Keith "Tiny" Gallon Shatters in a New Year

To be honest, I did not expect anything note-worthy to come from the college hoops affair between Gonzaga and Oklahoma at the Spokane Arena.

Well, Oklahoma's Keith "Tiny" Gallon decided to make himself note-worthy enough before the end of 2009 by shattering a backboard.

"Send it in, Tiny!"

Full Moon Lunar Eclipse December 31

At 2:14pm (EDT) was a lunar eclipse. I say "was" because I am posting this about 3 hours after the fact. But the effects are still in play.

As you know a lunar eclipse is a Full Moon where the shadow of the Earth masks part or all (depending on your vantage point) of the moon. There is usually a POP that we feel somewhere in our life depending on where the eclipse takes place in our chart. Look at your own chart and see where 10 degree cancer lies. Do you feel down? Do you feel unloved? Do you feel a bit off? Yeah, that's all eclipse stuff.

Of course, the energy of this full moon will be felt for about 3 days.
A bit crabby, a bit melancholy, a bit 'what's the use', a bit down. But under the sadness or low energy is something more important. We are being asked to take more responsibility. If there are things in our life that aren't working, what disciplines can we activate that will help us get the life that we want? Responsibility and rebuilding our lives is very Capricorn. And remember, the Full Moon happens when the Sun is opposite The Moon. The Sun is at 10 Capricorn, reminding us that we can accomplish much if we just start doing the work. Bit by bit.

Additionally, This full moon has a beautiful conjunction between the Sun and Venus and Pluto and a wide aspect with Mercury. There are a lot of tools at our disposal---if we use them. If you want to lose weight you have got everything from Weight Watchers to friends who are dying to exercise with you. If you need to meet a mate, Match.com or one of the others is just a few clicks away. If you need to bring in more money, what skills or resources in your own life are you neglecting? There are tools there for you, use this full moon to find them.

one other note, in Mountain Astrologer, Stephanie Austin indicated that this Full Moon eclipse is similar to the one we had on December 30, 2001. Are you revisiting topics from then?

Seriously Purdue, Seriously?

On the level of things you need to see, this is one of those things that ranks up their pretty high.

Purdue University decided to show their gratitude to their alumnus for their donations by producing this interesting music video thanking them.

What I mean by interesting is still to be determined.

networks

At this point, the following piece of prose is the preface of my thesis. I am posting it for BT because of a conversation we had today - a conversation that rambled all over the place, held together by a very strong thread, a conversation that reminded how very precious the networks were that exist between creative friends.

jack’s story

I never met him. He told me the story over the phone. There was real sorrow and regret in his voice. Regret that they hadn’t got to her in time, that she hadn’t shared her pain so they could stop her. Even after she jumped they could have saved her, if only she had held on another minute.

You see he already had the deaths of the other 2 girls on his conscience. He looked for them for 4 days but their bodies were never found, ever. He said the sharks had got them, the ones that hung around the whaling station 50 years ago. Many long years later he is still sad about those girls, the grief in his voice seeps down the phone line. It was his fault, he told them to go there. It was their pretty skirts, he said, the wind had caught them. They were just young girls, sightseeing, but he should have known about those full skirts, the ones they wore in the 50s. He desperately needed to find some kind of explanation, so he chose that one. It didn’t assuage his guilt. The recent drowning made him relive the pain all over again but he still needed to talk about it.

Because it went even further back to when his own friend took his life. That was his fault too. They tried to ring – but no-one got there in time, like this last one, just too late.

These days he is too old to go out in the boat so he mans the two-way radio in the local sea rescue. Still trying to save people and feeling bad about the ones he couldn’t then and still can’t. (Journal entry, 5 October, 2008)

Lost In Translation

I don't believe I have ever posted this story. If I have, sorry. Hope you enjoy.

As I have said before, my great-grandparents never learned to speak English--despite the fact they lived here in the US for over 60 years. Actually, they really didn't need to learn, as they lived in a part of the country where a great many Finnish people lived. (The UP of Michigan has the largest concentration of Finnish people outside of Finland.) This didn't cause too many problems for them, unless they were confronted with the telephone.

My g-grandfather never used the telephone very often. I'm not sure if it was because of his lack of being able to speak English or a distrust of technology. There were, however, times when he HAD to answer the phone. He had quite a unique way of doing this. The phone would ring, he would pick up the receiver and announce, "Nobody home." (in an EXTREMELY thick Finnish accent), and hang up. End of phone call.

