Naya Rivera & Douglas Booth's Post-SAG Party Night

Sparking rumors of a new budding romance, Naya Rivera was spotted alongside Douglas Booth at the SAG afterparty at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles on Sunday night (January 30).

The "Glee" actress walked next to the Burberry model as the pair made their way to valet - with Booth kindly lending his jacket to Rivera so that she could keep herself warm in the chilly late night weather.

The outing followed an evening on the red carpet for Naya, who attended the Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Shrine Exposition Center with her "Glee" co-stars.

Unfortunately, Miss Rivera and the gang ended up losing out to "Modern Family" in the Outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series category.

News has been filtering out of Egypt over the past few days that internet access in the country has been extremely limited. Computerworld reported today; “Egypt is now off the grid.” They write, “Four days after the Egyptian government ordered Internet service providers to disconnect from the Internet, the country’s last working Internet company has abruptly vanished from cyberspace.”

Here in the U.S., there’s a piece of legislation on the table, drafted by Senators Joe Lieberman and Susan Collins, that would offer President Obama a “kill switch,” effectively allowing him to shut down the Internet during a national emergency. Brandon Milhorn, counsel for the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, says, ”We’re not trying to mandate any requirements for the entire Internet, the entire Internet backbone… (just the) crucial components that form our nation’s critical infrastructure.”

So a shocking prospect if a national emergency was ever to arise but according to reports it wouldn't include social network platforms such as Twitter or Facebook.

Ronald Isley, Anita Baker Honored At Soul Train Awards

Only at the Soul Train Awards could you have a tribute to R&B icons such as Anita Baker and Ronald Isley alongside a segment in which rap legend Doug E. Fresh attempts to teach CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer how to do the Dougie.

It was that kind of night at the 2010 Soul Train Awards, as rookies, veterans and legends came together in Atlanta for the second annual event — which was taped November 10 and aired Sunday night on BET. The show, hosted once again by Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, featured a night of performances from some of the biggest names in soul and R&B.

Host Howard told MTV News that the show is meant to be an extension of the long-running and legendary '70s TV series that brought soul, disco, R&B and rap stars into viewers' living rooms. "It reminds me of the advancement black people have made over the years because 'Soul Train' really was the beginning of that Black Power movement when we could actually see ourselves — and to have an awards show based upon that 'Soul Train' — it's headed somewhere," Howard said. "We have a black president now. The country seems to be more tolerant towards the diversity inside of it so it seems like the train is moving well down the tracks."

The awards show marked the 40th anniversary of the classic music showcase hosted by Don Cornelius, and celebrated the careers of Baker and Isley, while handing out trophies to such contemporary stars as B.o.B (Song of the Year for "Nothing on You"), Melanie Fiona (Best New Artist), Eminem and Rihanna (Best Hip-Hop Song of the Year for "Love the Way You Lie"), Usher (Album of the Year for Raymond vs. Raymond) and Alicia Keys (Record of the Year for "Unthinkable [I'm Ready]" and Best Female R&B Soul Artist).

Though top winners such as Trey Songz, Usher, Ciara, Eminem and Rihanna were not in the house, Blitzer graciously agreed to accept Slim Shady's award for him, joking, "Who better to accept this award on behalf of Eminem ... I know he's thrilled."

Weaving through a series of skits involving magic tricks and jovial bickering by the hosts, the performance-heavy program delivered on talent. R. Kelly opened by teasing the crowd with his classic "Bump n' Grind," then diving into his new single "When a Woman Loves" — transforming the song from a slow jam into an all-out '50s rock-and-roll epic. Ne-Yo kept the show moving with a showcase of his singles from this year, including "Champagne Life" and "One in a Million."

The tribute to Baker featured an all-star cast, with artists like Chrisette Michele, Goapele, Lalah Hathaway, Dionne Farris, Kem, Tamia, Faith Evans and El DeBarge covering a medley of the singer's greatest hits. Baker told the crowd that the biggest honor of the night for her was that real musicians were performing live with an actual band. "It's amazing because you've got children behind you singing 'Rapture' — it's lovely," she said, adding, "Let's do it again!"

Ronald Isley, co-founder and lead singer of the Isley Brothers, also received a special homage that featured Jeffrey Osborne, Freddy Jackson, DeBarge, Tank, Eric Benet, Bilal and Peabo Bryson. Isley also came out to perform his own medley of hits and was joined onstage by Chanté Moore and R. Kelly for a rendition of "Contagious," their 2002 single that featured the Isleys. In addition, Cee Lo Green closed the show with a duet on the Isleys' classic 1959 hit, "Shout."

Among the event's other highlights was Cee Lo's performance of his smash "Forget You," which took place on a golden stage that resembled a cross between Kanye's Egyptian fusion and an OK Go video, and found the singer gliding down conveyor belts while belting his number.

Erykah Badu delivered a stripped-down version of her 2010 breakout "Window Seat" that featured the singer perched on the floor over a web of lights while appearing to orchestrate the vibrations of light flickers with her hands.

