I Like Being A 'Hick'

Many people consider those of us who live here in the UP of Michigan to be unsophisticated hicks. The UP is considered backwoods and not worth nearly as much as big cities are. It's really funny because the people who feel this way the most are those who lived here and have now moved away or the CHILDREN of those who have moved away. Sometimes I think they are just jealous of those of us who stayed here instead of leaving for the 'bright lights, big city' and are comfortable and happy with our laid back, more simple lifestyle. There HAS to be an explanation because we hear the derogatory, mean remarks over and over again. Of course, these are the same people who have to tell EVERYONE about what a great place the UP is to vacation--but other than that, it isn't worth even thinking about. It used to bother me to hear the remarks, but no longer. THEY aren't worth ME thinking about.

I must admit--because it is true--that we don't have the same sort of things that the big cities have. We don't have big symphony orchestras or operas or museums. We DO have the National Ski Hall of Fame/Museum and our little city orchestra. Our local university has quite a theater program and they put on a lot of productions for the local community. We don't have a zoo, but we don't need one--the entire UP is a wildlife preserve and we can see animals most any time of the day or not, and in their natural habitat. We don't have freeways, but we also don't have rush hour traffic or grid lock. The hospital is probably the tallest building we have at about eight stories--well, unless you count the smoke-stacks on the power plants. Some of the university buildings might be taller than the hospital, but not by much. You can still go and be by yourself here--actually, you could get lost and have your bones not be found for years. ;)

For a while now, I have posted some of the funniest items found in our police log from the local newspaper. Strange, strange things do go on, but for the most part, we seem to be a step behind time. And this makes the UP one of the best places to raise kids--we just DON'T have the same problems as urban areas do. Don't get me wrong, we aren't paradise--far from it. We have problems of varying degrees, even though they may be 'minor' and 'petty' compared to big city ones. As much as some people can't do enough to run away from here, there are many people who look at the lifestyle and smallness of the communities and run HERE just as fast; e.g., doctors, university professors, etc.

To show what life is like here, I will now post the police log--in its entirety--for Friday and Saturday (early morning)--of this past weekend.

FRIDAY

--8:01 AM, found bicycle
--8:05 AM, parking complaint
--8:20 AM, warrant arrest of subject wanted by another agency
--9:12 AM, tenants left garbage and vehicle in lot
--10:06 AM, lost keys, reported at police station
--12:00 PM, traffic assistance
--12:13 PM, lockout assistance
--12:22 PM, disgruntled customer
--12:30 PM, improper registration
--12:53 PM, vehicle lockout assistance
--1:09 PM, larceny
--4:30 PM, lost keys reported at police station
--4:33 PM, personal injury accident
--5:44 PM, possible finding of stolen bike
--7:35 PM, property damage accident
--7:45 PM, found checkbook, brought to police department

SATURDAY

--12:12 AM, alarm
--12:25 AM, open door
--12:39 AM, minor in possession
--12:49 AM, loud subjects
--12:44 AM, vehicle blocking driveway
--1:21, AM, hit-and-run property damage accident
--1:55 AM, minor in possession
--2:06 AM, malicious destruction of property complaint

Quite dull and boring, hey? How many places in the US could go half the weekend without a murder--or at least a shooting? While we may not be Mayberry, USA, we do seem to be closer to it than many other areas are. And I'm fine with that. Dull and boring suits me well.

Ted Kennedy

I was very hesitant to write about Ted Kennedy primarily because he is a well written about topic both in astrological circles and non astro circles.

But on Friday when I watched the memorial I was struck by one thing. I just kept FEELING Jupiter.

Ted's indulgences, yes, but also a largeness in general to his spirit. Many people talked about his unexpected appearances at the funerals of friends' parents, or following through with notes and cards to his constituents, long after a senator would be expected to correspond. His ability to treat all people the same no matter what their station. And of course, the mistakes in his youth that later beget a desperately needed wisdom that would only come with age. And finally his dedication to his Catholic faith. All of this felt Jupiter. And then when his niece Caroline spoke of the big star in the sky, I knew she was describing Jupiter (which she did reveal as being Jupiter) and how that star reminded her of Teddy. No kidding...Jupiter all the way!

