Readers report from the royal wedding
Six intrepid USA TODAY readers will share their experiences while in London this week for the royal wedding. Let's meet them.
Daniel Whaley, 19
Occupation: Student
Hometown: Winnipeg, Manitoba
Whaley is studying business administration at the University of Winnipeg in Canada. His interest in the royal couple stems from his work with the Monarchist League of Canada, where he was once assigned an essay on the shared Canadian/British monarchy. Whaley says he looks forward to watching Britain's "(and Canada's!)" future king and queen walk down the aisle.
Itinerary includes: Touring Cambridge University, seeing a musical and taking a walking tour of London.
Jan Risher, 47
Occupation: Freelance writer
Hometown: Lafayette, La.
When Risher was 8, her grandmother would tell her tales about Queen Elizabeth and the royal heirs and ancestors. Risher says she has read everything she can on the Windsors and Wales and has booked a mother-daughter trip to London to take in the "royal spectacle." Risher and her 13-year-old daughter plan to camp out on the procession route before the wedding and watch the festivities on a big screen in Hyde Park, near Buckingham Palace.
Itinerary includes: A royal London bike tour and visits to the Tate Modern and Stonehenge.
Becky Druml, 53
Occupation: Owner, Andraline Investments
Hometown: Brookfield, Wis.
Druml, an admitted royal fanatic, subscribes to Royalty Monthly and Majesty magazinesand has two dogs named Camilla Parker Bowles and Prince Charles. She plans to stay with her sister in a village south of London and stand along the parade route, ready to wave back to the royal couple. After the ceremony, she and her sister will celebrate at a street party in Ewell, Surrey. "Friends just can't get over my fascination for the royal family," she says. "I like to say it's my version of fantasy football."
Itinerary includes: Exploring the town of Epsom, visiting the Design Museum, flying to the White Cliffs of Dover in a private plane.
Julie Hetherington, 49
Occupation: Senior sales director, Mary Kay Cosmetics
Hometown: San Diego
Hetherington and her 17-year-old daughter, Emily, and best friend, Jane Giannoulas, say they have "Kate Fever" and are making the journey to London to witness the wedding of the century. "Our understanding husbands and my son, Jordan, all think we've lost our minds and are content to be at home, comfortably watching sports," she says.
Itinerary includes: Shopping at Harrods, a Thames River cruise, afternoon tea at the Ritz and a showing of Mamma Mia!.
Laura Scalzitti, 29, Michele Voss Bergeman, 27
Occupations: Store manager; service-learning coordinator
Hometowns: Bonaire, Ga., and Peyton, Colo.
Scalzitti and Bergeman are self-proclaimed "history nerds" who met in 2006 while working as tour guides on the battleship Missouri in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Their shared love for history naturally perpetuated a love for travel, and they always dreamed of taking a trip abroad. The friends are reuniting for their first epic adventure overseas and will be scouring the streets of London to find the perfect souvenir and maybe a little something for their husbands.
Itinerary includes: Visiting the Churchill war rooms, hitting the Globe Theatre for a showing of Hamlet and exploring Tower Bridge.
