NFL Transactions 2/16/09 - The Day Fred Taylor was no longer a Jaguar

Mike Brown being cut by the Bears? Expected, but semi shocking.
Fred Taylor being cut by the Jaguars? Expected, but...wow

Taylor, 16th on the All Time NFL Rushing List with 11,271 yards, has had a storybook NFL career. Early on he had so much promise but was fragile, which costs him 23 games between 1999 and 2001. But from 2002 (where he started 16 games) onward, Taylor has proven to be durable enough for NFL punishment and fast enough to change the game in an instant given his absurd 4.6 YPA. He wanted to stay with the Jaguars and wouldn't have been around much longer as he apparently only wants to stick around until he passes Jim Brown's career total, which at 1,041 could be done in one season. But the Jaguars needed to pass the reigns to Maurice Jones Drew sometime, it's just a shame it has to come at the expense of such a great guy. Taylor was due $6 million next year.

In other news, Chris McAlister was cut today by the Ravens. A little shocking considering his 10 years with the team, but he has had issues with injuries and inconsistency as of late and was scheduled to make $8 million next year. Even more shocking? McCalister has made three Pro Bowls, while Taylor has made one. Regardless, both should be picked up, though obviously for less pocket change than they were expecting.

In the money move of the day, the Denver Broncos cut Dewayne Robertson, Jamie Winborn, Niko Koutouvides, Nate Jackson, Marquand Manuel and John Engelberger. While none of these players are big, big names, a few of them were receiving huge contracts. Robertson was due $16 million next year as part of a contract he got in his younger years, while Koutouvides (3.062 million), Winborn (2.25 million), and Engelberger (2.185 million) were due a ton too. Between this and a few cuts the other day, the Broncos have freed up about $30 million in cap space for new head coach Josh McDaniels to rebuild this team. If only second chances were always this easy.