Soul singer Eric Benet performed "Sometimes a Cry" — a song that Lil Wayne cited as one of his favorites while in prison — bringing down the house with a soaring falsetto that bested his studio rendition of the track.

The evening's other performers included Bruno Mars, who sang his new hit "Grenade," and Jazmine Sullivan, who did a medley of "10 Seconds" and "Holding You Down (Goin' in Circles)."

Michael Jackson Doctor Conrad Murray Didn't Seem To Know CPR, Bodyguard Testifies

Jackson's two oldest children were in bedroom witnessing drama, bodyguard Faheem Muhammed said.

One of the most shocking revelations to emerge from the first day of testimony in the pretrial hearing of former Michael Jackson doctor Conrad Murray is that as the pop icon lay dying in his rented Los Angeles mansion, cardiologist Murray asked in a panic, "Does anyone know CPR?"

According to CNN, that's what bodyguard Faheem Muhammed said on the stand. Tuesday was the first day of testimony in hearings aimed at determining whether there is enough evidence to try Murray on a felony count of involuntary manslaughter in the June 2009 death of the King of Pop.

The hearing is slated to last around two weeks and feature 20 to 30 witnesses, most of whom will be medical professionals. But it was the shocking testimony of Muhammed on Tuesday that grabbed headlines. He said that he and fellow guard Alberto Alvarez walked in on a scene in which Murray was crouched next to the motionless body of Jackson and it appeared that the heart surgeon did not know how to give CPR.

As they waited for paramedics to arrive, Muhammed said Murray stood next to Jackson's bed and asked in a panicked voice if anyone else in the room knew how to administer the life-saving technique.

"I looked at Alberto because we knew Dr. Murray was a heart surgeon, so we were shocked," Muhammed said. When defense attorney Ed Chernoff asked whether Murray was asking for help because he was exhausted after staying up all night administering sleep aids to the chronically insomniac Jackson, Muhammed replied, "The way that he asked it is as if he didn't know CPR." He also said that he never witnessed Murray performing CPR on Jackson before paramedics arrived and that the singer's two oldest children, Prince Michael and Paris, were in their father's bedroom as the drama was unfolding. Among the Jackson family members in court on Tuesday to watch the proceedings were family matriarch Katherine, sister LaToya and brothers Randy and Jackie.

Prosecutor David Walgren referred to Murray's use of "ineffectual" CPR, which included using one hand while Jackson was on a soft bed, which is counter to recommended techniques. Walgren also told the judge in the case that medical experts would testify that Murray took "a number of actions" that "showed an extreme deviation from the standard of care," after being hired to serve as Jackson's personal physician in the lead-up to a series of comeback shows in England.

The prosecutor also claimed that Murray waited at least 21 minutes to call an ambulance after he found Jackson unresponsive. "By all accounts, Michael Jackson was dead in the bedroom at 100 North Carolwood prior to the paramedics' arrival," Walgren said. The Los Angeles County coroner later determined that the singer died of "acute propofol intoxication," saying the overdose of the surgical anesthetic and the combined effects of other sedatives caused his death.

Chernoff has said that Murray administered propofol and other sedatives to Jackson in the hours before the pop star's death, but not in quantities that "should have" caused his death. CNN reported that Murray's defense team hinted that it would argue that Jackson was facing intense pressure over his upcoming 50-date This Is It comeback series of shows at London's O2 Arena and that led to his demands for treatment to help his chronic insomnia.

Also testifying on Tuesday was the director of the shows, Kenny Ortega, who described Jackson as "involved, active, participating" at his final rehearsal, which ended 12 hours before his death. That was very different from the out-of-it singer who could barely make it through rehearsals on June 19, six nights before his death. At a meeting called after Ortega sent Jackson home that night for some rest, the director described a scene in which Murray scolded him for cutting the rehearsal short.

"Dr. Murray told me that this was not my responsibility, and he asked me not to act like a doctor or psychologist," Ortega said. Murray has pleaded not guilty in the case, and according to a recent report, Walgren believes that the doctor's lawyers may claim that Jackson self-administered the final, fatal dose of propofol and essentially killed himself after waking up in a panic from a fitful night of sleep.

Testimony in the case will continue on Wednesday (January 5).

With tag lines like "My World Includes Passion for Animals, Yours Should Too" and "Animals Can Make U Smile, Adopt From Your Local Shelter," Justin Bieber has joined forces with PETA as the latest celebrity spokesperson for the animal-rights organization.

The pop singer and a papillon pup named Bijou posed for the ads, asking fans to adopt animals from a shelter. Bieber also shot a video for the campaign that has been posted online. In the clip, he says, "A lot of animals are getting abused in different homes ... and I think it's really important we just stay aware about these different situations."

Bieber goes on to recalls his own experiences with animal shelters. "I have a dog, his name is Sam. He's actually a papillon," the teen star explained. "We moved to a city where we didn't really know anybody, so I wanted a friend and Sam was kind of like that friend.

"My dad and I used to just go visit the different animals and stuff," he continued, while suggesting that people get involved with the campaign. "It's really important that people adopt. I really encourage going out to an animal shelter or a place where you can get a dog that has been abandoned or doesn't have a home."

