Boston Red Sox Fans Serenade Kevin Youkilis With Biz Markie's, "Just A Friend"

It's not often that a Major League Baseball game finishes past the bewitching hour but that's what happened yesterday during the Boston Red Sox/Anaheim Angels affair.

The game ended up lasting over 7 hours due to two separate rain delays and fans who made the trek left the ballpark.

However, a few faithful Red Sox Nation stayed around and decided to do a little singing to Red Sox 3rd baseman Kevin Youkilis:

Boston Red Sox Fan Gets Tackled By Security Rather Quickly

For some strange reason, sports fans find reasons to run out on the playing field whether they are allowed to or not.

Sadly for one Boston Red Sox fan, he learned the hard way that Boston security will take you down if your trek onto the Fenway Park outfield:

Alec Baldwin/John Krasinski Battle Over Red Sox/Yankees In New Era Commercial

The Major League Baseball season is officially about two weeks old but I would be remiss if I didn't post the below New Era commercial featuring actors Alec Baldwin and John Krasinski.

What's it about? C'Mon YANKS AND SOXS!!!!!!:

Ladies and Gentlemen, Mayor Thomas Menino

BOSTON -- Mayor Tom Menino was at it again today in the middle of honoring Bruins legend Bobby Orr with the statue unveiling of "The Goal" outside TD Garden near the West Entrance.

The mayor said the statue captured an "ionic" moment, and also asserted that Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek was the field-goal kicker who pushed the New England Patriots to their first Super Bowl victory:

"Boston has an amazing set of remarkable athletes whose actions in the moment have become (sic) ionic in sports. Havlicek stole the ball. Fisk waved the ball fair. Flutie launched the Hail Mary pass. Varitek split the uprights. Today we honor one of the most brilliant moments: Bobby Orr flying through the air. Who could forget that play against St. Louis as the Bruins beat the Blues to bring a Stanley Cup to Boston?"

*Audio clip to be added shortly.

Time and time again Boston Mayor, Thomas Menino makes himself look a total clown and time and time again the people living in Massachusetts continue to elect this guy as mayor of a city he knows absolutely nothing about. I flat out don't can't believe this shit. Varitek splits the uprights? Ionic in sports? WTF is he talking about. He is butchering, potentially the most important moments in the history of Boston sports, hell Boston for that matter.

Menino is an absolute babbling bastard who needs to go take some basic English and reading classes, learn how not to mumble then go watch a fucking Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, and Celtics game before the whole city of Boston loses it.

You know Thomas Menino is kind of like that girlfriend who doesn't know shit about sports and every time she tries to talk about spor-- I mean speak, she makes your ears bleed and your stomach feel like you're going to puke.

What a pathetic piece of shit.

3 Things that Baffled Me (5/4)

3 Things that blew my mind from the past week:

Red Sox– Pitching and defense. These were supposed to be the keys to the Red Sox season. Well, one month into the season, the Sox are ranked 12th (of 14) in the American League in pitching, and 13th in defense. So much for that plan. Not to mention two-thirds of the starting outfield is hurt, and David Ortiz is hitting .159 with a strike out every 2.7 at-bats. Oh yea, the starting catcher Victor Martinez is hitting .233 with 1 HR and 7 RBI, while his back up (Jason Varitek) is hitting .324 with 5 HR and 9 RBI in half as many games. To top it all off, the Sox just got swept by the worst team in the league (Baltimore), and are now already 7 games out of first place. Time to shake things up. I’m not sure what, but something’s gotta change. Hopefully the Bruins and Celtics keep winning, because if the only thing I have to watch are these pitiful Red Sox, I’m gonna lose it.

Boston Water Crisis – "Now if a Muslim woman strapped with a bomb on a bus with the seconds running give you the jitters, Just imagine an American-based Christian organization planning to poison water supplies to bring the second-coming quicker. "
- Lupe

Naaaaah. Not this time. Just a water main break. I’ll tell you what gives me the jitters though: a car bomb in Times Square. Yikes.

This KFC commercial –

Breast cancer is a very serious disease, and I applaud KFC for doing its part in raising money for a cure. But 50 cents for every huge ass bucket of that greasy chicken? Sure they might raise enough to make a significant contribution to breast cancer research, but at what cost? They’ll be contributing to the increasing obesity of America, not to mention more than a few heart attacks and clogged arteries. Seems kinda like trying to put out a fire with gasoline. KFC’s message: Fuck cancer, have a heart attack instead.

