Derrick Rose: Cap 2.0

With apologies to Tim and any other hobbled Celt fans reading, here's the post-game sweat-drip interview with Derrick Rose. I took note of this interview because it's so deadpan. The interviewer, which you could see on TV but is not shown in this vid, walks away from the interview visibly and audibly shook. She barely quavered out the obligatory, "Back to you, Dan." Rose seems to trot out platitudes simply to placate the masses. If you ever have trouble sleeping, I'm sure you could throw on a track of Rose interviews and quickly hit soporificity. It's funny, the majority of taciturn basketball stars have been big men. Noteable tight-lippers were Patrick Ewing* and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, whose record Rose tied today for most points scored in a playoff debut.

Of course, Kareem went on to play opposite Bruce Lee in Game of Death and Roger Murdock in Airplane!. cementing his stature as a pop icon as well as an NBA star. If Rose has half the career of Cap, well that'd be a solid 19,193.5 points scored, good for 46th on the all time list (so far), ahead of guys like Reggie Theus, Scottie Pippen, Bob McAdoo, Dave Bing, and World B. Free. Noting Cap's incredible career, here's a vintage interview with him after breaking Wilt Chamberlain's career scoring record. This also features the immortal Chick Hearn. Love the banter here. Hopefully Derrick can come out of his shell at least enough to show us, like Kareem did and does, what the shell is for. Kareem won a championship in his sophomore tour. Doesn't look like Rose will match that, but you never know, and that's why they play the games.

Striking from the interview is also the fact that Kareem talks about freshman not being able to play college ball. How far we've...fallen? Also, with many taciturn players, it seems like a defensive mechanism. With Rose, it almost seems as if he can't be bothered.

*Watching the "Snacklish" Snickers commercials with the retro look like the Patrick Chewing bit, it occurs to me that they're just running the 1-second commercials that high-life suggested during the Superbowl. Cool that it's fan-interactive. Become the MVP-nut!