In his punny photo ads for the organization, the pop sensation sports his signature bangs and hoodie. The pics were shot by Cliff Watts, who has photographed other stars such as Kate Hudson, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Beyoncé and Angelina Jolie in the past.

Bieber joins a long line of celebrities who have posed, many often nude, for PETA campaigns. Khloé Kardashian, Pamela Anderson, Paul McCartney, Eva Mendes, Pink and Mark Ronson, to name a few, have been featured in previous PETA ads.

The Oscar race is hotting up as the SAG awards displayed last night that this year there are no out and out clear winners in each category. The SAG awards was a more standard, calm affair than the Golden Globes. No Ricky Gervais, Risque jokes, outrageous dresses etc and alongside that there were no real surprises.

One small-ish exception being Natalie Portman snagging the SAG for Best Actress. We're betting that Hollywood royalty Annette Bening, nominated for her fourth Oscar (still no wins!) is feeling pretty nervous right now. Most people had her slated to win the SAG, and Portman is her only serious contender for the Oscar. Last night they were up against each other for the first major award -- and Portman won. With this sort of momentum, we're feeling more and more confident that Natalie Portman will end up taking home the Oscar.

So a proud night for the winners of the awards and after last night's proceedings, the oscars are now even more anticipated.

St. John's Red Storm Bedevil #3 Duke at Madison Square Garden

Facing their eighth consecutive ranked opponent in a four-week span, the St. John’s Red Storm men’s basketball team (12-8) dug deep to pull out their finest showing of the season.

In front of a sellout crowd of 19,353 at Madison Square Garden Sunday afternoon, the resurgence of the St. John’s basketball program continued with a stunning 93-78 upset of the No. 3 Duke Blue Devils (19-2).

Buoyed by a stifling defense that limited the Blue Devils to 29.6 percent shooting (8-of-27) and forced the ACC powerhouse into committing 11 turnovers, the Red Storm took early control of the game as they proceeded to jump out to a 46-25 lead after the first 20 minutes of action.

St. John’s shot a blistering 57.1 percent (16-of-28) from the field in the first half and buried 60 percent (3-of-5) of their three-point shots—exactly the type of start the Red Storm needed to score their third upset of a ranked opponent this year.

The Blue Devils played more to character in the second half, shooting 51.4 percent from the floor and scoring more than twice as many points as they did in the first.

But St. John’s was equal to the task as they shot an even better percentage from the field (59.3 percent) and nailed clutch free throws to consistently keep Duke at bay.

"I thought our team from the outset executed with precision on offense and brought great intensity to the defensive end of the floor," Red Storm first-year head coach Steve Lavin said.

"We were able to maintain a high level of basketball for 40 minutes and that was the difference."

Senior guard Dwight Hardy led five Red Storm players in double figures with 26 points, including senior forward Justin Brownlee, who posted 20 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

Nolan Smith’s 32 points and Kyle Singler’s 20 points paced the Blue Devil contingent, who had no other player score more than seven points in the game.

"It's not an Xs and Os thing today," Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

"I felt we were not ready to compete, we had blank expressions on our faces and guys weren't talking and that's my responsibility. Our program didn't do well today and that is all our responsibilities."

The loss snapped Duke’s string of 20 consecutive victories over non-conference opponents.

With 11 games left in the regular season, including nine games in the Big East and three against ranked opponents, the Red Storm have a long and difficult road ahead if qualifying for their first NCAA Tournament since 2002 is to come to fruition.

However, quality victories over No. 15 Notre Dame, No. 21 Georgetown and most importantly, No. 3 Duke, along with owning the No. 2 strength of schedule in the country, will hold tremendous weight with the Selection Committee if St. John’s ends the season on the bubble.

Nevertheless, as one of the top five recruiting classes prepares to make its way to Queens, it’s safe to say that St. John’s basketball is back with a flourish.

Kim Kardashian's fury was exposed bare on Sunday's "Kourtney and Kim Take New York" episode when she saw a glimpse of her now-controversial nude November 2010 photo spread for W Magazine. She assumed her body would be "obscured" by silver paint and words but not much else.

"Even though I agreed to pose nude, I will be fully covered in artwork," Kim said. But it turned out Mark Seliger's arty photographs were left as they were, making Kim appear more naked in W than in her Playboy spread, she claimed. "This is just absurd," she said tearfully (pictured left with kourtney on the left). "This is serious porn!" The 30-year-old reality star explained to sisters Kourtney and Khloe that she was crying because she felt "so taking advantage of."

So an unhappy mishap by the reality TV star who is deeply aggrieved by the nature of the photoshoot as she thought it was going to be much less blue.

Usher, Ke$ha And More Help Dance Music Go Pop In 2010

But is it here to stay? Our music-industry experts weigh in.
By Akshay Bhansali

In 2010, pop princesses, R&B icons and chart-dominating newcomers all danced to the same beat. Not only did dance music go pop, but pop music caught the club-music bug.