Daily Dude: Darnell McDonald

The name's Darnell McDonald and he just lifted the Red Sox out of whatever funk they were caught in.  Probably got you're head up your ass trying to figure this one out right?  Don't worry, you're not alone.  Making his Red Sox debut after being called up prior to Thursday Nights game vs. the Rangers, it had been six years since McDonald had set foot in Fenway Park.  McDonald went 2-2 with a game tying HR in the 8th and a walk off base hit in the 9th.  To quote Sammy Adams,
"I'm comin' up, I'm comin' up all in"

David Ortiz supplies you with the Stat of the Week

As you all know David Ortiz will not be in the line up today against the Minnesota Twins. This statistically, specifically must of caught Terry Francona's eye:

44% of the time David Ortiz swings at a pitch he misses. The league average is 20%.

FU Joe West

"They're the two clubs that don't try to pick up the pace," said West, the chief of the umpiring crew working the three-game series, according to the report. "They're two of the best teams in baseball. Why are they playing the slowest? During Tuesday night's game, home plate umpire Angel Hernandez denied a number of requested timeouts in the batter's box. West did not allow Hernandez to comment, according to the report. "All of baseball looks to these two clubs to pick up the pace," West said, according to the report. "[Hernandez] did everything he could. The players aren't working with us."

Seriously, after the fucking debacle that was last years playoffs where more than a few games were decided on totally blown calls, no umpire in the entire MLB should be opening his mouth about anything. Joe West has absolutely positively no right whatsoever to bitch about the two best teams in the god damn sport having classic duels. I hope Joe West gets heckled to death every time he steps into Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park. What a douche bag. That guy has some fucking balls to bitch about players taking pitches and trying to paint the corners when his god damn crew blew at least two or three different plays in this series, and will blow at least 100 more calls throughout the season. Not to mention, fucking Joe West's strike zone was the size of his god damn dick through out the series, which he hasn't seen in at least twenty years. So Joe West do me a favor, shut the fuck up you fat fuck.

Four Videos to Recap The Red Sox-Yankees Opening Day Game

Usually most sports blogs provide some stirring recap of a sporting event down to each minuscule detail about the outcome of the game and players/coaches decisions during it.

However, we here at Outside the Boxscore prefer to just let the videos do the talking.

He are some of the best or worst from the Boston Red Sox's 9-7 opening day win over the New York Yankees.

Red Sox, Beckett agree on 4-year, $68 million extension

The Red Sox and right-hander Josh Beckett have agreed to a four-year, $68 million contract extension, one major-league source confirmed to FOXSports.com. The team has called a news conference for 3 p.m. ET Monday.

Beckett is 65-34 with a 4.08 ERA in 123 starts with the Red Sox since 2006. A two-time All-Star in Boston, he was set to become a free agent at the end of this season.

Great deal for the Red Sox, locking up Josh Beckett for 4 years. The Sox didn’t want to give Beckett a 5th year, and like always, it was their way or the highway. Beckett easily could have waited until free agency after the season and got more years and more money. However, he chose to stay in Boston, where he has grown comfortable and has a chance to win a World Series every year.

However, I must say it is interesting timing on the signing. This contract offer has been on the table for awhile now, and Beckett chooses to sign it the day after he lays an egg on opening night against the Yankees (4.2 IP, 5 ER, 1 K, 3 BB). I know there are some haters out there who will say that the timing shows that Beckett may lack some confidence going forward, but I’m sure it’s all just a coincidence. Right?

Daily Dip: Heidi Watney

In lieu of the 2010 Red Sox season kicking off last night in the Bean, I would like to introduce NESN's finest dip, Heidi Watney.  Beating out a pluthera of New England hotty reporters(Kathryn Tappen, former Hazel Mae, former Two Tit Tina Cervasio), along with the Network TV babes such as Erin Andrew's, Heidi wears the crown as one of the finest sports reporters in the country.  Although she has had her fair share of flings with Red Sox players (Varitek, Nick Green, etc.), I would play catch with her any day of the week.

