A Parent's Job Is Never Done

People who aren't parents--and I mean parents of either the two-footed OR four-footed, furry variety--don't always understand how or why we tolerate the things we do.  Parents of human children deal with all kinds of things:  The kid cleaning mud off of himself with the 'only for special occasions' towels, five minutes before the guests arrive.  The daughter who pukes all over the couch that was purchased only last week.  The kid who wets the bed, years after being completely potty trained.  But parents of furry kids face the same things:  The dog who runs across the carpet after romping in the mud, just days after the cleaners left.  The cat who hacks up a hairball on the newly upholstered dining room chair.  The old, rarely incontinent pet that has an accident during the night while sleeping with you.  And we tolerate these things because we love our kids.

As I have mentioned, my cat is about to be 18-years-old.  In those 18 years, she has been quite healthy and we haven't had a lot of problems with her.  She has never had a chewing problem and because we had her declawed, shredding furniture hasn't been a problem, either.  Other than two bouts of a kidney infection, she hasn't needed anything more than her yearly visits to the vet.  While she has never been what you can call a 'people cat,' she never has been mean to guests, either.  The biggest problems I have ever had with her are the fur that covers almost every surface of the house--I now know it was a mistake to want a long-haired cat--the litter she brings to every room of the house--it clings to her long fur and the fur she grows between her toes--and the hairballs she regularly hacks up--again, this is because of her long fur.  That is quite a short list of problems.  Unfortunately, the list of problems might be growing with her getting older--and yesterday I had to face the possibility.

Over the last five years, my cat has had an incontinence problem twice.  One night, she was sleeping on the floor next to me in the computer room.  All of a sudden, I could smell cat pee.  I called to her and it took several times before she finally woke up--I almost thought she was in a coma, she was so deep under.  As it turned out, her badder released while she was in her deep sleep.  That was her first bout of incontinence--and it was substantial.  About two years later, she was sleeping in the kitchen in the 'catloaf' position, and when she moved, there was a wet spot on the carpet.  Once again, she had had an accident. And yesterday, her weakening bladder struck again.

The cat usually sleeps with me for, at least, part of the night.  Yesterday morning, the distinct smell of cat pee woke me up.  At first, I thought I was dreaming--well, having a nightmare, actually.  (And if you have ever smelled cat pee, you know why it would have been a nightmare.)  As my fuzzy brain began to wake fully, I realized that yes indeed, I WAS smelling cat pee--in my bed.  The bedspread, blanket, sheets, mattress pad, all the way to the NEW mattress, smelled of cat pee.  The strangest thing:  There was NO wetness present.  I don't know what to say about that--there should have been a great amount of wetness with the amount of area the smell covered.  But there wasn't.  Anyway, the clean-up had to begin.

My washing machine has a setting called 'sanitize.'  I'm not too sure WHAT it does--other than wash the clothes in hot, hot water--but it takes an hour and a half to complete.  And it is well worth the time.  Not one iota of smell/stink--other than the scent of fabric softener--was left in the bedding that I washed at that setting.  It was amazing.  So, I had the cleaning of the sheets, etc, taken care of, so it was on to getting the smell out of the mattress.  I was devastated, as the mattress is only a few months old--and we paid (probably) WAY too much for it.  I had nothing in the house that would neutralize the smell, so we had to go and find something.  Our first--and as it turned out, ONLY--stop was the local pet store.  When we asked what should be used to get rid of the smell, there was only one recommendation:  X-O Odor Neutralizer.  At $12 a bottle, I bought it, with the vow that I would return it if it didn't work.  I still have the bottle.  The stuff is absolutely AMAZING!!!!  If you EVER have need for getting rid of a bad smell, go and buy this stuff.  I'm sold and will ALWAYS have it in my house.

