Texas Rangers Might Be "Doin The Claw" For A World Series Title

Tonight is the first game of the World Series and the Texas Rangers might have a chance to claim their first ever World Series title.

One of the playoffs songs that has been sweeping the Ranger Nation is called, "The Claw" by Randy Phillips and Canton Jones.

Essentially, "The Claw" is gesture made after a nice defensive play or big offensive hit by a Ranger player and to be honest, "Do The Claw" just sounds cool:

Buster Olney Makes One of the Worst Comparisons Ever

This morning on SportsCenter, Buster Olney did a little preview of the Yankees-Phillies spring training World Series rematch. (I’m sure everyone was getting geared up to watch that one, right?) Usually, Buster is pretty solid, but today he had his head a little too far up his ass. Olney stated that the Yankees-Phillies rivalry is developing into a rivalry like the one between the Celtics and Lakers in the 1980s. What?!? I was completely baffled. I was unaware the Yankees and Phillies even had a rivalry.

This completely asinine comparison led me to do a little research, from which I drew the conclusion that, yes, Buster Olney is a complete idiot. In the history of baseball, there have been 105 World Series. The Yankees have played in 40 of them, and won 27. The Phillies have played in 7 and won 2. Therefore, the Yankees and Phillies have combined for 28% of all the championships in Major League Baseball (with the Yankees obviously pulling all of the weight). They have only met in the World Series TWICE! Last year, and in 1950. Generally, in rivalries, you have to play each other every once in awhile.

On the other hand, there have been 63 NBA Finals. The Celtics have played in 20 Finals, and won 17 championships. The Lakers have played in 30 Finals, and won 15. Add those numbers up, and the Celtics and Lakers have combined for over 50% of all the championships in NBA history. They have met each other in the Finals 11 times. And during the 1980s, the Celtics and/or Lakers played in every single NBA Finals. Not to mention, the Celtics and Lakers had the great personal rivalry of Bird and Magic. There is nothing even remotely close to compare that to with the Yankees and Phillies. Olney might say Ryan Howard and Alex Rodriguez, but they never go head to head on the field like Bird and Magic did on the court.

There is not one thing about Yankees-Phillies that makes it a rivalry. They’ve only met in the World Series twice, and the championship totals are completely one-sided for the Yankees. Just because the Raiders and Buccaneers met in the Super Bowl one year doesn’t mean they have a rivalry. Rivalries develop and grow over time. You can’t just meet one time in a 60 year period and call it Celtics-Lakers. It just doesn’t work that way. This is just another example of a sports media member overeating to something they think they see.

Wake up, Buster. There’s got to be something else you can talk about rather than making a comparison that is just not there. Stick to baseball. Leave the other sports out of it. It’s not in your job description, nor in your skill set.

Godzilla owns New York, Yankees Clinch 27th World Series Title

Although it seemed like a forgone conclusion that the Yankees would win the World Series up three games to one, they needed a little help from "Godzilla" to help them pull out the win in game six by the score of 7-3.

Yankees designated hitter, Hideki Matsui was 3-4 with 6 RBI's including the first scoring play of game six with a two-run home run. Matsui who was much maligned during the season came up with two big offensive plays to lead the Yankees. Matsui was awarded the MVP for his performance in game six. He becomes the first designated hitter to win the award.

Yankees starting pitcher Andy Pettite was dominate in his performance where he only allowed four hits and three runs in 5 2/3 innings pitched.

Alex Rodriguez plays the "John Wayne" role as he rides off into the sunset with his World Series ring and Kate Hudson. Congrats to him.

The Philadelphia Philles were arguably one of the best teams to defend their championship but a lack of pitching inevitable did them in. Kudos to Chase Utley who had one of the biggest performance that I have ever witnessed during a World Series but at least the Phillies have a chance to look back at last year's title.

In closing, The Yankees won their 27th World Series and all they need was a little help from Godzilla.

Obviously with the Yankees up 3-1, this might be the clincher for their 27th World series title.

Who to root for in the World Series? How about, No One!

Since this is a general sports blog, I have to take note that tonight is game one of Major League Baseball's World Series between the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Rick Morris of FDH has a nice comprehensive preview to peruse at your own leisure but let's be honest, how many of you feel like that you are having difficulty deciding on who to root for in this World Series?

You're not alone. Many fans are having difficulty trying to root for either of these teams. The Phillies won last year's World Series and the Yankees hold a record 26 World Championships. To use an analogy, it's like your girlfriend cheating on you with your best friend. Who are you more mad at, your girlfriend or your best friend?

I feel bad for Mets fans who have a love of the game of baseball and forced to watch their cross-town rivals celebrate or their NL East foes celebrate. You might as well take a cheese grinder to their skull.

To be honest, the biggest question is who has a more obnoxious fan-base? I'm not throwing every Yankees and Phillies fan under the bus but it's tough to get past the fact that the Philadelphia and New York have the history of having " over-the-top fanatical" fans.

One thing that also hurts the World Series is the timing with the other sports. Day Two of the NBA season is about to tip-off, College/NFL football is still currently on the brain, and it's nearing Halloween. The World Series will still pull ratings but does MLB think it could pull the causal fans interest at this point? I think many who are not baseball fans or who are baseball fans that live on the west coast would rather watch a regular season NBA game or AMC's showing of "The House on Haunted Hill" than game one of the World Series.

However, this is the Fall Classic for a reason. The biggest moments happen in the World Series and will probably provide some indelliable images to remember from this one.

In the end, enjoy the fall classic for what is and not for who you root for.

Is the Red Sox World Series title in 2004 tainted?

The recent news of Manny Ramirez testing positive for steroids has put a sour face on the game of Major League baseball and now we have the news that his teammate David Ortiz tested positive back in 2003 along with him.

Big Papi back in an older television interview stated that any steroid users should be "banned for one year." Well, isn't that the pot calling the kettle black. However, I'm going to turn a blind eye since many players were juicing in 2003 but the real question that it does bring up is the 2004 World Series Title tainted due to this new knowledge?

It is really tough to not have an opinion at this point and it feels that the 2004 title has a cloud over it now much similar to the cloud Barry Bonds had when he broke Aaron's record.

Did either of them juice in 2004 though? Well, that is something I guess we will never know since we cannot assume that either decided to stop using performance-enhancing substances during the 2004 season. We could assume the best-case scenario that they did but it is tough to trust any Major League Baseball player from that era now.

Major League Baseball from 1998-2007 has become a black eye in the game of baseball and really should be noted as "the steroid era" for the historical records. It will be interesting to see how Boston reacts to one of their favored sons tested positive. He was the guy who helped beat the hated Yankees in the ALCS for Christ sake.

Does the World Series in 2004 become tainted though? I guess on some level it does, sure there were many athletes on that team that were clean but when you have two bad apples, it spoils the rest of them.

The sad part is that the 2004 Red Sox win in the World Series changed the lives of the people in Boston who never saw a World Series title and now the cloud of the "steroid era" is now permanently affixed to "reversing the curse."