Between Katy Perry's "Firework," Ke$ha's "We R Who We R," Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)," Enrique Iglesias' "I Like It," Usher's "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love" and "OMG" and countless other singles, established artists definitely looked to dance beats for surefire hits. And two of this year's biggest success stories in music were Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz; could there be a soul left in this country who hasn't heard "Dynamite" or "In My Head"?

The love went both ways, with dance music's biggest stars finding mainstream success this year. Dance-music maestro deadmau5 took up house-artist duties at this year's VMAs, and Swedish House Mafia and Usher teamed up for a medley of their gems at the American Music Awards.

So how did this happen? We caught up with some music-industry experts to get their takes.

"You definitely saw tempos go up this year," Jon Caramanica of The New York Times told MTV News. "And I think what you had are a lot of producers who are really familiar with nightclub stuff. They are familiar with Europe. Things are happening on a more global scale now."

"I think everything from Europe, and sometimes even Asia, it comes to America, and we just adopt things a little bit slower," said Jared Eng of JustJared.com. "I think it was just a change. People like different types of music at different times. And dance was of this moment."

Noah Callahan of Complex magazine added: "I think 2010 saw the merging of the pop and dance genres. Pop artists realized that there were best practices that could be borrowed from dance music. And, ultimately, [all] pop music that has been made in the past 20 years had ended up being remixed for the club by dance artists. I think they basically just cut out the middleman and went straight there."

Dance music being introduced into the hip-hop and R&B realms was particularly notable this year.

"I think David Guetta kind of at the end of last year and the beginning of this year spearheaded it," said freelance writer Julianne Escobedo Shepherd. "He produced a lot of tracks. I think as trends go, people revile 'unst-unst.' But it's just coming back around. Big-room techno was a way for people to get decadent in a year that no one could get decadent."

"You have someone like will.i.am, who's like, 'Well, I spent all this time in Ibiza, and this is what they are doing,' and he wants to find a way to bring that into his music," Caramanica said of the Black Eyed Peas mastermind. "R&B especially became dance music. And especially with your Jason Derülos, Taio Cruzes. Guys like that would have literally been blocked at the border two years ago. That would not have made it through customs. And now all of a sudden they have #1 songs. I think will.i.am had a lot to do with that last year."

Elliott Wilson of RapRadar.com added: "It's actually even affected hip-hop. I was talking to Q-Tip, and his next record, I feel like that's gonna kind of go in that vein. I know that was also Jay-Z's thought process with Blueprint 3 at first, that he wanted to make a little bit more of a world music [vibe], a little more dancey. I think the kids today want to go to the clubs. They wanna have a good time. They wanna dance. So I think the artists of today are trying to kind of feed that audience."

"I think it's caught on this year because the people who've done it have been successful," offered Clover Hope of Vibe magazine. "Like 'OMG,' with usher, he didn't have success until he made a dance record. He had 'There Goes My Baby' and these really, like, adult-contemporary records that didn't really catch on. And then once you see that everybody is doing it and that people are liking it, they are like, 'OK, let me just try this out.' It's like Auto-Tune. Like, 'Let me see what I sound like on a record by David Guetta.' They end up liking it and doing more of it."

So does the club-music trend have staying power. According to our tastemakers, not so much.

"I do think it's a blip," Caramanica said. "I don't think that's gonna be something that lasts in America. I think this is gonna be a moment we'll all look back on and go, 'Wasn't that weird when Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz had #1 records?"

"At some point, these R&B artists will get kind of sick of it and be like, 'Let me go back to my soul background,' " Hope said. "When you actually have to say something, dance doesn't really lend itself to substance. And I think that R&B artists, they really want to talk about love and in a deep way, and to do that, you need to do, like, a soul or a traditional R&B record. I want to say that it's kind of a fad."

"I think music is very cyclical," Eng offered. "So I think dance music might be here for a little bit, but I'm sure it will phase out at some point."

Wilson called dance music "the sound of today. I think that people want more aggressive, faster beats, and I think that that probably has legs until at least next summer."

What do you think? Is dance music here to stay? Let us know in the comments!

Beyonce To Star In Clint Eastwood's 'A Star Is Born' Remake

Movie will be directed and produced by the Oscar winner.

Beyoncé Knowles is headed back to the big screen and into the familiar territory of playing an aspiring singer-turned-superstar. According to Deadline, Knowles will star in a remake of "A Star Is Born," to be directed and produced by Oscar winner Clint Eastwood for Warner Bros.

The remake will be the fourth telling of the "A Star Is Born" tale, the most memorable in recent years being the 1976 version with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson as star-crossed lovers of sorts. It is also worth mentioning that the producers of that film, Billy Gerber and Jon Peters, are also attached to this new project. It is said to be a full-on musical with production set to begin sometime in the fall.

Naturally, the plot details are under wraps, but the original story revolves around an aspiring singer who meets and falls in love with a troubled, failing former star who helps get the young ingénue her big break in the business.

No announcements have been made with regard to the male lead, but the report mentioned that major names like Will Smith, Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Hamm have been floated around.