My first thought when I needed to get a product to rid the mattress of the smell, was that I needed to talk to The Youngest.  Considering she works at a vet's AND has seven animals of her own, I couldn't think of anyone else that could give advice like her.  Unfortunately, she was at work and unreachable when I needed her.  (Why I didn't just call her at work, I'll never know.)   When I finally did talk to her, she did recommend another product--the second one that the pet store recommended.  However, she did say that what I bought was good--they use it in the office to spray on dog's butts after they express their anal glands. (I don't know this from personal experience, but I understand the smell is quite powerful.)  The product is eco-friendly and non-toxic for humans and animals.  So, use this post as a public service announcement:  X-O Odor Neutralizer is some GOOD stuff.  And I REALLY hope I don't need to use it too often.

Sleeping Beauty

There are some women who, when they sleep, could be auditioning for the part of Sleeping Beauty--they look completely serene and beautiful.  I am NOT one of those women.

I sleep on my stomach--always have, even when I was pregnant.  This means that my face is mashed into a pillow all night long.  And I don't mean in a good way--the pillow scrunches my face into ways that defy all logic.  One side of my face is squashed downward, while the other side goes up.  I don't know how, but this is the way it is.  I also have been told that I snore--all night--loudly.  Again, I don't know how one snores without sleeping on one's back, but I guess I have the talent.  And for TMI, I drool.  Which is even worse whenever I wear my retainers.  Sexy!  Really, I don't know how K manages to not run out of the house whenever he looks at me sleeping--but then again, maybe he DOESN'T look at me.  While I don't remember my dreams, I do know that I wake myself up at times, whimpering in my sleep because of what I'm dreaming.  All in all, I'm not going to win any Sleeping Beauty contest.

All of this is the reason I have to be up and out of bed at least 2 hours before I leave the house.  It takes that long for my face to fall back into place and for all of the puffiness to disappear.  When I sleep I get major 'bedhead' and my hair has to be completely wet-down to rid it of the look.  The lines that I get on my face while sleeping rival an 85-year-old woman's wrinkles--thankfully they disappear within two hours.  I wish I was one of those women who could roll out of bed and leave the house in less than a half hour, but it ain't gonna happen.  I want to blame age on this, but I haven't been a 'beautiful sleeper' since I turned one, so that isn't the problem.  Sleeping Beauty was lucky.  {sigh}

Penis Envy

(Now that title should get this blog some hits!  :D)

This isn't about penis envy in the way that Freud meant it.  This post is all about how convenient 'penii'* are when it comes to peeing.  How many women really never envied men for being able to pee standing up?  I think the entire process is so much more simple and easy for men than it is for women, so in that aspect, I have penis envy.  And, it seems as if a lot of women are like me.

GoGirl is a product that has been designed to allow women to pee while standing up.  Wow.   It is supposed to be for women who camp--not me--women who travel to third world countries--not me--women who spend a great deal of time outdoors--not me.  I would think of using this product when in some of the public bathrooms I have used, but I am very choosy about where I go, so it isn't that much of an issue for me.  I just can imagine how other restroom patrons would react to a pair of feet standing TOWARDS the toilet in the stall and not away from it, as is the usual practice.  (Let's face it, we do spend WAY too much time glancing under the stall doors when we go into a restroom.)  I wonder if security would be called because someone thought a transvestite was in the women's?  I could see using this in an airplane bathroom--or what I think an airplane bathroom is like.  All of the times I have flown--not THAT much, actually--I have never used a bathroom on a plane.  I just can't make myself do it.

The number one (no pun intended) time I would want to use this device is when I have to give a sample in the doctor's office.  After all of these years--and two pregnancies--I have not mastered the technique of how to pee in a bottle without showering my hand, wrist, and lower arm with pee.  I just can't do it.  The biggest problem, though, is the sample has to be sterile and I don't think the GoGirl can be sterilized.  Bummer.

While this isn't a TERRIBLE idea, I don't know how much usage I would get out of it.  I AM a klutsy person, so I would probably wind up having to change my clothes after using this thing way too often.  For the time being, I think I will pass.  What about you?

