Peace in Enduring Conflict between India & Pakistan found at US Open

Since the partition of British India in August 1947, which resulted in the creation of the Republic of India and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, there have been three major wars, one minor war and numerous armed skirmishes between the two countries, predominantly as a consequence of the dispute over Kashmir.

And over the past decade, the proliferation of nuclear weapons has created an atmosphere where relations between India and Pakistan grow more tenuous with each passing year. However, over 7,000 miles away, peace has been discovered in the Indo-Pakistani conflict on the courts of the US Open in Flushing, Queens.

Nicknamed the ‘Indo-Pak Express’, the 16th seeded duo of Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Rohan Bopanna have combined stellar play with the bond of an inspiring seven-year friendship to earn a spot in the Men’s Doubles Finals, where they will face top seeded twin brothers Bob & Mike Bryan (USA).

During their magical run, Bopanna, a native of India, and Qureshi, Pakistan’s top tennis player, pulled off notable upsets against the 2nd seeded pair of Daniel Nestor (CAN) and Nenad Zimonjic (SRB) in the fourth round and the 10th seeded twosome of Dick Norman (BEL) and Wesley Moodie (RSA) in the quarterfinals.

With their 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 semifinal victory over Eduardo Schwank (ARG) and Horacio Zeballos (ARG) Wednesday, Bopanna and Qureshi stand on the cusp of winning their first Grand Slam Doubles championship in the most successful run they have ever had as a tandem.

More significantly though, two humble men whose backgrounds should have precluded them from working together, as well as becoming good friends, have brought to light the fact that so much more can be accomplished in peace and unity than with angry words, prideful posturing and war.

And no matter the result of the Men’s Doubles Finals, Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Rohan Bopanna have proven to be a credit and shining examples to India, Pakistan and the rest of the world.

Brawl Breaks Out at US Open of All Places

Beer, gambling and profanity have the potential to be a combustible mixture in a stadium filled with thousands of spectators. And typically, the locales where these elements lead to an explosion are at baseball, basketball, football and hockey games.

Apparently though, tennis stadiums are also an environment where unseemly behavior can take center stage and temporarily detract from the show of athleticism at its highest level.

According to NYDailyNews.com, three unidentified fans were banned from returning to the US Open until 2013 for their participation in a melee that took place at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday night.

"If they come on the grounds any time before then, they can be arrested for trespassing," said Chris Widmaier, spokesman for the United States Tennis Association. The ban covers the rest of this year’s tournament through September 30, 2012.

The fighting ensued when a woman slapped a young man across the face after confronting him about his excessive use of profanity.

"C'mon, smack me again," he taunted. "Go ahead ... I don't give a f--- what anybody wants. I got a lot of money on this game, and I f------ paid for my ticket."

Additional taunts by the beer-swilling man finally prompted the woman’s companion, a bespectacled older gentleman, to engage in a confrontation that started with an attempted choke hold and ended with both men tumbling down the stairs of the upper deck of the stadium.

The commotion briefly halted play between third-seeded Novak Djokovic and Philipp Petzschner as all parties involved were handcuffed and taken to a loading dock area, but released when they declined to press charges.

Djokovic went on to win the match in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), to advance to the third round of the tournament, where he’ll face American hopeful and Yonkers native James Blake.

As for the fight between three grown adults in the stands of a tennis match, there’s only one question left to ask here.

Really?

Ultimately though, the burden of the blame lies with the couple for placing their hands on another individual in an aggressive manner. They had absolutely no right to administer their own brand of justice no matter how much profanity was being spewed by the young man, who would have been well within his rights to press charges for assault.

Bethpage: Not For the Pros

Lucas Glover won the US Open at Bethpage Black on Monday. You can get your info through other venues, so I won't go into details. Suffice it to say that the conditions weren't great (including the "mud ball" seen in the vid above), Glover was persistent and lucky, and he beat out story lines Phil Mickelson and David Duval (and, of course, Tiger). Ricky Barnes, who shot a record 132 over the first 36, joined Mickelson and Duval in second place. Mickelson becomes the leader in runner-up finishes for the US Open, having come in second five times. Tiger finished tied for 6th after winning last year, four shots back.

More importantly, however, comes this gem from USA Today. Apparently, Stars Wars ain't the only phenomenon that gets fans to line up days in advance. Actually, this is kind of like a cross between waiting for Star Wars and going to the drive-in/tail-gaiting for a football game. From early last week, fans showed up at Bethpage to play on the same course their idols would soon play. Some had to wait for days. The best line: "Started playing when I was 32, when I got married, and the golf has lasted a lot longer than the marriage. I can tell you that much. So, that's why we're here."

"FORGETTTA BOUT IT"

Usually, I am not really a fan of these ESPN "cut-away skits" but this is actually pretty funny.

ESPN asked some players since the US Open is being played at BethPaige Black to try out their New York accents.

Let's just say that no one is going to confuse any of them with New Yorkers anytime soon.

Sock Puppets + US Open Preview = FTW

Let’s be honest, how many times when you were a kid, you created a sock puppet and recreated a news-cast or play using them? Alright, I clearly did not but I have a feeling that some of you have even done it yourself or with your kids.

The peeps over at Waggle Room presented a US Open preview with sock puppets. Yes, this clearly might be the best idea since Twitter. They have cameos by Angel Cabrera and even Tiger Woods.

In the end, I will let the video speak for itself.
