Yesterday, the Chiefs cut CB Patrick Surtain, LB Donnie Edwards, QB Damon Huard, and waived TE Michael Merritt. Most of these moves were expected, but they saved the team at leats about $10 million in cap room, mostly thanks to Surtain and Edwards.
Both Surtain and Edwards were stars were the team they played for prior to the Chiefs, but both of them had more recently battled injuries and age to the tune of lesser performance. They'll both certainly join another team next season, but not for anywhere near last year's price.
As far as Huard, aside from his miracle 2006 of 11 TDs and 1 INT in 8 starts, he's been sort of a career backup. And after Tyler Thigpen showed his talents last year, Huard was deemed too expensive a backup. He's had stops with several teams in the league, and so again I wouldn't be suprised to see Huard on a team this coming year.
Michael Merritt didn't do much in his one rookie season with the Chiefs, but he did sign very very late for a seventh rounder due to injury and get charged with marijuana possession. So can't say it was a total waste of a year for the rookie TE.