Great-grandma, however, used the phone every day. With her love of gossip, I don't believe she could have been apart from the phone for an entire day. She did fine, usually. And one day she had trouble. For some reason, she wasn't dialing the number she wanted correctly--she kept getting the recorded message "The number you want cannot be completed as dialed. Please dial the operator for assistance." After getting this message several times in a row, g-grandma got extremely frustrated, screamed in the phone "I don't give a shit your sister," and banged the receiver down. Obviously, she mistook 'assistance' for 'sister' and let the 'operator' know, in no uncertain terms, that she really doesn't care.

Just Call Me Betty Crocker

I don't bake. At all. Anymore. K and I certainly don't need to eat the stuff--we both need to lose way too much weight--and I just don't feel like spending the time doing it. But this wasn't always the case.

The years we gave Christmas gifts to every person we know (and some that I'm sure we DIDN'T know), I would bake and give the baked goods as gifts. And I was totally crazy in the amount of stuff I would bake. This is my list from years gone by:

  • Nisu-12 loaves (this is Finnish cardomon sweet bread)
  • Cranberry bread-6 loaves
  • M&M cookies-2 batches
  • Sugar cookies-1 batch
  • Peanut butter kiss cookies-2 double batches
  • Spritz cookies-1 batch each of three flavors
  • Caramel corn-4 batches
  • Chex party mix-8 batches
  • Fudge-4 batches
  • Peanut brittle-2 batches
I just get tired writing that list. A bit nuts, right? And I did it every year for way too long. If I didn't have at least 10 dozen of each of the various cookies I made in the freezer by the second week of December, I was way behind. As it was, I didn't finish up my baking until a half hour before the last gift had to be delivered on Christmas Eve.

And all of that is over. This year I made my mustard sauce, Oreo truffles, ham & cheese crescents, cowboy caviar, mulled apple cider and ham & pineapple cracker spread. Period. I really like this minimalist attitude I have developed.

As is the way it is supposed to be, my Christmas baking tradition has been passed down to the next generation. While both of my girls do a lot of baking, I only get to sample what The Youngest does. Her 'big' gift to us every year is a basket of baked goods. And I must say, she does me proud. This year we got: 3 different kinds of cookies, caramel corn, Chex mix, nisu, cranberry bread, and prune AND apricot pinwheel tarts. I am so impressed with her: She makes pinwheel tarts and I have never made any in my life. And this is despite the fact that they are a big Finnish tradition here.

Piwheel prune tarts are one of the things that most of us just can't wait for at Christmastime. You start with a sweetened pastry dough and cut out squares. You then cut the squares so that you can fashion piwheels out of the pastry. Before folding the edges in, you put a spoonful of a prune mixture in the middle of the pastry square. (To make the mixture, you boil prunes till soft. Then you add a bit of lemon juice and sugar and mash. Also, some people prefer apricots instead of prunes, so a lot of people make both kinds.) You then fold in the edges to make a small pinwheel-shaped pastry and bake. (All of this prep has been made much easier with the manufactured tart cutters that are now available.) After baking, some people drizzle a bit of a glaze on top--as my mother-in-law did. These are the greatest things in the world to eat--if they are made correctly. And The Youngest makes them correctly. I am absolutely in awe of her skills. And I ate more than half of the tarts--both prune AND apricot.

And now for too much information: My body is not liking what I did to it, still. That is the one thing I DON'T like about these--I eat WAY too many, WAY too fast. And I pay the price for many days after. But that is what the holidays bring--too much indulgence. And that isn't too bad a thing, as long as it ends in a reasonable amount of time. ;)

Real Randy Moss vs Fake Randy Moss

During Sunday's Jacksonville Jaguars-New England Patriots affair, Patriot wide-receiver Randy Moss caught three touchdown passes but it was a Fake Randy Moss who got all the attention.

While the third touchdown was under review, cameras panned to see someone in the crowd sporting a Randy Moss mask.

Then some good nature tomfoolery occurred, Randy Moss being Randy Moss.

Also, for those of you who wanted a close-up of the interaction or a better angle of it live, I posted these other videos as well.

Everything is never as it seems

Moi! Vuorossa pikainen postaus. :)

Lahjoista puheen ollen: katsokaas mitä Vilu kiikutti minulle joululahjaksi. ♥

!! PINKKI-MUSTAN niittivyön! ♥__♥ Tuiii.

