There are many famous smurfs from Papa Smurf to well.....to be honest I don't know any others. However, now we have a nickname for Dallas Mavericks back-up point guard Juan Jose Barea, "Mexican Smurf."
That term was coined by Los Angeles Times sports columnist Mark Heisler, he called Barea this in his NBA Power rankings. Here is his exact quote,
"13. Dallas (13-9)
Juan Jose Barea, superstar: Mexican smurf gets 15-18-22-21 off bench. (11)"
I'm not sure if I should be offended by this or it should bring back good memories when the cartoon was on television. However Mark Heisler didn't do his research since Barea is actually from Puerto Rico.