*I know that isn't the proper plural of 'penis,' I just like the word better than 'penises.'  :D

Using Computers and The Interwebs

If you are reading this, then you probably know how to use the interwebs.  And if you are reading this, you probably know how to use computers.  And if both of the previous sentences are true, you more likely than not have been asked by someone to find the answer to a question by using the interwebs.  A question they can find the answer to themselves, simply by using Google.  And that is why so many computer users--geeks, as well as 'normal' people--get livid when asked to 'find' answers.

I LOVE my computer.  While I'm not a total geek, I tend towards that description.  I'm not quite as computer-savvy as I used to be--a few years ago I KNEW I could build my own computer, but I'm not so sure these days.  That being said, I do have a knowledge that a lot of my friends and family don't.  I don't mind being asked to look up information for people--especially those who don't have computers or lack the experience I have.  I've often thought that I could make money by doing searches for others, but setting something like that up would actually take time and effort, neither of which I'm willing to do.  So, I will be content to search for houses to rent in the southwest for my sister-in-law and look to see if the knife The Husband wants is still being manufactured.  I have the time to do these things and it doesn't really take away from what I may WANT to do.  However...

I do have a problem when someone asks me to find out 'why is the sky blue?' or any simple, easily Googled question such as that.  I also have a problem when someone asks me to do a search for them, but THEY are on the computer themselves for 20 hours of every day.  EXCUSE ME!?!?!?  And just why can't you do it yourself?  And, obviously, many people feel the same as I do, because there is a site that has been developed called 'Let Me Google That For You'--http://lmgtfy.com/.  This is for those people who find it more convenient to bother you with their question than Google it for themselves.  It is an easy to use, step-by-step course in how to use Google to get the answers you are seeking.  So, if you don't want to pass on this link whenever someone asks you a simple question, make sure you say--in your MOST sarcastic voice--"Just wait a second and let me Google that for you."  It might help, but I doubt it.

Formulating A Post

While I get my remaining brain cells working properly enough to get my next post organized, I had to put this up.  While doing some reading the other day--probably on mental_floss (where else do I get these obscure links?)--an article was posted entitled 50 Secrets Your Pilot Won't Tell You.  Absolutely fascinating!  I have to remember, the next time I fly, to tell the pilot "Nice landing!"  13 Things Your Flight Attendant Won't Tell You and 10 More Things Your Flight Attendant Won't Tell You are also very interesting reads.

Yup, Yesterday's Post Did Its Job ;)

As in the past, as soon as I write one of my 'I might be done blogging' posts, I find that I have a post inside me just waiting to get out.  This time is no different.  So, here goes.

--Has anyone else noticed a definite 'something's not right' thing going on with the interwebs today?  Things are very slow and I'm having trouble getting to some sites.  And I'm not sure what is going on...

--The first indication that something wasn't right on the Gore today was when I went to try to buy our tickets to see 'Wicked.'  It took forever to load the performing arts center website and then I couldn't get from there to Ticketmaster and things went downhill from there.  I came close to drop-kicking this computer out the front window, but I decided to try and have a Zen moment, sit back, try to relax, and ride out the problem.  Surprisingly, whatever the problem was got resolved fairly quickly and I was able to purchase our tickets--for the day I wanted AND seats that are excellent!  So, on 8 February 2011, we will be sitting and watching 'Wicked'--YAY!  I don't know if this would have been MY choice to see, but K--and our friends--wanted to see it, so I'll happily go along.  What I actually can't wait to see, however, is 'Jersey Boys'--and that will be in June.  I will get THOSE tickets next month when they go on sale.  I wonder if this means I WON'T get to see a concert next year?  Hmmm...