En kuitenkaan halua niitä palauttaa, joten tyydyn siis noihin. Olisiko kellään vinkkejä miten ne saisi kutistumaan?

Toinen paketti osoittautui blogiarvontavoitosta, josta mainitsin vähän aikaa sitten. :) Whii.

Suklaata, kaulakoru ja discopallo-huulirasva. :--)

Tällaista tällä kertaa. Olen joko tänään tai huomenna lähdössä Hannan kämpälle viettämään uutta vuotta ja muutenkin yökyläilemään, joten en tiedä yhtään milloin seuraava postaus on tulossa..

Viettäkäähän kaikki mahtava uusi vuosi! :) En kyllä tiedä miten opin sanomaan vaikka 25.1.10..

Week 16 NFL Prediction Battle Recap

Jay Cutler and the Bears beat the Vikings...wow. Who saw that coming?

Well my friends, Ben of Outside the Boxscore saw that coming in his weekly NFL Predictions this week. That win was enough to put his weekly record at 8-8, with incorrect win picks including Buffalo, Oakland, Miami, Baltimore, Jacksonville, New Orleans, St. Louis, and Indianapolis.

Sadly for Ben, the GSNHOF once again picked one better, finishing the week at 9-7. Incorrect win picks included Minnesota, Indianapolis, Miami, Tennessee, New Orleans, the NY Giants, and Oakland.

With those games in the books, the standings for this year's NFL Prediction Battle now sit at:
163-77 - Great Sports Name Hall Of Fame
141-98 - Outside The Boxscore (22 Games Back)

One week of regular season predictions left, so let's hope that Ben and I saved our best picks for last!

kali yuga

While typically bemoaning the state of the world to a ‘wise old friend’ I discovered something encouraging. Apparently it is nobody’s fault that we are in a state of degeneration. Cosmic forces have been at work. According to Hindu scripture, for the past 5,111 years the world has been in an age of ‘vice’ called the Kali Yuga, the era of the ‘male demon’. Given the dominance of the male gender, scientific rationalism and the destruction of Mother Earth, this sounds about right.

The Kali Yuga is referred to as a Dark Age because human civilisation ‘degenerates spiritually’ and morally during this particular turn of the wheel. It is associated with the apocalypse demon Kali (not to be confused with the goddess Kali, although I don’t know why not - Goddess Kali is a destructive bitch herself but she is just taking revenge I reckon) That might also explain the apocalyptic thinking that seems to dominate our era and the many apocalyptic dreams I have had.

Some believe we are now in a new phase of the cycle or that we are on the verge of starting one. Bring it on I say! According to Swami Sri Yukteswar ‘we are in recent transition from the lowest material age, the Kali Yuga, into the electrical or atomic age, the Dwapara Yuga’.

In this era we ‘begin to see the world as more transparent as we move from an awareness of self as a physical body in a strictly physical universe, to an awareness that we are something more’. Given my own journey on the planet and my thesis, that sounds about right too.

I will keep looking into this, but for now, I am happy to be deluded that things will change.

Sebastian Janikowski hits 61-yard Field Goal

Although the Oakland Raiders lost their week 16 match-up against the Cleveland Browns, Oakland Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski had something to celebrate.

At the end of the first half, he drilled the fourth longest field goal in NFL history with a 61-yard field goal. (The longest kick is still 64 yards by Saints kicker Tom Dempsey)

Many people scoffed at Al Davis for drafting Janikowski in the first round of the 2000 NFL Draft; I guess they were wrong on that one.

It wouldn't surprise me to see him hit a 76-yarder in a game, remember?

Michelle Beadle goes all "Akron Hammer" on us

Recently, ESPN SportsNation had their final show of the year where they went through some of the best moments and viral videos of the year. (I.E. An excuse to put Michelle Beadle in a costume, no doubt)

The SportsNation story of the year was the creation of the Lebron James nickname, "Akron Hammer" by Michelle and well, the above video contains enough Akron Hammer references to make Colin Cowherd scream bloody murder.

Poor Colin, this will never end, will it?

Mercury is retrograde....but you had to have already known!

On December 26 at 9:38am (EST)---Mercury turned Retrograde.
I'm sure you guys are already feeling it. I know I am. Confusion about dates and people's expectations, lost glasses, batteries broken, miscommunication...yeah, I'm already feeling it.