Red Sox Edition Beats By Dre. Are Tit(o)(o)

Boston Herald, By Greg Turner

Dr. Dre wants Red Sox [team stats] Nation to listen up.
The hip-hop hero will unveil a new version of his Beats by Dr. Dre headphones during tomorrow’s Opening Day festivities at Fenway Park [map]. The high-end, noise-cancelling headsets sport the Sox logo and blue-and-red design.
Dre is known for his 1992 album “The Chronic” and for producing hits with rappers such as Eminem and 50 Cent. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records, launched the $350 Beats headphones with Monster Cable Products in 2008.
The latest version will be the venture’s first sports-branded product available to the public. Monster has made custom Beats headphones for Cleveland Cavaliers star Lebron James and the Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant.
Monster and Dre’s last big product launch was in January when they unveiled an in-ear version designed by music and fashion star Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Simply genius.  I'm not sure which I'm more excited about.  The new song "Under Pressure" Jimmy Iovine mentions by Dre. and Jay-Z, or the Soxphones?  Both are giving me a chub.

The phones are rumored to be retailing at $399, and will be available soon through Apple, Beatsbydre.com, and BestBuy.

I'll add them to my Xmas list right under the iPad.

Boston Red Sox Top 20 Moments Of All Time

With baseball right around the corner and just 1 day away, here is a look at the Red Sox top 20 moments from the great Ted Williams and legendary Carlton Fisk to the current Red Sox players Jonathan Papelbon and Kevin Youkillis.

Be sure to watch the whole thing, Sam performs a new joint titled Haters, which is yet to be released and it's pure fire.

How the Victor Martinez Trade really happened…

I think it is a pretty fair bet that most of us never get to see the inner-working of an MLB trade being completed.

Well, we finally get the chance to see how Boston Red Sox general manager “Theo Epstein” really works to acquire talent from other teams.

From the people over at SportsMockLive on Sportstime Ohio, show us what really happens during the trade between the Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians for Victor Martinez.

Enough of the Yankees/Red Sox Rivalry

The one positive about this weekend was the return of the NFL and the return of Regis Philbin to “Millionaire” for a brief anniversary run. However, that could not save us from the eternal damnation of Yankees/Red Sox.

Although, the Bronx Bombers swept the Sox, outside of the Boston/New York, the world seemed to move on with their everyday lives of the week. However, the non-stop coverage of ESPN and Fox Sports nearly made me want to jam a pencil into the eye of Joe Morgan.

I think these networks tend to forget that there are other locations outside of the Boston/New York media markets in baseball. (There are I swear to you!) ESPN pelts you with coverage that this series matters in the AL East and you have to hear Joe Buck drone on about how great these two franchises are.

I think both of these networks have forget that in the recent nine year history of the rivalry between both of these franchises, each side has dominated the other. There does not seem to be the same luster that there once was. Maybe the Sox eliminating the “lovable loser” tag probably did not help their cause. They have become the Yankees of Boston for any other fan in the country.

The undertone of a series that matters in early August; still does not seem to ring a bell to me. Sure the Yankees took a 6 ½ game lead over the Sox but still there are more than 40 games left to play. It is not completely out of the question that the Red Sox could come back to win the AL East. Yet, ESPN/Fox Sports treat these series like the be-all end-all, that’s it.

The luster has all but rubbed off on the Yankee/Red Sox rivalry but it seems that ESPN and Fox have yet to receive that telegram.

Is the Red Sox World Series title in 2004 tainted?

The recent news of Manny Ramirez testing positive for steroids has put a sour face on the game of Major League baseball and now we have the news that his teammate David Ortiz tested positive back in 2003 along with him.

Big Papi back in an older television interview stated that any steroid users should be "banned for one year." Well, isn't that the pot calling the kettle black. However, I'm going to turn a blind eye since many players were juicing in 2003 but the real question that it does bring up is the 2004 World Series Title tainted due to this new knowledge?

It is really tough to not have an opinion at this point and it feels that the 2004 title has a cloud over it now much similar to the cloud Barry Bonds had when he broke Aaron's record.

Did either of them juice in 2004 though? Well, that is something I guess we will never know since we cannot assume that either decided to stop using performance-enhancing substances during the 2004 season. We could assume the best-case scenario that they did but it is tough to trust any Major League Baseball player from that era now.