--We are having a perfect fall day today--temps in the mid-60s, sunshine, very little breeze.  I can handle this weather.  I've been trying to prepare things for the winter with setting out the bird feeders, etc.  It still is too early for me to put out the shepherd's hooks because of the chipmunks, but I've been able to attract birds with the window feeder.  I'm trying to get the bluejays and grey squirrels to eat off of the corncobs that I have out, but they don't seem to be going for it yet.  And I put out a 'sock' full of thistle seed, hoping that the goldfinches will find it before the snow flies.  I think they will be okay with it, even though it is so close to our back door--they are quite tame.

--Lately when I've been here at the computer--AND when there isn't a game on--I've been listening to the digital music channels on the TV.  One of the channels I listen to is 'Solid Gold Oldies' and have been enjoying it very much.  While I'm familiar with most of the songs/performers that are on here, I find myself saying "Who the hell is THAT?" often enough.  It's almost as if I just didn't listen to any music at several periods in my life--which I don't understand.  It seemed as if I LIVED for the radio back in the day, so I don't know how I missed some of these performers/songs.

--I saw my orthodontist last week.  He was The Oldest's orthodontist many years before he was mine--and I love the guy.  He is another of my health care professionals that 'gets' me--and I sometimes think that's why he still has me coming in for check-ups every four months five years after I got the braces off.  I think he waits for my visits just to hear what I have to say.  :)  Anyway, he adjusted my bottom retainer and then we discussed how my teeth seem to have completely settled, as my top retainer is actually easy for me to place and remove--a much different situation than when I first got it.  As he was looking at how nicely the retainer fit, he looked at me and said (with a twinkle in his eye)  "DON'T EVER lose this retainer--otherwise, I just may have to hurt you!  We will NEVER get this good of a fit ever again."  I guard this retainer--my second one--VERY well.  Not only does it fit PERFECTLY, but the damn thing cost me almost $400--something I DON'T ever want to pay again.  Yeah, I will do my best to never lose it!

--We are now going into the third week of The Season and I am adjusting to not having a life, once again.  Tonight's game will be the last one until next week Thursday and I'm sure I will suffer withdrawal pains--even this early in The Season.  What can I say?  K and I are still going back and forth as to whether we will be getting Center Ice this year, or not.  We get every one of the Wing games on our cable system, so Center Ice would just be for those nights the Wings aren't playing--just to see what the rest of the League is doing.  Today I told him I would be just as happy to use the money to upgrade my text-messaging service on my cellphone to unlimited messages--but he didn't respond.  Without unlimited messaging, I'm really not utilizing my cellphone as well as I should be, so I have to figure out a way to get it.  I have to come up with a plan...

--Re:  previous post.  The Oldest used to work for Wells Fargo and when I told her about the phone call, her first thought was "repo man."  However, she said that the 'repo man' usually just shows up and tows your vehicle away, rather than make calls ahead of time.  I do believe this will forever be a mystery that isn't solved.  And yes, both of the vehicles are at the neighbors' house, so neither has been repossessed.

--Re:  previous post.  I spoke to the neighbors about the driveways and it seems--whether it is intentional or not--that this entire situation is kind of pay-back for the city losing money from them*.  In order to save money on taxes, the neighbors changed the status of their property from three city lots to a homestead--and the city lost quite a bit of tax money because of it.  It almost seems as if this is payback for their doing this--but, of course, this isn't something that can be proved.  As it turned out, the neighbors didn't get any good answers to their questions regarding this entire driveway mess, but they decided to just let it go--it was much easier and cheaper to move on.  And I certainly don't blame them one bit.  After all, it IS true:  You CAN'T fight city hall.

--*I am a conspiracy theorist--and I might actually believe the conspiracy theories more than I want to admit.  ;)  I definitely believe that there are many, many things going on in the country and the world that we would be amazed at if we knew, but I don't know how much I believe in some of the 'crack-pot' theories that float around from time to time.  One thing I DO know is, people hold grudges and WILL get back at you, one way or another--especially in small towns.  And the best way to do this is through small-town politics.  When you piss off the wrong people who are part of the powers-that-be, your life and property can come under a scrutiny that isn't always comfortable--and things can be made to go against you.  And you can never prove what happened.  It is sad, but I think it is the way it always has been and will always be.  And that is why I wonder how much the 'driveway incident' might be payback--the neighbors have had their share of ongoing feuds with our elected officials--both past and present.