Back on New Moon I wrote the following:

Mercury Retrograde

Well, what the heck… in the middle of this Sag Lunar cycle where we are redefining goals and stretching for more and then adjusting ourselves, we get a big fat Mercury Retrograde. On December 26 Mercury will Retrograde 9:39am (21 Cap 47). This is a pragmatic retrograde. I think it is quite ironic that the Sag lunar cycle is about bringing in MORE and Expanding our world but Mercury in Capricorn is about “practical application” Construction and building something from the ground up . God knows we all understand how Mercury goes backward and we can’t find our keys, our computer freezes, emails are lost, things go screwy but when Mercury is in Cap we are going to have to slow down and really make sense of our life. Is the theory of our life way too big and misguided than the practicality? Yes, I want to be healthy but if I do not have a structured exercise program than how is it going to be accomplished? And if my computer freezes or my car breaks on a Mercury retrograde, I gotta ask, “should I have bought a new computer years ago but was unwilling to do it?” Or should I have taken my car to get a tune up in August but skipped it? Practicality serves our minds and our worlds greatly during this retrograde.

Also, the Sabian Symbol for 22 degrees of Capricorn is “ A General accepting defeat gracefully.” Obviously, when we learn from experience (Capricorn word) we can cut our losses and move on to more fulfilling environment.

And for those who like to follow the shadow period-----
9th December 2009 - 13:37:39 - Mercury shadow began (5 cp 33'16")26th December 2009 - 14:38:07 UT - Mercury stationed retrograde (21 cp 47'43")15th January - 16:51:49 UT - Mercury stations direct ( 5 cp 33'16")4th February - 07:03:55 UT - Mercury shadow ends (21 cp 47'44")

How was your Christmas?

As most of you may remember, on Christmas Eve we had our annual Sun conjunct Pluto event.
Last year was our first run of the two in the sign of Capricorn.

And then on Christmas we had a big old square between the Sun in Capricorn and Saturn in Libra. If any of you got out of the holidays without a fight with your husband or wife, without a huge brawl with your family and without a completely miserable experience then consider yourself one of the Lucky Ones! It was a shitty couple days.

And no surprise to any astrologer that during that two day period there was the flight between Amsterdam and Detroit with the cuckoo terrorist-lite jerk.

Now, if you look back on your Christmas and feel really yucky, do yourself a favor and plan next year's Christmas now. What would it look so that it is an improvement on this year? What would make it more meaningful? What changes do you need to make? Capricorn is a pragmatist--so in order to make the most of the this year, get practical. Get out your 2010 Calendar and write down exactly how you want Dec 25 2010 to look. Do it now. Don't hang on to sadness, bitterness about this year get PROACTIVE for next year.

Many Apologies.....

My last post was one week ago. Please forgive me, I had relatives in for the holidays and it was pedal to the metal entertaining.
I had meant to get here every day but ended up going to bed out of sheer exhaustion!
I will attempt to make up some lost time.

Brandon Stokley must have had a "Slap Bet"

During the Philadelphia Eagles match-up with the Denver Broncos, Broncos wide receiver Brandon Stokley was ejected in the second quarter for arguing a call.

At first, we were not really too sure why we was ejected. Then this replay shows, he brought out his slap hand.

Marshall Erickson would have been proud.

Tom Benson's "Premature Celebration"

One of the shockers of week 16 of the NFL season was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers upsetting the New Orleans Saints.

Saints kicker Graham Hartley missed a chance to win it with a 36-yard field goal at the end of regulation.

For some reason Saints owner Tom Benson thought he made it and this "premature celebration" happened.

Darren Helm Saves The Day

A 2-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Thanks to Darren Helm who stopped the puck from inevitably going in and of course I cannot forget Todd Bertuzzi for scoring the only 2 goals we had.

1 minute 22 seconds
It truly does not get any closer than that except when the puck hit both post earlier in the game. I think it was Lidstrom who shot it but I'am not sure?
WELCOME BACK FILLPULA!