Anyway, it is NO surprise to this little astrologer that Ted had Jupiter in Leo in the 7th house.
Jupiter in the house of 'others'---the house of 'relating'.

My own Sun/Saturn in Sag in the 9th could feel that pronounced Jupiter. Also, I have Jupiter in the 7th---It is big...drives my own husband nuts.

Rest in Peace, Teddy.

Texas Secessionist Hates America

“I hate that flag up there,” Kilgore said pointing to the American flag flying over the Capitol. “I hate the United States government. … They’re an evil, corrupt government. They need to go. Sovereignty is not good enough. Secession is what we need!”

“We hate the United States!,” he said later in the speech.

A-Rod has mad stick-ball skillz

When I was younger, one of my favorite pastimes was playing stickball. Nothing better than going out into the street and swinging at a rubber ball with a beat-up stick pretending that you were Rod Carew.

In the above clip, current New York Yankees Jerry Hairston Jr. and Alex Rodriquez are shown playing stick-ball with some local kids in the Bronx.

All I have to say is the New York Yankees have probably already signed that eight-year old to a contract.

end of the rainbow

Well it's a cliche, but it isn't called the Rainbow Coast for nothing. It may be obvious but it finally hit me recently that the Rainbow Serpent is actually present in the rainbows we see. Even more interesting, is that here on the south coast is the only place I have seen the end of a rainbow, not once, but many times - on the sea, painting a tree in a paddock. One day I am going to run out in that field and stand in those rays myself and maybe I could ascend....

These were taken while driving back from Denmark this afternoon.

Fantasy Drafthelp: Matt Berry's latest advice

FDH has been fairly critical of Matt Berry over time (if you listen hard enough, you can hear a solitary, frustrated voice from the Bristol campus yelling out, "More than a little critical, fellas!"). And true, some of it has been in over-the-top ways, which we have admitted in retrospect in ways that lesser men would not. We're stand-up guys like that.

Having said that, our animus has stemmed from the ways that the man with the biggest megaphone in our industry has represented all of us -- a responsibility which, like it or not, he has. Our recent industry summit, at which ESPN was not represented because of concerns over our concerns with them, focused in part on the responsibility we have to our content consumers not to embrace our inner say-anything Skip Baylesses at the expense of credible commentary.

So, with the publication of this year's Berry Manifesto for the football season, it's worth a look to see if the level of concern we have raised in the past is justified.

Shockingly, it is not (at least for this moment in time).

First of all, there's none of this "don't take Terrell Owens no matter what" gaga polluting his analysis this year. That's a big step forward in and of itself. And the pragmatism he shows in advising that a big-time WR could well be a first-round pick is a far cry from the "Take a RB no matter how picked-over they may be" advice of years past. Now, he still says, "Don't take a kicker until the last round," which is still a bit of know-nothingism since it disregards our second-favorite word during a draft -- "context," with "value" of course being Number 1, and since Berry actually uses "value" in his column, he probably owes us something! But the kicker advice is not terribly consequential, fortunately.

On balance, his advice is rich in context and research, areas for which we have found fault in the past when he has been more sound-byte oriented in our opinion. Were there any points that made us ponder anything we have not thought of before? No -- and we're honest enough to admit that some pundits in the industry deliver that punch in our estimation. Is his advice on a par with what you will find in our FANTASY FOOTBALL DRAFTOLOGY 2009 guide? To quote Chad Ocho, "Child please!" But that's kind of setting an unfair benchmark for the poor guy, don't you think?

But even this mildly qualified praise is light years ahead of what we've written previously. It certainly gives the lie to the bunker mentality at "Bristol Fantasy Central" that those who criticize an approach are by definition ankle-biting haters -- but then again, we knew that take was without credibility anyway. We were prepared to be more generous when circumstances dictated -- and when Matt Berry called our bluff by stepping up his game this year, we proved it. Did our words and those of others critical of a more "show biz" approach to fantasy sports at the Worldwide Leader cause a reevaluation of approach and rededication? If so, we applaud him, but at any rate, we're just grateful that the man most identified with our industry is upholding his responsibility to put us collectively in a credible light.