--And finally:  If you have never tasted Werther's coffee flavored candies, RUN don't walk, to the nearest store to get some!  I'm eating the sugar-free ones and can't stop!  I do believe they are addictive.  The mix of the coffee flavor and caramel, yummmmmmm!

I Really Didn't Lie

Ever since the 'Do Not Call' list came into being, I don't get nearly as many of 'those' calls that I used to.  And, with Caller ID, I wouldn't even have to answer the majority of those calls that still come through to the house.  But, there are some problems that I continue to have and I wind up answering my share of those calls.

First, I NEED my reading glasses to see the Caller ID displays--and I don't wear my readers all of the time.  So, I don't always know who is calling.  Also, every one of our Caller ID displays will show a number in a different way;  one display will say "Number Unavailable" and another will say "Unknown Caller."  I just never know if it is a call I want to answer.  Sometimes, I may be bored or just not have much to do, so I will take one of these calls.  If it is a survey, I may answer the questions--after all, it just takes a few minutes.  And, there are times when the display comes up a bit funky when 'privacy' is an issue:  As in, when my mail order pharmacy calls.  All of these factors go a long way toward my answering enough calls that most people wouldn't.  I got one of those calls tonight.

Of course, I didn't have my glasses on, so I answered the phone when it rang.  With the baby just getting home, I don't want to miss a call that The Oldest may make--and with K at work, I never know when he might call.  Anyway, this is the way the call went:

ME:  Hello.
MAN:  Hello.  May I speak with a head of the household, please.
ME:  I'm sorry, but no one is available.
MAN:   How about you, ma'am?
ME:  Oh, I'm only the caretaker here.
MAN:  Thank you.
(phone hangs up)

I believe that was the easiest time I have EVER had getting away from an unwelcome, possible solicitor call.  And I didn't have to lie!  :D

Will Post ASAP

I don't have the excuse of 'nothing to write about,' so I'll go with 'no time to write.'  ;)  Actually, this last week+ has been a bit overwhelming:  we went to the Twin Cities for the Labor Day weekend, we had a new granddaughter be born, we had to run to the hospital to SEE said g-daughter, we did a day-run shopping trip, etc, etc, etc.  So, when I FINALLY sit down and spend the time, I will have several posts to write.  And I'm hoping to get to the first one tonight.  Check back soon.

How To Get Rid Of A Bat

When I finally was able, the first thing I did after seeing the bat in the house, was to Google 'how to get rid of a bat.'  (WHAT did we ever do without the interwebs?)  And I was amazed over the lack of diverse answers to my question.  There don't seem to be many ways to get rid of bats.

I did learn a few things about bats that I never knew, however.  One thing I found out is that bat bites don't necessarily hurt--you might not know you have been bitten.  What a comforting thought.  And you know how, on TV and in the movies, you will see people swat at bats with tennis rackets?  NOT a good idea.  When they are hit like that, their heads tend to kind of explode and brain material will 'spray' around.  This is definitely NOT a good thing, as some diseases (possibly rabies) that bats carry are airborne, so that only spreads what they have.  Also, it is highly recommended that any bat that makes its way into your living area be caught, alive, and brought somewhere to be tested for rabies.  Don't think THAT will happen in my house.

So, just HOW do you get a bat out of your house?  Well, not very easily.  I have been told that bats will go towards the light, so turn the lights off in other rooms and keep one room lit where you have an outside door.  Then you just have to either 'shoo' the bat out or it will fly out on its own.  None of the websites I went to gave this advice.  Here is what, basically, all of the sites told you to do:

  • Open ALL of the windows and outside doors in your house.
  • Wait until the bat 'rides' the air currents and leaves your house.

