Believe it or not, this January 1st won't be all about football on TV. New Year's Day also marks the launch of Oprah Winfrey's new network, OWN, at noon ET, on the channel that is currently the Discovery Health Channel.
What exactly awaits you at OWN? If you know anything about Winfrey, then you know that this talk show host/media mogul wants to empower you. She wants to make over all aspects of your life—from your cluttered home to your repressed spirit. She wants you to know yourself, to accept who you are, and then to become even better. The programming on OWN is all more or less geared toward achieving that goal.
Winfrey herself won't appear on every show on the new network, holding your hand through your entire enlightenment process. This is about self-empowerment, people! She can't do everything for you! Besides, she's done that for one hour a day for the last 25 years. But she has promised to appear on 70 hours of programming a year. And rest assured she'll be at the launch, hosting the first show, Oprah's Guide to OWN.
The lineup for that first day of programming features shows that might make you a better parent, inspire you with a successful celebrity's story, help you declutter your home, galvanize you to search for a lost loved one, or get you thinking about miracles. 'I felt like I should cover up before I take a picture with this baby,' pop legend says of meeting Bieber while wearing racy '80s outfit.

Cher turned heads at the VMAs back in September when she proudly showed up in the same barely there outfit she wore for her 1989 "If I Could Turn Back Time" video. However, the 64-year-old pop icon admits that she began feeling a bit inappropriately dressed when she was introduced to Justin Bieber that evening.
"I thought, 'I'll do myself in a decade', and that [body stocking] was the closest thing I had. And then someone said, 'Will you take a picture with Justin Bieber,' and I said, 'Sure', not knowing who he was," she recently recalled to British talk-show host Graham Norton. "And then this child, who came up to here [my chest], and I felt like I should cover up before I take a picture with this baby."
Of course, Bieber wasn't the only up-and-coming star Cher had the pleasure of meeting that night. She also had the honor of holding Lady Gaga's meat purse when the latter singer took the stage to accept a Moonman in the now-infamous meat dress.
"Well, I wear that every night in Las Vegas, so I just whipped it out," Cher said recently to MTV News of her scanty VMA getup. "I didn't have time to think of, like, getting a costume. So I had it and thought it would just be fun to just take off on myself, not knowing I was going to be handling the meat purse.
"But, you know, there's those moments you just remember [forever]," she added. " 'Here, Cher, will you hold my meat purse?' "

As fellow Cash Money affiliates Lil Wayne, B.G., Juvenile, Mack Maine and Baby made their way into the Fifth African Baptist Church in New Orleans on Thursday morning (December 30), hundreds of fans gathered outside the church to pay tribute to fallen hometown rapper Magnolia Shorty.
In addition to Weezy and his crew, a number of other local bounce artists made their presence felt at the funeral, including Partners-N-Crime, Kilo G, DJ Jubilee, Big Freeda and Ms. Tee, who was the first female artist to sign with Cash Money, followed by Shorty in 1995, who was the label's second, and last, female member.
The closed funeral began at 11 a.m., and while more than 1,000 friends and relatives packed into the brick house of worship, the street outside was overflowing with nearly 1,500 fans paying tribute to the bounce legend. Many were wearing shirts in praise of Shorty (born Renetta Lowe), 28, with messages such as "R.I.P. Magnolia Shorty" and "We Love You Renetta," as well as buttons that read "Forever 'Shorty.' "
Wayne, Birdman and Mack Maine tweeted their condolences in the wake of Shorty's murder last week, but on Thursday, it was former Cash Money rapper and Hot Boyz member B.G. who remembered his fallen comrade after the funeral.
"Magnolia Shorty was like a sister to me and it ain't just what she meant to me; it's what she meant to Louisiana, it's what she meant to New Orleans," B.G. told MTV News, noting that he was the one who brought Shorty into the Cash Money fold when she was just 12 years old. "She was the queen of bounce. She was someone you loved to be around. She was the best at what she do. I'm really speechless right now, but it ain't sunk in yet. ... She owned this city, but she was this close to ownin' the world."
The program for the service featured a photo of Shorty under the headline "A Homegoing Celebration for a Phenomenal Queen." Shorty was gunned down last Monday alongside an unidentified man in a vehicle that crashed near a New Orleans East housing complex. Her murder came seven years after the November 2003 killing of another New Orleans rapper, James "Soulja Slim" Tapp, whose original stage name was Magnolia Slim and who grew up with Shorty in the Magnolia housing projects and gave her the Magnolia Shorty stage name.
The funeral was to be followed by a traditional New Orleans second line celebration in which her casket was be paraded down the street accompanied by musicians, friends, family and supporters.
Share your memories of Magnolia Shorty in the comments.