It's definitely an interesting step for Knowles but not necessarily a surprise, given the fact that the majority of her film roles have been as singers ("Cadillac Records," "Dreamgirls," "The Fighting Temptations"). While many thought "Dreamgirls" would bring awards recognition for Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson's supporting role ended up garnering the most attention. With Oscar fave Eastwood at the helm of this new project, Knowles could be in line for some hardware yet.

Updating My Life

I know I haven't quite gotten back into the swing of posting regularly, but I realized it's been quite a while since I actually have done an update post.  So, here goes:

Our holidays were good.  I found as it got closer and closer to Christmas, I was over-extending myself.  So, I decided to back off.  And what a relief it was to do so!  I learned a great and valuable lesson:  Just because I WANT to do it all, I don't HAVE to do it all.  And the best part was, NO ONE knew that I didn't get everything done for Christmas that I had planned.  Wow--all of those years I ran myself into the ground and practically had a nervous breakdown every December and for what?

**********

January and February this year means that I am getting a whole lot of yearly medical stuff out of the way.  I have already had my appointment with my internist--which turned out fine, I guess*--and last week I saw the ophthalmologist.  It has been almost three years since I had my LASIK and he has declared me a complete success.  Everything is pretty stable and he is happy with the results.  That being said, I DO have some residual astigmatism--which I guess isn't surprising, considering how bad it WAS--and he found evidence that cataracts are beginning to form.  Great.  And the worst part is that I can't do anything to stop this and I won't be able to tell how bad things are getting because the sight deteriorates so gradually.  What I have to do is see him every two years and keep track of the progress.  Another joyful part of getting older.

**********

I got my report from the ultrasound of my carotid arteries and THAT was good news.  There is no evidence that anything is getting worse in my neck, which is a relief.  Now, I don't know if there is anything I can do to make things better--unless they go in and do surgery--the sludge that is there is staying.  And there is no way they would do surgery on me because the problem is so very slight.  It has been two years since the last ultrasound and I haven't exactly done much to keep things from getting any worse, so this was very welcome news.

**********

I won't get my mammograms done until the end of February.  This is because of when I had them done last year.  Insurance companies will only allow these once a year--unless there is a problem, of course--so I have to wait the 'one year plus one day' and have them done later than I wanted.  Sometimes things are just too complicated.  I'm just happy that the hospital caught this in time--I don't want to have to pay for something that we have covered by insurance.

**********

This week I get to go and have my teeth scraped--and hope that no other work needs to be done.  Just thinking about it causes a panic attack!  But, with the amount of time I spend daily with cleaning my teeth, things should be okay for a while yet.  I hope.
**********

A week from now I will be getting things ready for our road trip to see 'Wicked.'  We decided to spend two nights away--we will leave here on Monday afternoon, see the play on Tuesday, and come home on Wednesday.  Of course, the rest of the time will be spent in the stores--this will give me plenty of time to go to places I don't normally get to visit.  I've got my lists going already, so I am hoping the shopping will go in my favor.

**********

As I said, there were a few things that I didn't get done in time for Christmas.  But that just means I have to do them now.  The sewing/crafts room is filling up with projects that I need to get started on or complete.  Right now I have a scarf that I started, two hats that I'm making, a bunch of fleece blankets, and fleece polar socks.  I have no problem making the stuff--and I actually enjoy the work--but I find that I HATE the preparation and the finishing work.  I have to get going, because most of the stuff isn't for me and it has been promised to others--and I believe the patience is wearing a bit thin when it comes to people not getting what they are expecting.

**********
We took a ride up north last week to deliver some stuff to The Oldest and her family.  This was the first time I've been up there in quite a few months.  So many times when K goes up there, I stay at home--I enjoy the time alone to get things done without him being here. I need to go more often, however, because I do miss the grandkids.  Anyway, the roads were normal for here in the winter:  snow-covered and a bit slippery.  As for the weather around here, we have snow almost every day--but that is normal, too.  :)  Haven't had too many bad storms this winter--but at least one will be coming yet this year.

**********
So far it seems as if we have been waiting for three months for the damned Super Bowl to finally be played.  Of course, with living here, the hype is on about the Packers, so I have it worse than people in other parts of the country.  I'll just be happy when the entire thing is done.
With hockey, the All-Star weekend just finished up and the regular schedule will be back on Tuesday.  I haven't seen a Wings game since Wednesday and won't get to see the next one until Wednesday.  I AM suffering from withdrawal symptoms.  ;)  Oh well, the race to the playoffs is about to begin.  Fun times.

*I still am not sure how I feel about the new doctor.  Some people think I should go out and look for someone who I may feel more comfortable with, while others tell me to give it some time.  I have a lot of thinking to do about this.

After being away for a season, the NFL Pro Bowl returned to Honolulu, Hawaii and a couple fans decided near the end of the game to get their fifteen seconds of fame.

Nearing the end of the 4th quarter, two fans made a beeline for the field and made it, they were promptly tackled by police officers.

Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle Darnell Dockett enjoyed the festivities:

Box Office Showdown: 'The Rite' Vs. 'No Strings Attached'

Fantasy Drafthelp: Why Tulow is Two

In last week’s edition of our fantasy newsletter, we unveiled our early Top 100 for the 2011 fantasy baseball season. It was unusual in one key regard; more about that below. Many of our draft boards end up being controversial in one way or another, particularly in the placement of players at the very top. In that regard, our 2010 football draft board was actually the exception to the rule in that it had a top five (CJ/Peterson/Rice/MJD/Gore) that was not much different from most others in the industry.

When we differ from many other sources, it’s not because we’re setting out to do so deliberately. Such contrivance is ineffective on the whole. Our approach is simply, to process the available information through the prism of our “value drafting” approach and go wherever that path takes us.

In examining the top of our board, it’s clear where the major point of contention for most fantasy owners would lie. Not only do we buck this year’s pervasive trend of putting Albert Pujols at #1, we’ve bumped him to #3 to make room for Troy Tulowitzki directly after our leader, Hanley Ramirez. Now, we’ve placed Hanley at the top for the past few years, so that’s not a huge surprise. But Tulow at two? Consider his placement on some other leading industry draft boards this year: 4, 4, 5, 6 and 11. Incidentally, while we don’t generally reveal which institutions place which players where, we are making an exception to note that one of the #4 rankings for Tulow came from Matt Berry at ESPN. Inasmuch as Berry has mistaken our past criticism of him for a personal jihad, we do try to point out where we agree with him as well as where we violently disagree – so we give him credit to being relatively close to our position while still not getting there altogether.

There are several valid aspects to why we placed Tulow where we did and why the fact that our brethren have not fallen into line is, frankly, irrelevant:

^ The first and foremost point we would make in our defense is that the shortstop position is historically weak this year in fantasy. As always, power is the key separator at the position – all the more so in this “post-steroid” era – and there are no reliable mashers aside from Hanley and Tulow. You have to go back to the time before the ARod/Nomah/Jeter emergence in the mid-‘90s to find a time when the crop was this fallow.

^ Speaking of how thin the position is, consider this: he has been criticized for periods of injury (2008, 2010) or ineffectiveness (2009). But after the first two months of 2009, he had huge numbers (.326, 27 HR, 76 RBI, 80 R, 16 SB) that look even more eyeball-popping when extrapolated over the whole season (.326, 40 HR, 114 RBI, 120 R, 24 SB). Now take a look at the numbers of his legendary two month-stretch at the end of 2010: .335, 18 HR, 56 RBI, 40 R, 4 SB. Extrapolate those over the course of the full season and you’re looking at the following: .335, 54 HR, 168 RBI, 120 R, 12 SB. For two years in a row, over a prolonged period of play, he has been the best hitter in baseball – again, at a time of absolutely historic power shortage at his position.

^ Last year, we had TT ninth on our board when our peers had him generally slotted from about 15th to 18th. Now look at where they’ve put him this year. Advantage, FDH. So if we were right about him then, that lends credence to the thought that we are right again this year.

^ Tulowitzki is 26 years old this year and his upward trend shows that he is in line to keep progressing – and is just one year shy of the “Magic 27” campaign when hitters really come into their own. So decades of science indicate that we haven’t seen the best of him by a longshot.

^ He forms, along with fellow first-round Rockie luminary Carlos Gonzalez, the best 1-2 punch in baseball at this moment.

^ You would worry about many other players getting the security of a long-term contract – but not Troy. He’s no Shawn Kemp, that’s for sure. His intensity is notable in a profession littered with “red-ass” players, so nothing at all should flag in that regard. He knows how great he has a chance to be and he wants to fully live up to the vast potential.

You can tell from the points made here that our reasoning is multi-pronged, and although we have enumerated just how much we consider Tulow to be a special talent at just the right point of his career ascent, our biggest issue comes back to positional scarcity. If you own Hanley or Tulow, you possess an asset in a reliable power-hitting shortstop that only one other team in your league also has. To extrapolate on this a bit further, in AL-only leagues this year, you shouldn’t draft or bid high on ANY shortstop inasmuch as there is no real point of separation in the field between the top players. But in mixed leagues, you can’t go wrong with either of the shortstops from the teams added to MLB in the 1993 expansion.

Nicki Minaj's 'Moment 4 Life' Video: An Acting Coach Weighs In

An acting coach weighs in on the MC's flair for the dramatic.

Nicki Minaj is one of the hottest MCs in the game, but in her "Moment 4 Life" video, the singer also shows off her acting abilities, playing her fairy godmother, Martha, and a Roman-inspired, Cinderella-like version of herself. The New York native does have a background in drama, having attended New York's famous LaGuardia High School, and now it seems she's putting some of that training to good use.

So how do her skills rate? "I think she has a great personality that comes through; very vibrant. I love her energy. I love her rapping ability," said Roger Del Pozo, assistant director of admissions at New York Film Academy, who helps handle acting auditions for the school. "As an actress, probably not that subtle, but I don't think that subtlety is going to be her strong point anyways."