EXCUSE ME!?!?!?  My number one problem with this idea is "What if another bat came INTO the house while everything is opened up?"  And with the amount of bats that are flying around my yard, it is almost GUARANTEED that we would get more bats in our house.  I will NOT be opening up the house and 'waiting' the next time we get a bat.

This was one time that the Gore didn't do much to help me solve a problem.  But then, there doesn't really seem to BE a good solution, so I can't blame the interwebs.  I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that we will never have another bat in our house.

Strangely Wal Mart

We all know that strange things can be found at Walmart--go here to see some of the strangest--but in China you can find things that we would NEVER see here in the US.  Now, this doesn't mean these things are BAD, per se, just different and strange in our way of thinking.  I don't know of anyplace in the US where you will find crocodiles or dried reptiles sold in a Walmart.  But then again, I COULD be wrong.  Here is an article titled 16 Items They Only Sell At Chinese Walmarts.  After you click the link, come back and discuss.

A Bit Strange

I don't hide my pride over my Finnish heritage at all--and I probably show TOO much pride in being a Finn.  So be it.  While the Finns have done much for me to be proud of, as in any culture, there are some strange things happening as well.  And here we go.

Many places around the world have sports that are different than what we follow here in the US.  And some of them are a bit odd.  Finland happens to have two of the stranger sports.

WIFE CARRYING

The sport of wife carrying started in Finland and this is where the world championships are held in the month of July.  Men race an obstacle course while carrying their spouses/significant others and the first to reach the end is the winner.  The grand prize?  The woman's weight in beer.  Read more about it here.

I had to laugh at this one.  I told The Oldest that, not only couldn't K and I WIN this, he wouldn't even be able to pick me up to attempt carrying me.  The Oldest said HER husband wouldn't even be able to run the obstacle course WITHOUT carrying her!  :)  I guess all four of us need to get into shape.

SAUNA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

One of the best parts about being a Finn is the sauna.  Now, I have regularly been in saunas where the temperature is in the 175*+ range, but I DON'T do extreme sauna-ing and I don't know anyone who does.  But in Finland, they have the sauna world championships--and I would think that ONLY true Finns could come close to winning.  (However, there HAVE been non-Finnish women who have won.)

To begin, the temp in the sauna starts at 230*.  Then the contestants go in and sit. Every 30 seconds, water is sprayed on the hot rocks, which causes steam.  And the contestants try to wait out all others, in order to become the winner.  The championships have been going on for 10 or so years, they are nationally televised, and no one BUT a Finn (in the men's competition) has ever won.  And ambulances are at the ready, for those who literally bake to the point of blistering.  Frankly, I think anyone who tries this is more than a little crazy, but whatever floats your boat, I guess.  For more on this, go here to read an excerpt from Rick Reilly's (a national sportswriter) book, in which he describes his attempt at this contest.  (A VERY good read, by the way.)  I STILL cannot believe anyone who is not used to a Finnish sauna would actually attempt doing anything this stupid!

As I said, I probably never have been in a sauna hotter than 200*.  I prefer a temp of no more than 150*--and even THAT can be too hot if you add steam.  When the temp in the sauna is very, very hot, throwing water on the rocks and creating steam can literally take your breath away.  For anyone familiar with the practice, a wet washcloth placed over the mouth can help breathing.  While you feel rejuvenated and cleansed beyond anything you have ever experienced, it isn't something I did on a regular basis.  I liked the long, slow sweating process of sitting in a lower temp.  It is beyond me how anyone can sit in a sauna that is 230* or hotter.  That is crazy.

You Would Think You Could Trust McDonald's, At Least

Even though it probably won't ever happen, I have had thoughts and dreams of traveling the world.  However, one of the big problems with that is my finickiness when it comes to the food I eat.  Actually, it has more to do with foods I WON'T eat.  I am not an adventurous person when it comes to food.  I like what I like and it takes a lot to get me to try something new.  K has gotten perturbed with me on more than one occasion because I order the same things at the same restaurants when we go out.  But, when I go out to eat, I'm usually hungry, so I want to order something that I KNOW I will eat and like.  Period.  So shoot me.