Maybe Later

A month or so ago we heard the news that K's nephew's oldest daughter was pregnant. She was finishing up her last bit at the university and was on her way to begin her life and she got side tracked a bit. Last night, we got the phone call that she lost the baby. He was 17 weeks old, about 6" long and perfect in every way. There is no explanation as to what the problem was and there probably never will be. I am incredibly sadden by this because it brings back memories of C losing her first son 7 years ago. I want to DO something to make things better, but know there is nothing I CAN do. It is hard to feel so powerless. This just brings another depressing element to the Christmas season for K's family. (His Dad died a couple of weeks before Christmas, so that anniversary is always there.)

I have a few ideas for posts, but they tend to be whimsical and humorous--emotions I'm not feeling at the moment. I'm sure things will be better tomorrow. Stay tuned...

Terry Bradshaw Pittsburgh Steelers

The ability to bounce back from adversity is part of being a champion. But no one should have to take the abuse Terry Bradshaw did on his road to greatness. For the first six years of his NFL career, he was humiliated by his coach, teased by the press, laughed at by his teammates and booed by the fans. He was branded a gutless loser, a choke artist and a country bumpkin. Yet every time Terry Bradshaw seemed down and out, he came back and gave it another try. That strength of spirit led the Pittsburgh Steelers to a Super Bowl in 1975. Then another. Then two more. Suddenly his detractors were talking about a dynasty and calling him one of the toughest and smartest big game quarterbacks of all time.

In professional football, most positions require that you do one thing very well. However, if you are a quarterback you have to be good at many aspects of the game. When Terry Bradshaw was drafted by the Steelers in 1970, all he could do was throw the football.

Because Bradshaw could read NFL defenses, he waited too long before releasing the ball and was creamed on virtually every play, breaking his wrist and ribs and injuring his neck in the early days of his career. When he hurried, he was iintercepted a league leading 46 times in his first two seasons. Finally, when he didn't know what to do, he was benched.

By 1974, the Steelers had put together a great defense, a great offensive line and a great running game. All they needed was a quarterback who was adequate, but coach Chuck Noll decided Terry Bradshaw wasn't even that! Then, midway through the season, Noll had a change of heart and reinserted him into the lineup with strict instructions not to go crazy throwing the ball, but to just hand it off. Three months later, the Steelers defeated Minnesota in Super Bowl IX.

Still, respect was hard to come by. Even after Bradshaw won Super Bowl X, it took two more years for the NFL to realize it had a true winner. In 1978, Bradshaw honed the Pittsburgh aerial attack to perfection, leading the AFC in passing and blowing away Denver and Houston to reach Super Bowl XIII against the Dallas Cowboys. After the Steelers' 35-31 win, in which Bradshaw threw for a record 318 yards and four TDs, he was named the game's MVP. This finally put an end to any questions about Bradshaw's ability to think and throw with the best of them.

Overcoming Adversity

When Bradshaw retired from pro football, he had the reputation of being one of the most mentally tough quarterbacks in NFL history. A man who never gave up no matter how bad things got. He might never have been that resilient were it not for the chilly reception he received as a rookie in 1970. This adversity forced him to build up the confidence and strenth
that helped him throughout his career.

bloody tourists

They tell me it’s complex. I am tired of people hiding behind that particular euphemism for ‘you don’t know what you are talking about so you should listen to me because I do’.

Having just moved to Denmark I find that many residents here have an issue with the amount of holiday accommodation that exists. It is disproportionately high compared to the number of residences. The problem is that many of these are located within residential areas, on the very hill where we have just built our quiet little house. There are obvious negative impacts from noisy tourists, probably unaware they are partying next door to someone’s home. They are ill-educated about the fire risks in the area and have started small fires while barbequeing, they have no responsibility towards the community, wise water-usage or the local environment. They overload the town’s infrastructure and they bring their dysfunctional selves here to unload their stress. But these concerns seem secondary to the almighty fiscal benefits that the patronising pollies throw at me. Maybe I should just roll over, lie there and give it all up for the economy. (If I were younger this might be an option for at least gaining some fiscal benefit myself)

I found a recent article on the ABCs NSW internet site that talks about this very problem in Byron Bay. The council there is struggling to balance income with infrastructure and residents’ concerns with the desires of tourists who just want to have a bloody good time at any expense. Statements like this one from the pro-tourism lobby are meant to be inflammatory and are, but maybe not in the way they were intended.

‘They talk about the fact that these….greedy rich people (have) got more than one house and if they didn't….other people could own….or rent that house…They're really attacking a fundamental right….to have a second house or even to be able to have a flexible lifestyle where they might move between two houses….’