"JoJo Personal life"

JoJo and her mother reside in New Jersey, and her recording studio is in Manhattan, New York City. She was home schooled for three years, has stated that "school was definitely a big part of my life". She performs well academically, receiving marks in the As and Bs.

JoJo dated American soccer player Freddy Adu from May 2005 until September 2006. Both met on the MTV show Fake ID Club while she was hosting it. JoJo made an appearance in the commentary box at a New England Revolution home game when they were playing D.C. United. Freddy Adu registered an assist in that game. A Washington Post article in November 2006 reported that the couple split after one year. JoJo mentioned on American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest that she and Adu were still good friends.

JoJo stated that she was single on the October 18, 2006 episode of Live with Regis and Kelly. She was also in the October 2006 issue of Teen People magazine confirming her breakup with Freddy Adu. She said: "I'm single right now and it's good. I'm so young. I'm going to be 16 in December and I'm just so busy. It's hard if you also want to date someone who has a high-profile profession; we were just both consumed with our own world..."

Since 2006 she's a good friend with actress Emma Roberts, Sara Paxton and Robin Williams' daughter Zelda Williams. She appeared with her father on the Behind the scene of JoJo's "Too Little Too Late".

On February 28, 2007, she was ranked at number ten in the list of Forbes top twenty earners under 25 with an annual earning of $1 million.

JoJo announced on her MySpace blog that she will be attending Northeastern University,[42] but she will not hold her career and decided to continue to focus on her music career. In August 2009, she confirmed that she is finished with her High School and will focus very hard on her future projects.

In July 2009, JoJo was ranked at number five in the list "Barely Legal: The 10 Hottest ’90s Babies" by Complex.com, after Emma Roberts and Willa Holland.

Senator Inhofe: "We're almost reaching a revolution in this country."

The Left has attempted to portray the Town Hall protestors as "astro-turf." No doubt the insurance companies and Fox News have played their part ,but these are real people with real (if misguided) concerns. But they represent some 20-25% of the country. From the polls the percentage of Americans who support a "public option" may actually have risen from some 66 to 77% of the country. We won and they lost. Obama ran on universal health care. The 25% have every right to express their opinions and the Democrats have every right to ram universal health care down their throats. Elections have consequences, as we so often heard during the Bush years.

The Last week of August---The FDIC Report

Last weekend the Sun moved out of dramatic, showboaty Leo into discreet, quiet Virgo.
But please remember ---Quiet does not mean ---less lethal.

On Thursday---under the influence of Wednesday's Mars opposition Pluto, The FDIC released their quarterly report---Grim is the word.

So far, 81 banks have failed this year, including 45 in the second quarter.
That, in turn, has put enormous stress on the government’s deposit insurance
fund, which is supported by fees charged to the banks regulated by the
F.D.I.C.
Its second-quarter reserve of $10.4 billion compares with $45.2
billion a year earlier.
Most of the decline comes from money that the
agency has set aside to cover the cost of bank failures, and Ms. Bair said
the fund had ample resources to cover all insured depositors.
But the levels are so low that
F.D.I.C. officials said Thursday that they would
consider imposing a special assessment on the banks, on top of elevated
insurance fees, toward the end of the third quarter. Through similar
actions, it added about $9.1 billion. It also will begin to recover some
money by selling the assets of banks that it seized.
Ms. Bair said
she did not anticipate having to immediately tap an emergency
credit line run by the Treasury Department, although she did not rule it out. “I never say never,” she said
.

I would like you all to remember this posting. I think it could be important as planets begin to gather towards the cardinal grand cross in 2010.

Mike Vick Preseason Debut...Meh

Michael Vick's debut with the Philadelphia Eagles was on a scale of 1-10, a meh. He had a solid game going 4/4 passing for 14 yards and a 1 yard rush.

However for most people it was a rather dull appearance; since there was no Sportscenter highlight play, near-riot outside the Linc, or Michael Vick "sacrificing" a dog to the NFL Gods. It was pedestrian to say the least.