Nicki may be a skilled MC, sharpening her acting chops, and Del Pozo offered her some advice: "She should probably be trying to be a little more natural, a little more realistic; it's a little over-the-top," he said. "I'd like to see her a little more subtle, trusting the camera a little bit more."

Of the two characters she plays in the clip, Del Pozo has a favorite: "I think I like the Nicki Minaj character, 'cause she's cuter and you see her natural energy come through a little more," he said. "I think she's funny and she's very expressive. With the right material, she would do a good job. Her straight acting ability, I'd probably give her a 6, and as a just a performer in general, I'd probably give her a 9 or a 10."

In an exclusive interview following the premiere of "Moment 4 Life," Nicki called acting her "favorite part of the video" and explained why Roman is her favorite character to play. "I think I started liking Roman more because everybody else liked Roman," she said. "Everybody wanted to see what outlandish thing he would say next. And I think people are expecting him to do something real crazy on the next album, so I'm having fun prepping him for the sophomore album."

How would you rate Nicki's acting abilities? Let us know in the comments!

Nicki Minaj Gets 'Creepy' And Shows Booty Power On 'Saturday Night Live'

If fans were expecting hip-hop sexpot Nicki Minaj to vamp it up in her first "Saturday Night Live" skit, they definitely got an unexpected eyeful of the rap diva being, well, super creepy.

Minaj popped up in an Andy Samberg-helmed digital short, dressed as a socially awkward, throwback nerd -- big glasses, blonde ponytail and cardigan -- for the ode of voyeurism "Do the Creep."

Legendary filmmaker and kitsch enthusiast John Waters introduced the song via an old-school television screen, and Samberg, sporting a snug suit, spectacles and skinny mustache reminiscent of Waters' signature facial fuzz, led a trio of similarly dressed crooners. The crew celebrated inappropriate peeping moments, belting, "When a fine PYT walks in front of your tree, do the creep," and crooned about watching their parents get it on.

Nicki showed up midway through the jam in her dork garb and spit about watching guys in a locker room take it all off, rhyming that while she was "ogling ... little did they know that they were modeling." Nicki later showed off a penchant for necrophilia by trying to make out with a corpse at a funeral, and then instructed viewers on how to do properly "creep," singing, "Get your knees flexing and your arms t-rexing."

Minaj did show off her voluptuous side when she popped up in a fake blaxpoitation flick, "Bride of Blackenstein," alongside Jay Pharoah as an evil scientist, Kenan Thompson as Frankenstein and host Jesse Eisenberg as the hunchbacked assistant. When the doctor unveiled his creation, she captivated the fellas with her rotund behind, as Eisenberg quipped "That's why you had me fill those basketballs with Jell-O!" But she quickly made it clear that she has an attitude to match her assets, batting away Frankenstein's advances with "You think you can just walk up on me and get some of this?" After she officially staked her claim to the castle and insisted her new man stay at home, the townspeople stormed the dungeon but were quickly diverted by a wiggle of Minaj's mega-booty.

When Minaj recently spoke to MTV News about her "SNL" appearance, the native New Yorker admitted she was amped to appear on the iconic sketch show.

"Being a part of 'Saturday Night Live' feels absolutely incredible. I still don't even believe it's true, I'm not even going to believe it's really happening until — well, I'm going to DVR it, because I can't watch it, because I'll be on it," she said. "But until I see it back on DVR, I'm not even going to believe I was really on the show. This is epic, this is monumental, this is historic stuff."

What did you think of Nicki Minaj's "SNL" sketches? Let us know in the comments!

New York Mets Agree to Terms with R.A. Dickey on Two-Year Deal

When a baseball franchise signs a 36-year-old pitcher who has a career record of 33-37 with a 4.70 ERA, it usually doesn’t qualify as making noise in the offseason. But, relatively speaking, this is the second-biggest splash the New York Mets have made since the end of last season.

According to a source privy to the negotiations, the Mets avoided salary arbitration with right-handed knuckleball specialist R.A. Dickey by agreeing to terms on a two-year deal with a club option for a third year. The deal is pending a physical scheduled for Monday.

Dickey, an eight-year MLB veteran, filed an arbitration request to earn $4.7 million during the 2011 season, with the organization countering at $3.35 million, prior to coming to terms.

After being called up from Triple-A Buffalo nearly two months into the 2010 season, Dickey went on to have the best season of his career, posting highs in wins (11), ERA (2.84), strikeouts (104), starts (26), complete games (two), innings pitched (174.1), opponents’ batting average (.251) and WHIP (1.19).

In addition, among Mets starters, Dickey finished first in ERA, tied for second in wins (Johan Santana), and second in quality starts (19).

So, in a brutal New York winter, where the Mets have made non-descriptive transactions such as the signings of catcher Ronny Paulino, second baseman Russ Adams, left fielder Scott Hairston, and pitcher Boof Bonser, Dickey’s return to the starting rotation is one of the team’s best offseason moves to date.

Thus far, the Mets’ top move was agreeing to terms with Mike Pelfrey, the team’s best starting pitcher last season, to a one-year, $3.925 million contract to circumvent the arbitration process.