McDonald's has a presence all over the world.  Actually, there are McDonald's in about 124 countries around the world--and there are more than 31,000 individual restaurants.  I always figured that if I traveled, I would have at least ONE restaurant with food that I would eat.  Not so fast.  While I'm sure the same things are served in all McDonald's, there definitely are some strange things served in other parts of the world.  Ah, beer anyone?  Germany serves that.  How about rice and beans?  Costa Rica is where you will find that.  To find out more strange McDonald's menu items, go here to read the rest of the story.

So, I can't travel and stay in my own little protected shell as I thought I could.  I just might have to stay closer to home.  But then, I LIKE it here in my own little world.  :D

(Come back soon for a different look at Wal-Mart!)

And You Thought YOUR Job Was Bad

From mental_floss magazine:

Grooms of the Stool were unfortunate groomsmen paid to thoroughly wipe the King of England's rear and then inspect the stool for signs of illness. While the job seems like a good argument for overthrowing the monarch, it was actually an enviable position in the day.

Don't really want to over-think this one. YIKES!

New Award

My dear, sweet Meleah gave this award to me. I'm supposed to write 10 things I haven't written in this blog ever before. Wow. I tend to be quite open, but I will give this a whirl.

1. I love my daughters dearly and unconditionally. However. If I knew THEN what I know now, I'm not sure I would have ever had children. Because of problems we had with the girls, I no longer have a relationship with my family. K and I came very close to divorcing because of problems with the girls. I had severe bouts of depression because of the girls. You get my drift.

2. At different times in my life, I had a very colorful fantasy life. It was like 'fan fiction,' only it played in my head and not on paper.

3. I practice conversations in my head before I actually have them in real life. Unfortunately, real life NEVER plays out the way I think it will.

4. Anorexics see themselves as fat when they look in a mirror. I, on the other hand, don't necessarily see myself as heavy as I actually am. Now don't get me wrong, I KNOW I am way too fat, but I see myself as I was about 15 years ago and don't 'see' the weight I have gained since. Yes, I was overweight even then, but I just don't see the added baggage. I can actually be surprised when I truthfully look at myself and see what I REALLY look like.

5. I am just over 5 feet tall. I LOVE being short and wouldn't have been upset if I was an inch or more shorter. People seem to be very protective of short women, and I don't mind that one bit.

6. After K and I started dating, while he was out 'cruising' with the Navy, I went out one night with my ex. We talked, made out a little, and he even talked about getting married. Afterwards, I realized what a horrible mistake I had made. Then I was left with explaining all of this to K. The two of them had been closer than brothers way back in the day, and another person from K's hometown knew all about the 'encounter,' so I had to confess before he heard about it from someone else. That mistake almost cost me a wonderful man.

7. I always wished The Mother would have let me skip first grade like the teachers recommended. I often have wondered what my life would be like today.

8. I am quite terrified that I will look like The Mother as I get older. If my hair wasn't colored and it was short and permed, I'm sure I would look like she did at my age. And that scares me.

9. I have gone to the store, bought candy bars--or other junk-type foods--and eaten them in the car before getting home. I did this because I didn't want to share.

10. I've always wanted to sell some of the stuff I make. However, I hate doing the same thing over and over again. I also would never want someone to order something and give me a deadline to produce the product. I could never be an entrepreneur, because I have a very difficult time charging friends for stuff I make--it just doesn't seem right to me somehow.

And there is my list of ten. I'm supposed to tag 6 people to do this, but I will leave it up to each person reading this as to whether they want to or not. I certainly hope someone else does this--I always find other people's lists fascinating.

