Nelliinan arvonnasta voitetut sydänihanuudet. En voita ikinä arvonnoista mitään, joten noiden voitto oli sitäkin makeampi. Noista tulee kyllä ihan kesä mieleen. :)
- kullanväriset pilottilasit ovat Itiksen H&M:ltä, olen näköjään tehnyt Itiksessä paljon onnistuneita ostoksia! Noissa on kivoja "timantteja" tuossa edessä.

LEMPIPONNARIT
- punaiset Hello Kittyt on H&M:ltä, ylläri.
- pilkulliset rusettipinnit ovat Lindexistä löydetty söpöys.

LEMPIPANNAT
- pilkullisen rusettipannan ostin viime toukokuussa siltä Hesanreissultamme Accessorizesta.

- musta joustava kangasvyö on sekin äidin vanha, jostain 80-luvulta. Tykkään tuosta varsinkin tuon sen soljen vuoksi, ja on muutenkin kiva käyttää äidin vanhoja nuoruusvaatteita. =D

LEMPILAUKUT

Mukavaa viikonalkua. ♥