Oscar Nominee James Franco Set To Direct 'As I Lay Dying'

The '127 Hours' star and Oscar host tells MTV News he'll helm movie based on William Faulkner's novel this summer.

James Franco may very well be Hollywood's ultimate Renaissance man. In addition to his already busy 2011 schedule, which includes attending the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, both as first-time host and Best Actor nominee (for "127 Hours"), the actor/writer/student will also tackle directing duties.

Over the weekend, MTV News managed to catch a minute with Franco at the Sundance Film Festival, where he revealed to us yet another impressive future endeavor. The star spilled, "This summer I'm going to direct a movie based on William Faulkner's novel 'As I Lay Dying.' "

Franco, who has in the past done some work behind the camera, explained, "I shoot a test of the whole movie before I make a movie. So we just shot a test."

Despite working from a lengthy script (160 pages, to be exact), Franco did an entire pre-shoot with actors in North Carolina on New Year's Day. And in keeping with his already unorthodox methods, the 32-year-old noted that the actors he used for the test filming won't necessarily be the ones he works with on the final product.

While Franco says he "might" appear in his adaptation of "As I Lay Dying," he has his sights set on his favorite actor, "Boardwalk Empire" and "Revolutionary Road" star Michael Shannon, whom he has worked with twice before. The cast already includes Paul Dano ("Little Miss Sunshine," "There Will Be Blood") and, if all works out for Franco, Richard Jenkins ("The Visitor," "Six Feet Under") and Joaquin Phoenix will be onboard as well.

Miley Cyrus 'Excited' For Fans To See 'So Undercover'

'I've had an awesome time shooting this movie,' actress/singer says in video message to fans.

Considering she spent years playing a girl who led two lives on "Hannah Montana," Miley Cyrus' upcoming role as an FBI agent who goes "So Undercover" at a college sorority should be an easy transition. Miley recently took to YouTube to update fans on all the fun she had shooting the comedy/action flick. She even spilled the beans on a special actor who joined the movie's "entourage" for a cameo.

" 'Sup guys? It's Miley in my trailer hanging out on the set of 'So Undercover,' " she told fans in the video. "This is actually our last week and a half, which is crazy."

So, what sort of antics have Miley and the cast, including Kelly Osbourne, been up to on the set? "I can't believe how quick it's gone," she said. "We had a really good time. We actually just had a wrap party because the girls are leaving 'cause now it's getting into the relationship of me and my dad. So all the sorority scenes are coming to an end, so all my girls are leaving me.

"We've been working so hard," she continued. "Literally, I'm in every scene except one or two, so we've been here working really long hours. It was nice to have a night just to be able to hang out, all the crew and all the cast, to be able to hang out as friends, not in just a work environment."

That cast includes Jeremy Piven, who apparently has a secret part in the flick. "They let me and Jeremy Piven, who plays one of our characters ... can't tell you who, I'm not allowed. But Jeremy's in this movie, and so he got up on the drums and we played 'I Love Rock 'n' Roll.' "

Bottom line, although the film has been a lot of hard work, Miley thinks it's all been worth it. "I've had an awesome time shooting this movie," she said. "I'm excited for you guys to see it, really digging it. I wanted to tell you guys I love you ... peace."

Kevin Nash

Kevin Nash

The 2011 WWE wrestling Royal Rumble is preparing to be spiced up tonight as Dave Meltzer reports that Kevin Nash and Booker T will be in the Wrestling event and likely mystery entrants. With them signing up to WWE it means that TNA Wrestlings schedule to include them in their roster will be killed off.

The former WWE champions were scheduled to return to TNA on Monday as part of the “They” angle that has been building on TNA Impact. Nash and T were scheduled to reunite the Main Event Mafia with Kurt Angle and Sting and defend TNA’s honor. There is nothing coincidental about the signing of two key players a few days before the start of a major angle in TNA and this is nothing more than reminder that if you want to play with the big boys, you better have all of your guys under contract before you count on them for an angle.

So as always with the royal rumble every year there are faces from the past that will be appearing. This time Nash and Booker T.

houston marathon 2011

The eagerly anticipated Houston Marathon 2011 took place this morning and the United States Running Circuit (USARC) happens on Saturday with the race of the Half Marathon Championship of 2011 presented by the Aramco Service Company. It's believed that thousands of runners across the country are said to have took part in the 39th Annual Chevron Houston Marathon.

Apparently, Ryan Hall, got out-kicked down the stretch to finish three seconds slower than the Moroccan-born Mo Trafeh’s 1:02:17, but he was beaming afterward. The roaster list of Houston Marathon 2011 will be Jorge Torres (Boulder, Colo.), an Olympian in 2008 to 10,000 meters, Patrick Smyth (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.), the 2010 half-marathon runner-up, 2004 Olympic Games Dan Browne (Chula Vista, Calif.), Jason Lehmkuhl (Minneapolis, Minn.), 2008 Half-Marathon runner-up, and Sergio Reyes (Los Osos, Calif.) 2010 USA Marathon Champion.

So a hotly contested Marathon in Houston and a proud day for the winners of the mens and womens heats of the run.
