Will The Stanley Cup Return To Canada, This Year?

Tonight, the Stanley Cup Finals begin as the Boston Bruins face off against the Vancouver Canucks to have a chance to hoist the Stanley Cup. The Bruins have not won a Stanley Cup since 1972 and many fans still feel the pain of 1990 loss to the Edmonton Oilers.

However for the nation of Canada, it's been nearly seventeen years since any Canadian team has hoisted the cup. The last team to do so was the 1993 Montreal Canadiens led by coach Jacques Demers. Since that victory, four Canadian teams have made the Stanley Cup Finals and none were successful in claiming the cup.

In a sport, that is so popular in the great white north, it's still somewhat of a national tragedy when the Carolina Hurricanes/Tampa Bay Lightning/and Anaheim Ducks have claimed trophies in recent memory and the Toronto Maple Leafs/Edmonton Oilers/and Montreal Canadiens have not.

This year might be Canada's best shot in reclaiming the cup, Vancouver's goaltender Roberto Luongo was the goaltender for the Canadian national team during the Winter Olympics and he might be the deciding factor in a series that features Boston's prevalent defense making it hard for offensive talent like Mason Raymond/The Sedin Twins/and Ryan Kesler.

The Bruins are going to be a formidable opponent for Canucks offense but the one possible weakness is goaltender Tim Thomas who has had a rather up and down playoffs so far but if the Bruins defense shuts down the Canucks, Thomas will not need to perform at such a high level.

For the common fan, it's a series everyone wants to see, Offense vs. Defense, USA vs. Canada, and even, 17 year drought vs. 28 year drought. All I know for sure is that one of those droughts will end and for Canada's sake, Vancouver better be the victor or it will be another year that the national sport will not claim the highest trophy in the land.

Bench Clearing Lacrosse Brawl, Yes Please!

The below video comes to us from the great white north of Canada during a lacrosse match between the Toronto Rock/Buffalo Bandits of the National Lacrosse League.

Let's just say that things got a bit chippy:

"Catchin' Bieber Fever, Forget The Swine Flu"

What the hell is going on here. Is Tim Westwood serious? It's bad enough you even have Justin Bieber on your show, but to have him spit a freestyle just crosses the line. There's absolutely no chance he wrote this garbage anyways is there? Luckily I did find some humor in this video. Skip past the garbage to the 2:15 mark where the real shit goes down...
Now I'm completely flabbergasted as to whether Bieber is trying to cop a feel on this young girly, or is he innocently trying to keep his fans happy and take a few photos with some kids. Regardless of whether he's trying to get some preteen poon or being a good samaritan, he is struggling to pick up this 50lb girl. Weak Beiber, weak. It's just depressing this kid is already more successful than me at age 16.
P.S. Why is he wearing a NYY hat when he's from canada. Support your roots kid and wear a shitty Blue Jays hat to match you're shitty freestyling ability.

"Over"- Drake

This is the first single off Drakes upcoming album, Thank Me Later, which is due out in May. Produced by Boi-1da, a 23 year old up and coming producer out of Canada. Guess Canada maybe has one claim to fame now.

Adolf Hitler learns about Canada's loss to the USA

It was only a matter of time until someone decided to make Hitler parody video about the United States victory over Canada in Men's Hockey at the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Man, Hitler needs to calm down a little. It was only a preliminary game.

Canada's Men's Hockey Team (Fake) Rap - "The Olympic Welcome Song"

This clip has been floating around the blogosphere for the past couple of days and I figured that some of you might have missed it.

This is a parody music video done from the perspective of the Canadian Men's Hockey which features a rap song hatin' on the rest of the world.

All it needed was a cameo from T-Pain, it would have been a hit.

The Chunnel Begets ... The Strunnel!

Russia is proposing to dig a tunnel, a very long tunnel, by which crossing and transporting goods across the Bering Strait to Alaska (and back) can be accomplished without the necessary calculations for weather and/or the limitations of air transport.

Much like the "Channel Tunnel" - The Chunnel ... I supposed one could call it The Strunnel!

Russia Plans World's Longest Tunnel, a Link to Alaska
By Yuriy Humber and Bradley Cook

April 18 (Bloomberg) -- Russia plans to build the world's longest tunnel, a transport and pipeline link under the Bering Strait to Alaska, as part of a $65 billion project to supply the U.S. with oil, natural gas and electricity from Siberia.

The project, which Russia is coordinating with the U.S. and Canada, would take 10 to 15 years to complete, Viktor Razbegin, deputy head of industrial research at the Russian Economy Ministry, told reporters in Moscow today. State organizations and private companies in partnership would build and control the route, known as TKM-World Link, he said.

A 6,000-kilometer (3,700-mile) transport corridor from Siberia into the U.S. will feed into the tunnel, which at 64 miles will be more than twice as long as the underwater section of the Channel Tunnel between the U.K. and France, according to the plan. The tunnel would run in three sections to link the two islands in the Bering Strait between Russia and the U.S.

"This will be a business project, not a political one," Maxim Bystrov, deputy head of Russia's agency for special economic zones, said at the media briefing. Russian officials will formally present the plan to the U.S. and Canadian governments next week, Razbegin said.

The Bering Strait tunnel will cost $10 billion to $12 billion, and the rest of the investment will be spent on the entire transport corridor, the plan estimates.

In Alaska, a supporter of the project is former Governor Walter Joseph Hickel, who plans to co-chair a conference on the subject in Moscow next week.

"Governor Hickel has long supported this concept, and he talks about it and writes about it," said Malcolm Roberts, a senior fellow at the Anchorage-based Institute of the North, a research policy group focused on Arctic issues. Hickel governed Alaska from 1966 to 1969 as a Republican and then from 1990 to 1994 as a member of the Independence Party.

Alaska's current officials, however, are preoccupied with other issues, including a plan to develop a pipeline to transport natural gas from the North Slope to the lower 48 U.S. states, Roberts said.

----
Rail links in Russia and the U.S., where an almost 2,000- kilometer stretch from Angora to Fort Nelson in Canada would continue the route, would cost up to $15 billion, Razbegin said. With cargo traffic of as much as 100 million tons annually expected on the World Link, the investments in the rail section could be repaid in 20 years, he said.

"The transit link is that string on which all our industrial cluster projects could hang," Zubakin said.

Japan, China and Korea have expressed interest in the project, with Japanese companies offering to burrow the tunnel under the Bering Strait for $60 million a kilometer, half the price set down in the project, Razbegin said.
----
The figures for the project come from a preliminary feasibility study. A full study could be funded from Russia's investment fund, set aside for large infrastructure projects, Bystrov said.