The one thing that we did learn from this is that Michael Vick can still play the game of football and looks to be a force on some level during the Eagles run to the Super Bowl this season whether it be positive or negative.

At this point, I think it is time to reserve judgment on Vick's football ability and media circus until the regular season.

Nessie Sighting - Web Search Technology Win

The elusive Loch Ness Monster may finally have been sighted ... but not with human eyes. Google Earth and satellite technology combined with an astute observer of an image may have found what scientists, locals, and tourists have been claiming to exist here on this Oblate Spheroid over the centuries.

The earliest on record is from 565 when St. Columbia saved the life of a local who was being attacked by a monster in the river Ness (though some spoilsports insist it was actually a wild boar).

The modern Nessie era began in 1933 when a local paper - the Inverness Courier - reported a sighting by a local a couple, the Spicers. Whilst driving along the loch side between Dores and Inverfarigaig they spotted a large creature crossing the road in front of them. The creature disappeared into the bushes in the direction of the Loch.

This report was taken up by the national press in London and the Nessie ball began to roll.

Loch Ness is huge - the largest fresh water body in Britain. It is over twenty two miles in length and over a mile and a half at its widest. Total surface area is approximately 21 square miles. Loch Ness is also deep and goes down almost 800 feet. It has been estimated that the loch is large enough to hold the entire population of the world ten times over. Caption Credit: wyrdology.com - Image Credit: Ciclee

The next year, 1934, the most famous photograph of Nessie was allegedly taken by surgeon R. K. Wilson. This, the "surgeon's photo" has been the focus of intense debate since it was first taken. Over the years several people have "confessed" to being involved in faking the surgeon's photo.

Sightings continue to be reported and every few years an expedition obtains funding to "prove" the truth once and for all. In 2003 a BBC expedition surveyed the entire Loch using sonar. They concluded that no monster exists.

It should be remembered that it is logically impossible to prove that something does not exist - only that it has not been found.

Nessie sightings continue to be reported every year, some backed by photographic evidence. Many of the reports come from tourists who have been enjoying the justly famous Scottish hospitality.

That is, until now!

Plesiosaurus - Plesiosaurus inhabited the oceans 200 million years ago. "flying" underwater with four wing like limbs. Its sharp teeth and snapping jaws formed a deadly trap for small aquatic animals. The long necked Plesiosaurus gave its name to the plesiosaurs, a group of flesh eating marine reptiles that are extinct. Along with the dolphin like ichthyosaurs and other marine reptiles, plesiosaurs were the "sea dragons" that inhabited the seas from 200 to 65 million years ago, while the dinosaurs were dominant on land. Proof That the Loch Ness Monster Exists?
SUN Online - Wednesday, August 26, 2009

This amazing image on Google Earth could be the elusive proof that the Loch Ness Monster exists.

Sun reader Jason Cooke spotted "Nessie" while browsing the Web site's satellite photos.

The shape seen on the surface of the 22-mile Scottish loch is 65ft long and appears to have an oval body, a tail and four legs or flippers.

Some experts believe Nessie may be a Plesiosaur, an extinct marine reptile with a shape like the Google image.

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to build a “Brick House”

Let’s be honest, there is not a lot of reasons to watch Pittsburgh Pirates baseball games in August. Outside the chance to visit PNC Park and the possibility to watch Albert Pujols hit a moon-shot, not a lot of upside about going to a Pirates game.

However, I did come across this clip of a Pirates fan named “Big Yellow” getting down to the docile tune “Brick House.”

Fans love to get onto the big screen and shake their money-maker. I guess they now know how strippers feel.

year of the ox and conference update

In November I will be presenting a paper at the Creative margins conference at Curtin. Much of it is already written but there is a lot of editing and work yet to be done. With a new house yet to be finished, a huge move likely during the September school holidays, 2 units of my Workplace Training for TAFE to complete and now a paper to write - all while still doing my 0.5 at TAFE (and the load of paperwork that goes with it) is it any wonder that I wake in the small hours emitting silent screams.....and then have to calm myself down enough to get back to sleep. Well it is the Year of the Ox and I knew it was going to be head down and bum up all year - just plod, plod along.

