(Don’t forget our NBA Finals Live blog for game three starting at 8:30pm est)
In the grand scheme of things in the NBA, there are players who fight their whole lives to win an NBA championship. Then there are the Matt Walsh’s, Jackie Butler’s, Slava Medvedenko’s, and Wayne Simien’s of the world gain rings for pretty much sitting on the bench and looking pretty for most of their time on the court in garbage minutes.
Should these players deserve to rings when you have some players like Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, and Elgin Baylor who killed themselves during their careers yet have nothing to show for it?
Well, in the end it is a double-edged sword. Sure they have the rings but pretty much have nothing to show for it. Sure they can pick up the ladies at the club with it but in the annals of basketball lore, they a clearly laughing stocks.
So legends of the NBA who did not win a ring, feel a little bit better that at least you tried to win while being a great player instead of a dude riding the pine to get one.
In the case of JJ Redick and Adam Morrison, that ring is the highlight of their career. Even with that championship, it will still not remove the memory of them crying after a game or missing an easy lay-up.
So for whoever wins the ring, good job. Your being favorably compared to Mark Madsen.