Major League Baseball from 1998-2007 has become a black eye in the game of baseball and really should be noted as "the steroid era" for the historical records. It will be interesting to see how Boston reacts to one of their favored sons tested positive. He was the guy who helped beat the hated Yankees in the ALCS for Christ sake.

Does the World Series in 2004 become tainted though? I guess on some level it does, sure there were many athletes on that team that were clean but when you have two bad apples, it spoils the rest of them.

The sad part is that the 2004 Red Sox win in the World Series changed the lives of the people in Boston who never saw a World Series title and now the cloud of the "steroid era" is now permanently affixed to "reversing the curse."

Defending My Red Sox: Why 5/6 of them Belong in the All Star Game

Everyone is dissing on my beloved Red Sox, accusing their fans of poor taste for the 5 Sox players voted to this year's All Star Game (I'm looking at you Rick). It really isn't that bad, however, as I think most of the dudes deserve to be in this year. Here's who, and why:

The Guys Who Deserve to Be There:
Jason Bay- Bay has 55 Runs, 20 HR, and an AL leading 72 RBI with the break coming up. He and Torii Hunter have easily been the best AL outfielders so far this year, and he deserves his spot.

Josh Beckett- Josh Beckett isn't the best pitcher in the AL, but he's up there, and he definitely belongs on this team. The only starting pitcher that might be deserving of a nod over Beckett that didn't get one is Jered Weaver, and his stats are very similar, so that's a wash.

Tim Wakefield- Many look at this selection as an example of wins (11) overvalued in lieu of performance (4.31 era). I see a baseball lifer who has never made the all star game despite some great seasons, all thanks to his one signature pitch. In the name of Robert Alan Dickey, Wake deserves an All Star Game at least once in his career. Let this be his one.

The Guys Who Maybe Belong:
Jonathan Papelbon- While Paps is certainly having an off year, he's still tied for second in saves and has a respectable ERA. Like it or not, the American League All Star Bullpen will probably feature Paps, Rivera, and Nathan every single year until one of the guys is hurt or retires. So sorry Joakim Soria (who was injured too long), J.P Howell (who doesn't get enough saves) and David Aardsma (who is a former Red Sox with sparkling peripheral stats this year), but that's the way it is.

And for those who would accuse me of homerism here, Rivera is A) an amazing closer and B) his ERA is up this year (2.43), so he too isn't having the best of years. But he belongs in the game too.

Kevin Youkilis- 8 AL 1B have at least 45 R, 14 HR, and 45 RBI at the halfway mark. I don't see anyone other than Morneau and Texiera standing out above the rest, and so Youk isn't the worst pick of all for third string first basemen. There's some argument for Carlos Pena (but he's hitting .231) and Paul Konerko (who is having a revilatization year but isn't quite as good as most of the big boppers. Debateable here...but Youk isn't a bad pick.

The Guy Who Doesn't Belong:
Dustin Pedroia- I still don't see this pick as a big deal, as the guy was last year's MVP (whether you agreed with it or not), and it's hard to beat that name recognition. While Aaron Hill did make the game, there's no question he should have been its starter, and not a bench player. And after that, I count Ian Kinsler, Chone Figgins, Robinson Cano, Brian Roberts, and Ben Zobrist (who made the game) as all better 2B options than Pedroia this year. Unlike Youk, who sort of fits amongst that upper echelon, Pedroia has been a bit behind the pace in this year's first half, and I would have kept him off the ballot, but hey, that's me.

Also, Pedroia's pregnant wife is in the hospital anyways, so he may not play. So then Kinsler would make it, one less Red Sox would be in the game, and maybe you'd all be a bit happier. Maybe?

So there you have it. Say what you will, but I think (most of) these guys deserve their spot in the All Star Game. Especially Wake.

Ummmmmm, That's Only Two Outs

During last night's game between the Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Red Sox where the Orioles came back from a nine-run defecit to win, the 7th inning showed us one of the most bizzare things that I have ever seen at a baseball game.

The Red Sox were cruising in the 7th inning with one out and Felix Pie at the plate for the Orioles and he weakly ground out for the second out of the inning. Well, the entire Red Sox infield runs off the field thinking that it is the third out of the inning.

The umpire eventually calls them all back saying that there was only two outs in the inning. I have seen players forget how many outs there were but not an entire group of players.

I guess in Boston, 2 outs = 3 outs.
