The major news from Wednesday was Tiger Woods will issue a statement this Friday at 11am est at the PGA Tour Headquarters in Ponte Vedre Beach, Florida.
The statement is expected to include Tiger's future plans for golf, discuss his much-checkered past, and apologize to his fans.
On the outset, this would appear to be what many people wanted out of Tiger about five months ago but I'm not going to jump on Tiger's back regarding the time he decides to make a statement or who he decides to allow in the room.
My real issue at this time is how big the sports media and the blogosphere is going to jump on this story. The Tiger Woods scandal has been one of the most remarkable stories in the past couple years and I expect that many people will take sides regarding whatever statement Tiger decides to make.
Woods personal life has pretty much become fodder for the likes of celebrity magazines, entertainment television, and pretty much anyone with Twitter account or blog. I can understand why it took him so long to respond; when your dealing with your own personal problems with your wife regarding trust, that should be your first priority.
There was no "perfect time" for Tiger to make his statement, if he made early it would make him appear guilty of something or open more questions to what happened. If he decides to do it when the 10th mistress comes out, he appears to be just trying to quash the next one from coming out. Every scenario has it's problems, there was no perfect time for Tiger.
For the statement itself, I'm not expecting it to blow anyone out of the water and it will be pedestrian at best. However, if there is anything even remotely memorable about it, certain people in the media will eat it up with a silver spoon. Think what the blogosphere and media might do if Tiger sheds a tear. The important thing that we have to remember, everyone is human and that the test of a man is how he carries himself after this scandal.
In the end, I feel good for Tiger. He finally gets to speak his mind regarding this scandal since pretty much everyone else has already had their say about it. This statement should not define Tiger Woods, the rest of his life should.