Having spoken to a friend who has not long completed her own doctorate, I feel a little more detached about the conference. It is possible that my talk will only be attended by 3 of my best supporters (2 of which might be my supervisors) and a few people who find themselves trapped in the auditorium having read the timetable incorrectly and accidently stayed on to support one of their own mates. Oh well - I still want to get it as right as I can, which means being able to answer questions like: what do you mean by psyche? I don't know, doesn't everyone know what that means? Maybe not if you go by the overwhelming number of interpretations. (It is quite probable that no-one will ask me that question but I still need to be prepared).

Anyway, I have updated the link CREATIVE MARGINS CONFERENCE on this blog so you can look at some of the abstracts if you are interested. Because I am not assuming prior knowledge, I want the paper to be accessible to any intelligent person, so will be posting portions of it here as a way to get some feedback.

This is a small extract:

My study assigns and examines a specific context for the imagination and its role in the human psyche. The theoretical framework is found in archetypal or Imaginal Psychology where the imaginal is perceived as a non-ordinary state of consciousness. Instead of dismissing them as fantasy, Imaginal Psychology proposes that images created by the imagination not only have meaning but an ability to effect change on a deeply psychic level. Furthermore it is my contention that the image and the activity of imagining enables us to enter an imaginal realm of archetypes.

The Right in all its ugliness

The major conservative sites cover the story of Ted Kennedy's death straight, of course, but the comments tell all. Not all of them but far too many.

From Lucianne :

First time in my life that I am not sad someone has died.

May he rot in he--. I have no simpathy for this scum bag.

I did a little soft-shoe dance, and offered the grandkids an extra helping of chocolate cake. As far as I'm concerned, hearing of he death of this evil, drunken, murderous buzzard is cause for celebration.

Ted died too quick, he should have suffered a lot more!

May this boil on the ass of the world rot for all eternity in Hell! And pray for Mary Jo.

From Free Republic:

Well. The Devil claims his own, after all.

He was not a good man and he was not helpful to this country. He was a bloated murderer who drank himself to pieces.

My heartfelt condolences to the poor, starving tumor.

You should always say something god about the dead. He’s dead. That’s good.

God held his own death panel. Just a few years too late big guy! An appropriate send off would be to put him behind the wheel of an Olds and drive him off the bridge! Good Riddance!

The world would have been better off had this Kennedy never been born. May he rot in hell.

From Hot Air:

Hell just got a little bigger.

Sorry, He was and always will be remembered(by me) as a P.O.S!

I’ve waited 40 years for that SOB to kick the bucket. I despise his rotten family.

The world has become a tiny bit better now that Ted Kennedy has left it.

Mmmmmmnnnnn . . . what’s that smell? Is that barbecue? Is that a pig roasting in hell?

I look forward to pissing on this man’s grave.

he was a traitor to America

Hey, I’m shakin’ my tail feather…..dance…dance…dance…dance!

The Saga Continues

All summer long I have been reporting on the work that has been done on the street in front of our house. It isn't done, yet. And we really have no idea WHEN it will be--could be this week, could be November. I thought I would take one post and write down all of the work that has been done up to now.

The first thing that happened was that the road was dug up so that water and sewage lines could be replaced. Of course, after this was done, we had areas of the street that were 1-3 inches lower (or more) than the rest of the road--it made for an interesting ride. When the pipes were done, the crew came in and added fill dirt and compacted everything so that it was a uniform 1 1/2 inches lower than the rest of the pavement. The city engineer--or whoever the yahoo is--inspected and told the construction company that they made a mistake. So, the company came back, dug out all of the compacted dirt, put in more fill, and compacted it all so that it was 3 inches lower than the pavement, like the engineer told them to. Some time later, a crew came down and patched the 3 inch areas and made them a uniform 1 1/2 inches deep. After this was done--a couple of weeks later, or so--a machine came down and 'munched' the surface of the street. This destroyed most, if not all, of the patches that were done previously. As a matter of fact, the 'muncher' chewed down to dirt in some places. Today, a crew came down and re-patched the places that had been brought down to dirt the last time. As everything seems to be quite uniform on the surface, I'm assuming the next step will be to come down and do the final paving. But, you never know, they may just come back and dig more holes.

