ESQUIRE: Do you have any historic words with which to lead us into the summer?
MARISA MILLER: Historic words? Well, summer is my favorite time of the year. It?s warm, everybody gets outside, girls wear a little less clothing, and there?s lots of concerts. Everybody?s just ready to have some fun.
ESQ: You?re from Santa Cruz, where it?s pretty much summer all year round. You?re kind of the master of summer things, by default.
MM: Yes. It?s true. My parents met surfing, I grew up surfing, and your life ? everything ? revolves around the beach, no matter what season it is.
ESQ: Do you have any surfing advice for men who?ve never tried, but would like to this summer?
MM: The first thing ? it?s really important ? is a lesson. You want to be in the right conditions and you want to have a big enough board. Otherwise, it could be the worst day of your life.
ESQ: You?ve spent a lot of time wearing bathing suits, which you do incredibly well. Obviously, we?re all huge fans. Can you give us men some tips for the best bathing suit? Not everyone can look as good in just an iPod as you do.
MM: Yeah. I wouldn?t recommend that. That was a ?professional only? type of experience.
ESQ: To run into somebody in public wearing just an iPod probably wouldn?t be good.
MM: I feel highly responsible for that. I don?t want people to do that. That was a special occasion. But for guys ? and this is what I tell women, even ? it?s really important to know your body and just be comfortable. We?re not in Europe. I don?t understand the guys who wear that really tight Euro-spandex. I just don?t get it. For me, I grew up around surfers ? guys in trunks ? and I like that. You want a guy to be a guy, you know?
ESQ: So Speedos aren?t your thing then.
MM: No, no, not at all. I don?t know. It?s just a little too forward, maybe.
ESQ: It?s certainly is putting everything out there on the table from the get-go.
MM: Exactly. And women, we think differently than guys. Guys, you know, are very visual. Women, we work a little different. I think a good pair of good-fitting trunks, something that?s a reflection of you, that?s cool. But, you know, I think more is more. [Laughs.] I was going to say less is more, but you know? more is more.
ESQ: We?re very ?visual? ? that?s gotta be the nicest euphemism we?ve heard all year. What about shedding our, you know, winter coat?
MM: For me, working out is the number-one thing. It just makes you feel so much better mentally. It?s not like you have to go overboard and train like an athlete. It?s just more about using your body so you feel good. And also ? I don?t know, it?s kind of hard with guys and beauty products; I know you?re lucky if you just brush your teeth and use soap, so this might be going a little too far for some guys ? but there are lotions out there that have self-tanner. It just makes you feel better any time you?re showing more skin.
ESQ: We?ve never once considered self-tanning anything, but there?s something about the way you say it that makes us want to go out and buy it right now.
MM: Well you can try it in the privacy of your own home first.
ESQ: A big part of summer is drinking, and you?ve got this little film you did with Captain Morgan?s where you swordfight. Which is pretty crazy.
MM: Oh, it was crazy. I really like doing physical things ? I?m a very athletic person ? and there?s only been a few times in my career that I?ve been able to use that. We trained for a week. On set it was so hot, and we?re in these leather pants, and you?ve got all this sand ? it?s the craziest feeling. We were so irritated by the elements that when we were fighting we were so mad. And it actually worked.
ESQ: Were you channeling anything in particular?
MM: Well, this guy was trying to steal my rum and take me out. I?m not a violent person, but if I get backed in a corner, I?m definitely going to defend myself.
ESQ: If somebody?s going to steal your rum, you need to at least try to stab them. Those are words to live by this summer.
MM: Exactly. You?ve gotta fight for your right to party, right?
ESQ: Of all your fellow SI models, or Victoria?s Secret Angels, who?s the next you?d most likely bring to your next summer party?
MM: God, let me think about this one.
ESQ: You can say all of them.
MM: All of them? Well, Brooklyn is a very, very sweet girl.
And now for what you really came to see!