Sharpay and her pet dog, Boi, travel to New York City for a role in a Broadway hit, only to discover the part wasn't what she expected. From the wardrobe, I'm guessing this is a campy-type of comedy that's meant to appeal to the Disney crowd (and I don't mean that in a snarky way). I'm tempted to see it just for the dog: what a cutie :)Photos by INF Continue reading →

“Obviously we had expectations of being a playoff-caliber team this year. When that was not realized, I wanted to make sure we were setting ourselves up for the remainder of the season but more importantly for next season,” York explains in a follow-up to the Singletary firing, according to a Yahoo! Sports article. “I think it’s important to get somebody that’s the right fit for the 49ers.”

A piece of ice four times the size of Manhattan island has broken away from an ice shelf in Greenland, according to scientists in the U.S.
The 260 square-kilometer (100 square miles) ice island separated from the Petermann Glacier in northern Greenland early on Thursday, researchers based at the University of Delaware said.
The ice island, which is about half the height of the Empire State Building, is the biggest piece of ice to break away from the Arctic icecap since 1962 and amounts to a quarter of the Petermann 70-kilometer floating ice shelf, according to research leader Andreas Muenchow

On the East Coast, revenue streams are slowly rising as banks are still cratering and trying to recover from the recession. But out West, money ain't a thing, as Jermaine Dupri and Jay-Z once rapped.
Forbes has released their list of Hollywood's 20 Highest Earners of 2010, with Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus among those rubbing elbows with the likes of power players like Oprah Winfrey.
The venerable talk-show host topped the list with a whopping $315 million haul. Winfrey's earnings were generated for the most part by her multimedia deals, which include a syndication deal for her TV show, a magazine and her soon-to-be-launched network.
"Avatar" creator James Cameron came in second, more than $100 million behind Winfrey, with a tally of $210 million. Director and playwright Tyler Perry ($125 million), blockbuster movie producer Michael Bay ($120 million) and golfer Tiger Woods ($105 million) rounded out the top five.
Beyoncé was the only pop star to break the top 10. The "Single Ladies" superstar landed at #9, sandwiched between George Lucas and Dr. Phil. Mrs. Carter, whose hubby, Jay-Z, was named Hip-Hop's Cash King by Forbes in August with a tally of $63 million, pulled down $87 million over the past 12 months.
The blond-haired trio of Britney Spears ($64 million), Lady Gaga ($62 million) and Madonna ($58 million) made their mark on the list at numbers 13, 14 and 15, respectively.
Pop tarts Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift capped the list. The young stars placed at 18 and 19 on the list, with Disney star Cyrus pocketing $48 million, and country singer Swift depositing $45 million into her bank account.

Prince Charles is rumored to have a servant who squirts his toothpaste on his toothbrush. But Prince William and Kate Middleton will forgo such extravagances — for three years at least. The engaged couple will do their own laundry and cook their own meals for the remainder of the prince's RAF military service, according to a royal source. That's how long the couple intends to live on weekends in a cottage William rented in the town of Anglesey. "Prince William is not into extravagance and, like any other young officer in the armed forces, that is how he chooses to live his life," said the source. "He and [Kate] live without domestic staff and they wouldn't do it any other way. That's the life they want to lead." Of course, William and Kate have 24-hour body guards protecting them, but otherwise they live without maids or butlers. At least these kids don't have any full-time staff; somehow I don't imagine Prince William scrubbing his own toilet once a week.