I told K that the reason all of this is going on is that the city is trying to stimulate the economy by giving these people jobs. I don't think he was impressed with my thoughts.

And after all of this, I hope our city officials finally realize why there are so many re-call elections that take place.

Barack Obama and his socialist allies are undertaking the biggest power grab in the history of the United States. Subversion and dictatorship are strong words, but may, frighteningly, be the right words for what will result.

The truth is, the United States Constitution is being overthrown by domestic enemies of our Republic, and the rights guaranteed us, we the people of the United States, within the greatest of all political documents, have been stolen by a determined socialist ruling elite — Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Ted Kennedy, Barney Frank and others — that now governs from the quasi- “kingdom” of Washington, D.C.

Joseph Farah, never a class act, trashes Ted Kennedy: He was a rotten man – a wicked man.

Billy Gillispie's Wild Ride

Former Kentucky Men's basketball head coach Billy Gillispie was having a rather joyous day of playing golf and drinking with a friend. Then he was pulled over by a cop and charged with a DUI.

We get more information for Lexington, Kentucky's LEX 18.com:

Former University of Kentucky basketball coach Billy Gillispie was arrested early Thursday in Anderson County on suspicion of DUI.

Lawrenceburg Police said Gillispie was pulled over in a white 2009 Mercedes with Texas tags around 2:45 a.m. on US 127 after someone reported seeing the car driving erratically. Gillispie was arrested and charged with DUI.

Police say Gillispie refused to take a breathalizer or blood alcohol test. A passenger in Gillispie's car, 42-year-old Charles O'Connor, was also arrested and charged with alcohol intoxication.

Police say that when they pulled Gillispie over, he told them that he and O'Connor had been golfing. Officers said they smelled a strong odor of alcohol on the former coach.

Gillispie and O'Connor were taken to the Franklin County Detention Center. Gillispie's lawyer, Darrin Winslow, arrived at the jail at abotu 9:15 a.m. to "take him home, back to Louisville."

This is the third time that the former coach of Kentucky has been charged with a DUI or a DWI. He was charged back in 1999 in Oklahoma with a DUI and in 2003, he was charged with suspicion of a DUI when he was coaching UTEP in 2003, those charges were later dropped.

On some level it is to be suspected that a individual who gets caught driving drunk once might repeat the offense again. However, for a former high-profile college basketball coach, you would think that he would be a little more careful.

This might hinder Gillispie's chance at getting another job due to the ramifications that entail from this charge. How can a coach tell a parent that I will take care of your son, when he has three DUI's? How can he discipline a player for under-age drinking when he has tossed back a couple cold ones himself.

In the end, this should be a learning experience for Billy Gillispie, "Fool me one time, shame on you. Fool me three times, shame on you, Billy."

Oikeen sopivaa askartelua illalla tv:n ääressä.

Sometimes it hurts the most to be who you are

Hi everybody.

City Pörssi on.

14cm korko 4-5cm platformilla. :---) Korkeimmat korkkarini ikinä! Pitäisi opetella kävelemään näillä luontevammin.
Tässä muut ostokset, joihin kuului yllätykseksini monta sormusta. Sormusten lisäksi ostin kultaista ketjua ja "rinkuloita" että voisin joskus tehdä koruja, panta H&M:ltä ja ihana niittiranneke Lindexiltä, jollaista etsinkin! ♥
Nämä kolme sormusta H&M:n lastenpuolelta.

Keskiviikkona katsoin vuonna -86 tehdyn Pretty in Pink -leffan, oikeastaan tuon nimen takia.

PS. Arvatkaas mihin törmäsin pari päivää sitten! No nettisivuun, jossa on kolme Suomessa esittämätöntä Muumijaksoa! Varsinkin tuo pikku Myy -jakso on luv! ♥