Right? What right? I am going to sound like a communist here but having a second house is not a right, it’s a luxury. With so many people in the world without a decent roof over their heads it’s not really that complex is it? Let’s get that one straight at least.

Fantasy Drafthelp: Week 16 NFL Fantasy Advice

Here’s a few standard preface notes:

^ Notwithstanding the claims of any website to be your “home for Sunday morning injury report news,” nothing beats Google News – nothing. Entering a player name into this search engine trumps any other means of gathering information because it culls the data from an unbelievably wide variety of sources.

^ Especially earlier in the season, it’s always good to refer to a strong baseline of where players should have been drafted – and nothing beats FANTASY FOOTBALL DRAFTOLOGY 2009.

^ Unless there are any injury questions, we never discuss “gimme” players. Such core players should be started week in and week out unless there is any question surrounding their playing status. Winning teams only need to worry about “playing the matchups” with one, two or (at the most, during bye weeks) three spots in the lineup. Some websites promise you a crystal ball for how to manage high-risk, high-reward juggling during the season. We don’t. We play the percentages. That approach may be boring, but it’s highly effective and much more intellectually honest in what we promise you.

^ By the way, here are your core players who should not be benched if healthy
QB: Brady, Brees, P Manning, McNabb, Rivers, Rodgers, Romo, Warner
RB: M Barber, R Brown, Forte, Gore, Grant, S Jackson, Jacobs, C Johnson, Jones-Drew, Peterson, Portis, Slaton, Tomlinson, Turner, Westbrook, D Williams
WR: Boldin, Bowe, Colston, Fitzgerald, Jennings, A Johnson, C Johnson, Houshmandzadeh, V Jackson, Marshall, Moss, Ochocinco, S Smith (Carolina), Wayne, R White
TE: Clark, Gates, Gonzalez, Witten

^ Here are the players added to that list since the start of the year:
RB: Benson
WR: Burleson, Driver, S Smith (NY Giants)
TE: H Miller, V Davis

^ And here are the players who were on our list, but have been removed from it:
RB: Lynch
WR: Owens, R Williams

^ Links for each game take you to the CBS Sports home page for each game, with stats, analysis and even video previews.

^ All times listed are EDT.

^ Of the non-gimme players we like this week, the stronger plays are the ones in all caps.

Virgin Mary Appears in Egypt

With perfect timing for the holiday season, the Blessed Virgin has appeared again in Egypt. Video can be found here. Unlike most mothers she resembles a big blob of light.

Julio Jones Rap

One thing that I have to say about Alabama Crimson Tide fans, they are creative to say the least.

Just when thought that you saw everything an Alabama fan could post on YouTube, we got this gem about Julio Jones.

Yep, will all my white housewife rappers please stand up?

Winner of the Week: Rex Ryan

Usually on most Sunday's here at OTB, we declare our "Winner of the Week" as either someone/something or some team gains out attention for their awesomeness.

This week's winner: Rex Ryan

May I ask for a show of hands of people who thought the New York Jets would still be alive in the AFC playoff hunt? Yep, I figured that most of you already wrote them off.

However, maybe some good karma came by New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan gave out his wish-list to Santa during his weekly press conference.

It did as the Jets spoiled the Colts "Road to Perfection" as they pulled out the win by the score of 29-15. The Jets keep their playoff hopes alive with the victory as the Colts pulled Peyton Manning and most of their offensive starters in the third quarter.

You see kids it does pay off to write your wish-list to Santa. It might come true after all.

Happy Holidays from the Cincinnati Bengals

Larry Bird Vs. Magic Johnson

Larry Bird NBA Throwback #33 Boston Celtics Jersey
The rivalry began with the 1979 NCAA Championship when Magic Johnson led Michigan State past Larry Bird and Indiana State. It ended 11 years later when Magic retired. In between, fans saw the most compelling "can-you-top-this" Basketball of all time.

As NBA rookies, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird took their respective franchises and personally whipped them into shape. As veterans, they molded the very character of the league. In the first nine yars of their rivalry the two won all but a single NBA title (five for Johnson, three for Bird), and split six MVPs over 11 years. They met once in college and 37 more times in the pros, with Johnson holding a 23-15 edge. But tallying wins, losses, points, and assists doesn't tell half the story of their rivalry. Neither man played for the numbers, they played for the glory. Magic Johnson once said "People who saw our games against each other saw some of the best basketball ever played."

