While typically bemoaning the state of the world to a ‘wise old friend’ I discovered something encouraging. Apparently it is nobody’s fault that we are in a state of degeneration. Cosmic forces have been at work. According to Hindu scripture, for the past 5,111 years the world has been in an age of ‘vice’ called the Kali Yuga, the era of the ‘male demon’. Given the dominance of the male gender, scientific rationalism and the destruction of Mother Earth, this sounds about right.
The Kali Yuga is referred to as a Dark Age because human civilisation ‘degenerates spiritually’ and morally during this particular turn of the wheel. It is associated with the apocalypse demon Kali (not to be confused with the goddess Kali, although I don’t know why not - Goddess Kali is a destructive bitch herself but she is just taking revenge I reckon) That might also explain the apocalyptic thinking that seems to dominate our era and the many apocalyptic dreams I have had.
Some believe we are now in a new phase of the cycle or that we are on the verge of starting one. Bring it on I say! According to Swami Sri Yukteswar ‘we are in recent transition from the lowest material age, the Kali Yuga, into the electrical or atomic age, the Dwapara Yuga’.
In this era we ‘begin to see the world as more transparent as we move from an awareness of self as a physical body in a strictly physical universe, to an awareness that we are something more’. Given my own journey on the planet and my thesis, that sounds about right too.
I will keep looking into this, but for now, I am happy to be deluded that things will change.
