So, I have some sinking feeling that most of you did not care to tune into the Big East semi-final matchup between the Syracuse Orangemen and the UConn Huskies. Well, you probably made the wrong decision there as the Orangemen won 127-117 in six overtimes.
Yes, that is correct. SIX OVERTIMES. The game itself had a start time at about 9:30pm est and the game ended at 1:22 AM est. The legendary finished propelled the Orangemen onto the next round and puts a dent into the hopes of the UConn Huskies of trying to get a number one seed for the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
It appeared earily on that the game ended in regulation when Syracuse guard Eric Devendorf hit a jump shot to win the game for Syracuse. However, the play was reviewed and the shot was waived off.
The game was a back and forth struggle through all six of the overtime periods until Andy Raultins (son of Canadian basketball coach, Leo)hit a three-point shot in the sixth overtime to create some distance. Then, Syracuse forward Paul Smith added a three-point play to help the Orangemen pull away.
Most of you are probably asking is this the longest overtime game of all-time. Well, for the Big East tournament it was. However back in 1981, Cincinatti and Bradley in a regular season matchup went into a seven overtime classic which ended in a victory for Cincinatti, 75-73.
All I have to say now is, the tournament has not even begun yet and I am out of breath already.