Virtual Bird versus Magic Time Capsule - Instant Replay

Anyone who thinks the NBA's November through April schedule is a meaningless tuneup for the playoffs never saw one of the 18 regular season confrontations between Magic Johnson's Lakers and Larry Bird's Celtics. The play of every man on the floor was elevated by the fierce competition between these two basketball giants, and even more so when their teams met in post season play.

Although Bird and Johnson rarely guarded each other, the two were nonetheless locked in their own form of mortal combat. Johnson would throw a no look pass to a teamate for a spectacular score, and Bird would respond with a fallaway three-pointer from the third row of the Boston Garden. Larry Bird would flick an impossible pass to the open man after drawing two defenders, and Magic Johnson would drive right back down the lane, faking a dish left, then right, then continuing to the basket for an uncontested layup. After each magnificent play, there would be that quick, almost imperceptible meeting of the eyes between the two superstars.

In the end, there was never a moment - on or off the court - when one of them wasn't fully aware of what the other was up to. "The first thing I would do every morning during the season," admits Bird, "was look at the box scores to see what Magic did." Thus even when geocgraphy prevented that meeting of the eyes, there was always a meeting of the minds.

Just for the Record

In the 18 regular-season matchups, Magic's Lakers beat Bird's Celtics 11 times, with the Lakers taking two of three championships from the Celtics. As for their stats - fittingly, they were a draw.

You Decide!!

Lets hear some opinions on what the readers think. Who was the better player? Who would you rather have on your team? Magic? Bird? Too close to call?

Amazing Sport Stories

Considering I have been a sports junkie for my entire life, with an entire library filled with books, and video I thought that sharing some of the greatest sports story in this blog would be a great idea. As time passes, past generations seem to fade away in time. Nearly all sport fans over 35 could at least tell you something about (Dwight Clark's) "The Catch", or Franco Harris's "The Immaculate Reception". Yet when you ask most sport fans under 30 about these historical sporting events they will just look at you with a blank stare.

I don't consider myself to be very knowledgeable about too many things in life, but my appreciation for sports history is one of my strengths. My goal is to talk about the greatest sport stories in history. Some of them may be more obscure than others, but they deserve to be remembered and have their piece in history preserved for future generations. Please feel free to email me at mastershops@yahoo.com if you have any suggestions on interesting, amazing, and hair-raising sports related stories that you fondly remember, or even ones that were passed down to you from your grandfather. Comments are welcome and encouraged. I'm hoping that this blog can be an interactive place for sport fans to talk about some of the great moments in sports history, and I soon hope to add a forum for everybody to share their favorite sport stories in history.

Xmas

Hey!

♥ pitkis, hame, wetlookit, pipo & rannekoru: H&M
♥ laukku & helmet: Seppälä
♥ Pikku Myy -heijastin: Vilulta

XD

♥ hame, helmet, rannerengas & omppurintakoru: second hand
♥ neule: äidin vanha, en kyllä aio käyttää toista kertaa, mutta oli pakko kehitellä joku valkoinen paita
♥ tonttulakki & villasukat: itse tehty
♥ vyö: äidiin vanha
♥ korvikset & Hello Kitty -pompulat: H&M

Serkuiltani Katjalta ja Riikalta saamani lahja. Kiitti tytöt. ♥

Kaveriltani Allulta saamani lahja. Kiitos sinullekin! Mm. ihanat sulkapinnit. :) Ja Edward kortissa. ;)

Lisäksi sain:
Tämän sukkaboksin..

..jo omistamaani pussilakanasettiin sopivan huovan..

+ kolmannen huovan (miten niin aina kylmissäni.. :DD), sukkia, yömekon, yöhousut, pitkiä kalsareita, joulumukin, ja 100€.
Rahan lisäksi ei siis mitään sen isompaa.
Ajattelin ruveta etsimään suoristusrautaa jolla voisi samalla tehdä ihania kiharia hiuksiin, joten rahaa menee mm. siihen.

Siis WHAT?
Suoraan vaan? Olen myös ajatellut mahdollista ruskeaa välivaihetta..
Saa kuitenkin nähdä tulevatko nämä hullut ajatukseni koskaan toteutumaan. Kunhan vain mietin kun olen kyllästynyt.

+ ihanaa lomanjatkoa kaikille lomalaisille!
