As the gulf between Darrelle Revis and the New York Jets widens exponentially on a daily basis, the next installment in Electronic Arts’ best-selling football video game franchise, Madden 2011, hit store shelves all across the country Tuesday and, according to the ratings bestowed on the individual players by the game designers, Revis is among the six best players in the National Football League.
Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen, San Francisco 49ers middle linebacker Patrick Willis and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning were the other five players who were given a rating of ‘99’ in Madden 2011, which is the highest rating any one player can receive in the game.
Therefore, in the world of Madden, not only is Revis looked upon as the best player on his team; he is regarded as one of the elite players in the NFL. But unfortunately for Revis and Jets fans, art and life are far from being in perfect alignment.
So, factually and realistically speaking, even though the 25-year-old Revis IS the best player on Gang Green, Jets owner Woody Johnson is fully prepared to stand firm and allow the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year Award runner-up to sit out the entire 2010-11 season.
This begs the question would Saints owner Tom Benson have taken the same position with Super Bowl XLIV Most Valuable Player Drew Brees or would 49ers owner John York have played this game of chicken with three-time Pro Bowler Patrick Willis or would Colts owner Jim Irsay plant his flag to prove a point to four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning?
As is the disgruntled Jets cornerback, Brees, Willis and Manning, as well as Chris Johnson and Jared Allen, are critical to the success of their respective teams. But it appears only Woody Johnson, a multi-billionaire, isn’t willing to make the sacrifices necessary to keep his best player on the field to improve his team’s chances for success.
And for the moment, it looks like the only way to catch Darrelle Revis on a football field this coming season is in the world of Madden 2011, where he is one of the six highest rated players in the game and the only one of the group not in training camp.
Where is the justice?