Pet Peeve

I'm not great when it comes to grammar--at least not anymore. Unfortunately, I have let Facebook, Twitter, and texting come between what I know to be correct and what I actually do. But I am seeing more and more of one of my biggest grammar pet peeves and I cannot stay quiet any longer.

WHEN will people--especially supposed professional writers--learn when to use 'I' and 'me' properly? Everywhere I'm looking these days, writers insist on using 'I' when 'me' would be the proper word. The last straw was today, while reading a hockey magazine, the writer wrote this: "However, I'm fine with making resolutions to improve organizations and people other than THN and I." Now, I realize that The Hockey News isn't a literary publication--and seeing all of the mistakes in it proves that point--but these ARE writers getting paid for their writing. So, I think I should expect some semblance of them using the proper grammar rules. In the preceding example, it should NOT be "...THN and I." but "THN and me."

There are many places (such as here and here) that will explain which word should be used in a sentence. Not really that difficult.

So, using the rule, here is how to determine the proper word to use in the preceding sentence. Do you say '...other than me.' or '...other than I.' Simple as that.

Another example: Would you say 'Come with Julia and I.' or 'Come with Julia and me.'? Separating the subjects will give you 'Come with Julia.' and 'Come with I.' and 'Come with me.' The proper usage is the word 'me' in that sentence, so the correct sentence is 'Come with Julia and me.'

Many people think that using the word 'I' is always proper English and that using 'me' is always incorrect. But, just because it doesn't sound 'formal' doesn't mean it is necessarily wrong.

The Octopus

Very, very, very fascinating article and videos on octopi at National Geographic. It shows an octopus carrying around a coconut shell to use as a shelter when needed. The octopus seems to be an even smarter creature than chimpanzees when it comes to using tools. Quite interesting and the video is just great.

The full video is at the National Geographic site.

Some Fun

While I was surfing around earlier today, I came across this site: 150 things to do when you're bored. This would be a good resource for anyone with kids, but there are a lot of things that adults would find very good, too. A few I thought were very good ideas:

7. List 20 things you like about someone. Now give the list to that person and make their day.

8. Host a movie marathon — but choose the DVDs with your eyes closed. Don't forget popcorn!

37. Send a thank you note to someone who did something nice for you.

95. Count how many licks it takes you to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop.

110. Compose a letter to future inhabitants of your house so they'll know what you and your family were like when you lived there.

119. Gather some stones and construct an inukshuk.

These are just a few of the fun ideas to try.

Were you aware that we don't peel bananas correctly? Well, here is a video that shows the proper way:

I haven't tried this yet, but plan on it!

Who Da Thunk It?

A couple of weeks ago, A noticed one of her cats wasn't 'quite right.' The next day she took him in to be checked over. He was diagnosed with high blood pressure. He is now on blood pressure medication. This is something I NEVER had heard of before--and neither had A. And she works for a vet!

By the way, a cat's blood pressure is taken on the tail. Hmmm, interesting.

If he is THIS lazy, maybe that's why he has BP problems. :)

This Could Be Trouble

As I mentioned earlier this year, some of my ancestors are Sami. I have been reading about the Sami culture and history off and on since then. One of the aspects of the culture is jewelry making--specifically bracelets. They use reindeer hide, pewter thread, and reindeer antlers. And I found a website where I can get 'inspired' or authentic bracelets made by present-day Sami artisans. Oh, boy. I ordered my first one already--it is the black one:

This style is an 'inspired' one--not traditional.

My next bracelet--and yes, I will be buying more--will be an authentic/conforming-to-ancient-tradition one:

I'm also thinking of one in an ancient pattern, such as this:

I decided to start out conservatively and get the thinnest one I could--I have to be very careful with my overly sensitive skin. I'm hoping I won't be allergic or otherwise not able to wear these. I can see wearing at least three of these as a 'stack' at the same time. Hmmm. I guess I have some serious saving up to do. :)

Hockey season better get here quickly--I have too much time on my hands and I can get into big trouble!
